to use a potty in the park?

My 29 month old is a month into potty training. When he tells me 'weewee' I grab the potty from under the pram and let him use it. Is this ok?

I empty into a bush out of sight etc. Whole process takes about 20 seconds probably!

Is this only for wees?
Just let him do it like men do. Wink
Or use the public toilets.

For poos, if you are going to use a potty, then you should use a plastic lining and dispose of it properly.

I used to carry a toilet adaptor in a largish backpack for out and about.

Looneytune253 · 27/07/2020 15:59

If there's no toilets in the park then this is fine. I've seen people allowing their toddlers to pee on the ground when there's a toilet 50m away. I would still try and hide somewhere tho

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 15:59

Yes generally wees, and I deal with any poops with a bag etc.

I'm more asking about the etiquette around it. He doesn't know how to stand and wee yet. He's only newly trained.

I can try and hide more, guess I just need to work on making him wait slightly longer

I just don't see the need for this. I've potty trained two children and I just never needed to even consider bringing a potty!

Gulpingcoffee · 27/07/2020 16:01

I think it’s ok so long as it’s not right by a cafe. I was at my son’s swimming lesson and a toddler came swaggering down the side of the pool, naked from the waist down, with his mum trotting along behind clutching a potty. I did chuckle at that.

What did you do then?

Haha I agree! I wouldn't do that

I think the park is OK. None of the parks near me have toilets, I've used a bush once or twice myself

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 16:02

I'm now still thinking about this in depth! And thinking is it really any worse than a dog having a massive shit and then the owner coming along with a bag behind it? Probably not

I’ve never taken a potty out with me either. I find the whole idea of whipping out a potty so bizarre. Even when mine were newly trained they could make it to a toilet.

Guess not everyone is perfect! There are no loos at most of the recs here

Aridane · 27/07/2020 16:05

No, it’s not ok!

Please elaborate

Dreamingofkfc · 27/07/2020 16:07

It’s nothing to do with being perfect. We just went straight to using a toilet, I wasn’t then going to go backwards and carry a potty about - seems a bit unhygienic to me. However my children were a few months older than yours when trained

DontTouchTheMoustache · 27/07/2020 16:08

I used this potty cup when mine was little (still keep it in the car in case we get caught short on ling journeys).

Also YABU for saying 29 month old instead of 2 year old 🙈😂

2 is loads younger. Guess I could have said 2.5, but he's not

I didn't do this. I think I would rather have the odd accident than carry around a personal toilet on every outing. I do think mine did standing up wees from a young age. Etiquette wise I don't think there is any problem with it. Just sounds like a faff to me but if you are not bothered then I don't see why anyone else should be.

Oysterbabe · 27/07/2020 16:09

It's fine. Most parents would understand the need for this. Obviously not several on mumsnet whose children apparently had perfect bladder control from day 1.

Yes exactly! It's interesting anyway. I just was making sure it's not a complete No No

It's fine, we have done this and have seen lots of other parents doing so to. I'm intrigued how people with newly potty trained children managed to take them out and about without a potty with no accidents? Not everywhere has public toilets open, especially at the moment. OP I think you are overthinking this a bit, just go to a discrete corner and whip out the potty, no one will bat an eyelid as long as you are not doing it next to someone having a picnic or such.

Greysofa · 27/07/2020 16:10

I’ve never taken a potty out when DC have come out of nappies either. I waited until they were fully ready and it was done in a day or two. I didn’t want to have to trail a potty and a suitcase of spare clothes around and need to be asking every 5 mins either. I don’t think it’s ideal toileting children in public but this is just my opinion. If you’re happy to do it OP, then carry on.

LST · 27/07/2020 16:10

I have 2 boys so wees were easy. I never took a potty out. If it was a poo they'd have to wait to use a toilet.

Thank you for your very rational reply. I suspect I am overthinking!
