To report someone returning from Spain

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:08

A friend of my partner has said he has no intention of isolating on his return from Spain. Should I anonymously report them? My mum was on the shielding list and it’s making me quite angry. People who went abroad would know the risks during all of this....and then to refuse to isolate shows such arrogance and disregard for others.

I don’t know this person well and I don’t want to make my partner feel stuck in the middle.

We can say the government advice has been wishy washy....but it’s been pretty clear to say people should isolate on return from Spain.

assuming they went for two weeks and the government's announcement was on Saturday (IIRC) effective from midnight how is that "pretty clear" given that you all had nearly 2 weeks to get masks organised which is a lot less of a pain in the arse than coming back off holiday and not even being able to go to the supermarket?

Yet again the British (or is it English?) government makes itself a laughing stock.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 27/07/2020 14:25

You know that Spain is huge and that most areas of Spain still have really low instances of infection, right?

You can seriously see how the Stasi flourished.

This, in absolute spades. Covid has been an awful situation, but what's been the absolute shitty cherry on a pissy cake has been the self-appointed Covid Police bustling to the fore, with their pious monitoring of who has and hasn't stayed in/worn a mask/complied with their interpretation of The Rules.

So I was a curtain twitcher for reporting my neighbour’s carer for stealing from him?

Noted. But rather a curtain twitcher that a selfish bastard who wouldn’t report such things 🤷🏻‍♀️

Surely everyone knew there was a risk of this happening? If you were willing to go on holiday, you should be willing to isolate on your return, even if that wasn’t a condition when you left. I can’t believe there is anyone out there who hadn’t thought there was a possibility that might happen. We aren’t going on our holiday to Greece this year as we accepted there was the chance this could happen and couldn’t afford to have a further 2 weeks off work when we got back.

This is far worse than some of the other ‘crimes’ that most mumsnetters would be up in arms about, eg theft. The risk is there for the holiday maker to infect so many people, who in turn infect others. Deliberately putting other people at risk of what could be a fatal illness.

However I am also annoyed with the government for opening ‘air bridges’ with other countries. People can live without going abroad for this year and that would have meant this situation was Completely avoided.

This thread is reading like the Gammon groups on facebook.

Antisocial, dangerous and daft.

I wish I had written this.

@feistyoneyouare

I really hate this culture of reporting that seems to be becoming the norm these days. Imho some people need to read a copy of 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' and think again.
Agreed, the country was screwed up before March, now it's at a whole new level.

The best way forward now is to trust nobody (not that I ever did anyway).

I could have reported the shit out of (as has been used on this thread) my next door neighbour and the person who lives across the road as they "broke lockdown" from day one, the one across the road more so, as they had friends in and out of the place all the time. No thanks, I couldn't give two shits what they do.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/07/2020 14:28

Me and DH are going to Fuerteventura, so Spain, in September. It's safer there than here. Atm there's 43 cases, most of which are in an illegal immigration centre, on the island and to date there's been no deaths.

I live not too far from Leicester. I've got far more chance of catching it there but I can go there willy nilly without having to stay in for a fortnight when I get home.

This blanket rule on the whole of Spain makes no sense.

MzHz · 27/07/2020 14:29

Apparently the police have been absolutely inundated with calls to an unprecedented level.

Most of them curtain twitchers reporting on their neighbours

I hate what this country has become.

The people who want to go abroad are probably sick to the eyeballs of these fucking busybody dementors all frothing at the mouth at a hope for another wave so they can screech “told ya so”

But where is that wave they said was coming after Easter? After may bank holidays? After VE Day? After BLM?

Splattherat · 27/07/2020 14:30

Exactly @Billben

Vargas · 27/07/2020 14:30

YABU. Sanctimonious bullshit. Keep yourself masked up and locked down for as long as you like, but please leave others to follow guidelines or not as they see fit. If the government really think it's that important then they'll check, they don't need nosy curtain twitchers clogging phone lines. Find another hobby.

themental · 27/07/2020 14:31

If someone was coming back from one of the highly infected areas and worked in a care home for example and was saying they wouldn’t bother with quarantine and they hadn’t told their employer they were going away, would you really not let the home know? Would you really think it was none of your business? Would you perhaps only care if one of your loved ones was in that particular care home?

