To have the music from Hamilton stuck in my head for weeks on end?

I saw it for the first time on Disney plus, and have now fallen in love with the music. It's one of my favourite musicals now.

I was happily living my life largely unaware of Hamilton until I happened to hear Lin-Manuel Miranda on Desert Island Discs and thought ‘oh he’s interesting, maybe I’ll check out this musical he’s written on Spotify’.

I love it. I love In The Heights. I love all of the cast in the Disney+ version. I am another person with a ridiculous crush on LMM - he’s sooo clever! Blush

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett Wow, someone has their hackles up over literally nothing. 🙄 Obviously having the Hamilton proshot on Disney+ is going to bring about a ton of new fans, but I am also not wrong in saying that Hamilton has been around (and wildly popular) for 5+ years now and those just learning of it are indeed 'late to the party.' (Not that there's anything wrong with that by the way. After all, I was one of those annoying teenagers who discovered and became obsessed with RENT in '05 after the movie came out nearly a full TEN years after the show made its debut on broadway so trust me, I've been there too!!)

IDK, maybe I should've stuck a 😉 or a 'lighthearted' on my initial post.

Comefromaway · 30/07/2020 15:51

Whilst factually correct there are perhaps less abrasive ways to point out the difference between a soundtrack (film) and cast recording (theatre)

For what it’s worth my kids introduced me to Hamilton 4/5 years ago and we all saw the show in London shortly after it opened.

There wasn't anything lighthearted about your post, you were trying to be snarky and superior, and managed to come across as a bit of an arsehole.

notmyyacht · 30/07/2020 16:18

@Chuly You're hardly taking the moral high ground here by calling me an arsehole, but thanks for the (unwanted) opinion I guess?

Or just been nicer in the first place.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 30/07/2020 16:44

Oh my god YES. I couldn't sleep the other night and "The Sccccchhhhhuyler sisters" was looping around my head. I've actually learnt the rap to Satisfied because I love it so much and it was annoying me that I couldn't sing along haha. And joining the queue for Daveed Diggs, he is fiiiiiine.

Why? You weren't making a joke.

WendyHoused · 30/07/2020 19:07

@theluckiest

To be honest, I'm a bit tempted...
Omg! That mask!
WendyHoused · 30/07/2020 19:11

I love Lin to death, he’s a genius and a sweetheart.
That said, Jamal Westman is my favourite Alexander Hamilton. Daveed Diggs is my favourite Lafayette and Jason Pennycooke is my favourite Jefferson.
My pets are named for the Schuyler sisters.

Boulshired · 30/07/2020 20:32

I have seen it twice and whilst nothing beats being there, watching on tv the songs stuck more. There is so much to absorb live and it is so fast paced. I was in London in March to see it, feel so sorry for those working on the show. They gave everything.

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/07/2020 20:37

I’m not new to it, tried desperately for Broadway tickets when it first opened and failed miserably then paid £200 a ticket for a crap stalls seat in London as we only had one specific Saturday night to see it in its first couple of months! Loved it still though! I am loving having so many more people to talk about it to though!

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/07/2020 20:39

What was most annoying was on the seating plan they looked like plum seats but the poor rake, high stage and unfortunate nature of being short behind two tall blokes meant I couldn’t see a fair bit without leaning over and couldn’t see any feet at all! Not happy for £200 - I’m not bitter! Grin

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 30/07/2020 20:44

Saw it on Disney+ for the first time on July 3rd. Been singing the songs ever since. Literally woke up with “Everyone give it up for America’s favorite fighting Frenchman! LAFAYETTE!!!” In my head this morning.

It’s amazing and I’m looking forward to selling a kidney to be able to afford to see it in the west end at some point when theatre resumes.

Boulshired · 30/07/2020 20:51

I took any seats I could get a few years ago and then waited to get front row seat, unfortunately as it was early March this year and it was hard not to notice the amount of moisture in the air with all the covid talk. They project some distance.

Thunderbolted · 30/07/2020 20:51

My 6 year old loves it. He knows most of the lyrics to the first 5 or so songs but thankfully one of my fave parts has gone over his head:

[MULLIGAN]
Brrrah brraaah! I am Hercules Mulligan
Up in it, lovin’ it, yes I heard ya mother said “Come again?”

[LAFAYETTE & LAURENS]
Ayyyyy

[MULLIGAN]
Lock up ya daughters and horses, of course
It’s hard to have intercourse over four sets of corsets…

Piglet89 · 30/07/2020 20:58

The only remotely catchy tune in it was “the Room where it Happens”.

PetitsGateaux · 30/07/2020 21:12

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/07/2020 21:51

In passing, I've just finished the book My Dear Eliza which is sort of fictionalised but sort of based on her/his remaining letters and I loved it too.

THE ORRRPHANAGE.

Chuly · 30/07/2020 23:26

Arf Grin at the Killer/ Lafayette meme

YeahWhatevver · 30/07/2020 23:50

Love the song with the king.

"I'll kill your friends and family to remind you of my love."

theluckiest · 31/07/2020 00:18

For me, it's layer upon layer of snippets, info and connections that explain why it took LMM so long to write.

I have listened to Hamilton a bajillion times over the past 4 years and find something new every single time.

For example, last week I learned that Burr's daughter, Theodosia (obv) died in a storm at sea aged 29 which gives 'Dear Theodosia' even more poignancy. Sad

Also, did you know that Burr's second wife was called Eliza? And that when she divorced him, used Alexander Hamilton Jnr (his son) as her divorce lawyer?? Presumably to really dig the knife in...

I mean, you seriously couldn't make this shit up. Come on HBO!! Gagging for a mini-series!!!

Comefromaway · 31/07/2020 00:31

Of course the real genius in the creation of Hamilton is Alex Lacamoire.

theluckiest · 31/07/2020 00:47

Oh come, @Comefromaway!! Yes, Alex Lacamoire is ALSO a genius but surely Hamilton's main USP is the lyrics??

'A bunch of revolutionary manumission abolitionists, show me your position, show me where the ammunition is...'

And
'So I'm the oldest and the wittiest and the gossip in New York City is insidious
And Alexander is penniless,
It doesn't mean I want him any less..'

Genius.

But then I guess it's like Lennon & McCartney. Lyrics or tunes?? Grin

Comefromaway · 31/07/2020 00:55

For me, it’s the music and the orchestrations MAKE it. That use of the cello. And the playoff.

The style of lyrics you quote is also in In the Heights and it’s not my favourite apparat.
