to use a potty in the park?

My 29 month old is a month into potty training. When he tells me 'weewee' I grab the potty from under the pram and let him use it. Is this ok?

I empty into a bush out of sight etc. Whole process takes about 20 seconds probably!

@DontTouchTheMoustache

I used this potty cup when mine was little (still keep it in the car in case we get caught short on ling journeys).

Also YABU for saying 29 month old instead of 2 year old 🙈😂

Haha I wish I'd know about these when DS was potty training.

Although I'd be worried about accidentally grabbing it when reaching for my water bottle.

Frazzled2207 · 27/07/2020 16:12

I did it. Park was about 20mins walk from house.
However once a bit older I would head to the trees in the park and lift them up underneath their knees. They couldn’t do a “wild wee” themselves until they were about 4

Alexandernevermind · 27/07/2020 16:12

@Oysterbabe Exactly!
I carried a potty for my daughter but not my son as he was okay standing or just peeing in his pants to be fair!

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 16:13

@Greysofa

I’ve never taken a potty out when DC have come out of nappies either. I waited until they were fully ready and it was done in a day or two. I didn’t want to have to trail a potty and a suitcase of spare clothes around and need to be asking every 5 mins either. I don’t think it’s ideal toileting children in public but this is just my opinion. If you’re happy to do it OP, then carry on.
My son is fully ready, but he's not going to perfect in a month... I mean, he's 99% there but...

Where are these unicorn children!

@LST

I have 2 boys so wees were easy. I never took a potty out. If it was a poo they'd have to wait to use a toilet.
How did you get a 2 year old to wait?!

You lost me after saying 29 months.

zoomzoghedgehog · 27/07/2020 16:13

I have taken potties out with both mine for the period following being newly potty trained if there is no toilet

nevermorelenore · 27/07/2020 16:14

I think potty is fine if out of sight. With toilets closed in so many places, it is awkward taking a toddler out.

I seem to remember a post on here where someone had witnessed a toddler taking a shit on the potty in the middle of Starbucks. So it could be worse.

garfieldrec · 27/07/2020 16:14

@HolyForkinShirt

You lost me after saying 29 months.
But here you are!!! I was just being accurate because for some it's helpful when speaking about milestones

Like a previous pp, I never had potties either. Make them go before you leave the house, and then make them wait until you can find a loo, or hold on until you get home. Bladders of steel my kids Grin.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/07/2020 16:15

Fine if you do it discreetly. Move him off the path or at least to the very edge, and stand between him and passers by. Don't plonk the potty in the middle of the path and make a performance of it.

FourPlasticRings · 27/07/2020 16:15

We have a pop up tent in the pram with the potty and I'd just stick the potty in there in theory. In practice, she's never needed it because I always make sure she goes on the potty just before we leave the house. If out with the car, I set the potty up in the boot and she uses it in there. She likes privacy when she is peeing.

Vinorosso74 · 27/07/2020 16:15

When they are that age it's fine. We had one of those Pottete potties which doubled up as a toilet seat. It didn't need emptying as it had a bag as the potty base so could just be binned. We also used to frequent a few parks with no public toilets nearby.
It was also useful on long car journeys when we'd been stuck in traffic and it was still some way to the nearest loo!

Chocoholic12 · 27/07/2020 16:15

Aged at dont see the need. I've never carried a potty around either. If he needs a wee just tell him to hold his willy and wee standing up it's not rocket science OP.

Chocoholic12 · 27/07/2020 16:16

Agree*

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/07/2020 16:16

Just let him pee in a bush or something. At 126 weeks old, he should be able to manage that. I'm guessing you are chucking it away anyway.

Nicknacky · 27/07/2020 16:16

How is saying 29 month old easier than saying 2.5 year old?

AlphaJura · 27/07/2020 16:17

I've never taken a potty out with me either. My son would just stand up to pee and never really liked the potty so he'd use public toilets (standing on my feet) or a bush if really desperate. My dd the same. No one really minds if little children are caught short and you find a bush. When they are a bit older, they should be able to hold it long enough to find a loo.

LST · 27/07/2020 16:17

OP tbh we never had a poo accident they were both pretty reliable after tea pooers.

Chocoholic12 · 27/07/2020 16:17

Oh god 29months 😂😂😂 your one of those 😂 your childs 2.

sunrainwind · 27/07/2020 16:17

We had a potette with liners I had in them bottom of the buggy. Only rarely used it if we were somewhere with no loo within a 5 min walk or so. If the park has a loo then I think YABU, if there's no easy access to a loo then YANBU!

Snailsetssail · 27/07/2020 16:17

My DS is 3 and will wee in a bush at the park. I wouldn’t like to risk him holding it for the walk home.

Cluckycluck · 27/07/2020 16:17

We had a carry potty that we took everywhere when we were training.
I would much rather see a child using a potty than just pissing on the floor or pissing in their clothes.

Don't worry about what anyone thinks. It's none of their business. If your potty training child needs to go let them go. If there is a toilet nearby use it, if there isn't or your child won't make it use the potty.

DappledThings · 27/07/2020 16:17

Couldn't be bothered to lug a potty about. But we have had plenty of wild wees. Both the 2 and 4 year olds had to go behind a tree today. We're working on standing/crouching but sometimes it involves a super speedy strip to the waist.

QueenofmyPrinces · 27/07/2020 16:19

I can’t articulate why, but I find it very grim when I see toddlers sitting on a potty having a poo/wee in front of everyone.

Nobody wants to see that Grin

I know I can all look away, and I do, but the initial glimpse of it just makes my toes curl Grin

I never had the need to take potties around with me when I trained my two children.

Each to their own though, I say Smile

If you are happy doing it then just carry on, don’t let the personal feelings of individuals that may pass you impact on your training. Potty/toilet training can be a bloody nightmare so just do whatever works for you and your little one Smile