How can anyone possibly know if the person was more exposed to the virus than they were at Tesco on Sunday?

Are you living in the UK right now?

Are you aware that people are allowed in PUBS with no social distancing and no masks on?

Listen, I would be happy to follow these guidelines if the rules actually made any sort of sense.

But they don't.

Like I said above, my high risk gran is legally allowed down the pub twice a week with her pensioner bingo buddies... yet my kid can't go to a leisure centre?

The rules make no logical sense.

We need to get away from this mindset that people are killing people. Nobody is killing anyone. The virus is killing people. So wash your hands, wear a mask, and try to keep social distance where possible.

You wouldn't catch me in the pub without a mask but nor would you catch me reporting someone who went on holiday when they could just have easily LEGALLY spent the whole week in the pub with NO mask and NO social distance!

loobyloo1234 · 27/07/2020 14:32

FFS. MN is rife with grassing busy-bodies these days.

They got screwed over by a last minute rule change. Also your DM being on the shielding list? As long as she doesnt come into contact with them im sure she will be ok?

GarlicSoup · 27/07/2020 14:32

@GoddamnGodBless

Snitching is absolutely shameful.
FFS were not talking about playground tactics, this is a Global Pandemic.
WickedGoodDoge · 27/07/2020 14:32

We’re in Mallorca right now- fly back on Saturday. We live in Scotland and when we flew out we knew we were coming back to quarantine (NS lifted the quarantine for just a few days during our trip so current state no difference for us). It’s very very different out here and I feel at a much lower risk than in the UK. You need to wear a mask everywhere in public except on the beach and while seated at a restaurant. Everyone is wearing their masks and their is hand sanitiser when you walk into any shop or restaurant (and then bottles on restaurant tables) and everyone is using it. People are also social distancing as best they can while wearing their mask.

NoSquirrels · 27/07/2020 14:33

I've no idea how anyone thinks this is enforceable - it's up to people's consciences.

If your employer is expecting you back at work, you are worried you'll lose your job if you don't go in, then I expect most people won't quarantine. Rightly or wrongly, I expect that is the outcome.

The only thing I can see happening realistically is if your employer knew you had gone to Spain on holiday - perhaps your co-workers are concerned, or your manager knows your holiday plans - and they forbid you from coming to work until quarantine is over, and put you on unpaid leave. If I wanted my workplace to remain COVID-compliant, I wouldn't want my staff coming in if they'd returned off holiday abroad.

But that relies on companies knowing what their staffs plans are for holiday time, and trusting what they say.

PhilCornwall1 · 27/07/2020 14:34

For those that are saying MYOB and calling OP a snitch, would you say the same if she reported someone she saw drink driving, or talking on the phone while behind the wheel

Do you go on the motorway much? People on their phones are a regular occurrence. You'd have no time left in your day if you reported them all.

IndecentFeminist · 27/07/2020 14:34

They should have allowed those who went away before the quarantine to be exempt, except for those from heavily affected areas. Anyone who flies out after has to comply.

userxx · 27/07/2020 14:36

You need to get a grip and get a life.

Lweji · 27/07/2020 14:37

I can speak about Portugal.
The risk for tourists doing tourist activities is minimal.

Most cases have been in outbreaks among working people in factories or similar, and families. Or people using crowded public transport.

Hotels and restaurants, as well as museums and beaches, have strict regulations and workers have been wearing masks for weeks now and working in mirror teams.
Restaurants have limited occupancy, or much bigger outdoor areas.

In that sense, tourists in countries like Portugal and Spain, despite some high transmission areas, are probably safer or just as safe as being in the UK and going to the shops.

The UK quarantine rules for travellers seem more like a token measure than anything.

wanderings · 27/07/2020 14:37

What will all the grasses and wannabe Stasi do when the pandemic is over?

Bingo card on this thread: tick tick tick.

LakieLady · 27/07/2020 14:37

Even the Transpot minister has been caught out. If he quarantined then so should the others but if he breaks the rules (like so many of the shit govt ) then he reaps what he sows!

I believe that there's a blanket exemption for diplomats and others engaged on government business, so Grant Shapps/Michael Green won't have to bother.

Shame really, if the government had quarantined itself in its entirety early in March and left it to the civil service, NHS etc to sort out, the death toll probably would have been lower.
