To report someone returning from Spain

Archie1989 · 27/07/2020 13:08

A friend of my partner has said he has no intention of isolating on his return from Spain. Should I anonymously report them? My mum was on the shielding list and it’s making me quite angry. People who went abroad would know the risks during all of this....and then to refuse to isolate shows such arrogance and disregard for others.

I don’t know this person well and I don’t want to make my partner feel stuck in the middle.

Madbirdlady22- you are spot on.

jessstan2 · 28/07/2020 23:30

@FluffyKittensinabasket

Only on Mumsnet can people be “reported” for every transgression,
Yep. Grasses all.
Newbiehere123 · 28/07/2020 23:40

You are mean. It's safer in Spain than here btw! People like you are costing our economy. Your local Asda has more risk than this friend of yours. I saw so many neighbours ignoring the lockdown rules at the start and never reported them and guess what, the rates are down despite mass protests, football celebrations, pubs opening. Open your eyes for gods sake and stop being so scared.

madbirdlady22 · 29/07/2020 11:34

sara the decision rests with the Prime Minister but the advice is produced and acted from SAGE.
How would any Prime Minister know the complexities of a virus, any virus?? Of course they wouldn't. The government are making decisions based on the advice from SAGE. End of. You may not agree or like it, but that is how it works. It may not fit your anti Boris narrative, but any government be it labour or conservative would be making the SAME decisions, hence Nicola also coming to the same conclusion (and she has no reason whatsoever to agree with Westminster on anything!)

new your information is wildly out of date. I suggest you go and listen to the news, and look at real time stats.

WindSurfer37 · 29/07/2020 11:39

I recently reported the same, so yes I would. Police were useless at first but I've kept escalating and escalating it. I also wrote to my MP.

As someone who has lost 3 people to this virus so far "I'm alright jack" isn't good enough in my opinion.

Did you actually report and escalated a complaint about someone who said they wouldn't comply with quarantine?

What did the police say or do in the end?

WindSurfer37 · 29/07/2020 11:50

@Lweji I'm in Scotland so our quarantine rules were in place with Spain whilst they weren't in England.

I know of someone who returned from Spain and was back at work 1 week later when they should have been on 1 week quarantine. Unfortunately she owns the company so not as easy as reporting to employer.

The police took details but did not attend. I called every day to report him at work Mon-Fri and escalated higher every time.

It's not a case of them just attending and fining. They contact the Home Office to make sure they're not on the excerpt list etc and there is a process they have to go through. Essentially it's still ongoing but knowing their car registration and workplace they'll be able to trace through CCTV and fine if they decide they should. Isn't necessarily catching them live in the act.

WindSurfer37 · 29/07/2020 11:51

*should have been on 2 week quarantine rather

Ugh. How unpleasant to do that to someone. Fair enough if you feel they’ve broken quarantine then report giving your name, but to persistently follow it up like an obsession is really odd. Odd and frankly very unsavoury. What do you want them to do to your friend? Prison? Hung, drawn and quartered?

ineedaholidaynow · 29/07/2020 12:56

Was just reading another thread about travel to Australia and you have to go into a quarantine hotel there and pay for the privilege. But I suppose they are not allowing non-essential travel so not so many people impacted.

notimagain · 29/07/2020 13:06

TBH obsession or not I'm fascinated by the idea the police need to actually talk to somebody at the Home Office to see if an individual is on some list....TBH I'm a bit Hmm.

The exempt occupations and any restrictions attached to them are listed on the HMG website so it should be pretty easy for the police to determine whether the person of interest is exempt from quarantine

MaxNormal · 29/07/2020 13:08

@WindSurfer37 that is such bizarre and spiteful behaviour on your part.

WindSurfer37 · 29/07/2020 13:14

Unpleasant and spiteful maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️ And yet still... nowhere near as unpleasant as spiteful as the people breaking the law and putting lives at risk.

Alsohuman · 29/07/2020 13:15

It certainly is. I’m aghast that anyone should go to such pains to be so nasty and spiteful.

MsTSwift · 29/07/2020 13:16

I would not want to be in windsurfers head. That was a weird read. What is wrong with you?

madbirdlady22 · 29/07/2020 13:18

also I am aghast that anyone would ignore the guidance and potentially put so many lives at risk by going to work every day.

MaxNormal · 29/07/2020 13:18

It's a very good reminder not to tell anyone IRL my business and be very mindful of what I put on social media, anyway.

madbirdlady22 · 29/07/2020 13:19

If it wasn't for those with a conscience we would see many more tens of thousands dead for sure.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 29/07/2020 13:19

Jesus Christ @windsurfer37, do you really have nothing else to do?

I fear the country is falling apart with everyone falling over themselves to report and worry about what other people are doing. Get a grip people.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/07/2020 13:19

I agree, reporting is essential if people won’t adhere to the law to keep others safe.

No different to reporting any other law breaking incident.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 29/07/2020 13:24

But the police are doing fuck all about it to seriously, what is the point? Repeatedly call the policy day after day is the seriously obsessive busybody behaviour of someone who has nothing better to do.

WindSurfer37 · 29/07/2020 13:26

I wouldn't say I reported it obsessively. I reported it 5 days... one for each day they didn't follow the law and went to work - which was 5 days.

If they'd broke the law once, I would have reported it once. If they'd broke the law twice I would have reported it twice.

I escalated it at the point where they were STILL going to work even after being reported each day.

Like I say, think of it what you want. I've lost 3 people close to me from Covid (whose funerals I couldn't attend) If you haven't been personally affected then maybe you're happy with people returning from abroad and putting lives in danger... but I'm not. My conscience is clear.

Alsohuman · 29/07/2020 13:27

It’s worse than that. It’s an example of how careful we’d need to be in a police state. It really scares me that people like this exist.
chocolatesaltyballs22 · 29/07/2020 13:28

And what did you achieve by that? Did the person in question get fined? Do you sit at your window all day watching what all the neighbours are up to? I really couldn't be bothered.

Mischance · 29/07/2020 13:28

I would report them. I am in a vulnerable group - it is people like this who make me even more vulnerable
