6.40am is an acceptable time for a 4yo to get up?

My DD just turned 4. She is always asleep by 7pm, sometimes earlier.

She's up for the day at 6.40am. My parents think this is far too early and don't believe me when I say many of her peers get up even earlier especially in the summer months.

They're also aghast that we use a gro clock and keep asking when we will 'wean her off it'.

6:40, regularly would be a real touch. Sometimes 4am, sometimes 5, usually 5:50 she's up. 6:40 is nothing to sniff at in the summer months (treacherous bleeding sun!!!)

ElBandito · 27/07/2020 08:29

Just nod, smile and ignore.

Gigglebert · 27/07/2020 08:30

I wish mine slept till then! 😂

Realladymarmalade · 27/07/2020 08:31

My 6 year old still gets up then and my 9 year old shortly after. It's when we get up on a school day so I have no issue. They come I for a cuddle them tiptoe downstairs for TV..

Tilly28 · 27/07/2020 08:31

Sounds normal to me. Our 3 are all 5 and under! They are in bed 6.30/7pm and up from 6/6.30am. Some of their friends sleep in later but they generally go to bed later too! We like our evening of peace so it works for us!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 27/07/2020 08:32

Gro clocks are bloody wonderful arent they?

I really dont see your parents' issue. She is early to bed, early to rise, and gets 11.5 hrs sleep.

OfTheNight · 27/07/2020 08:32

6:40 is a lie in here! DS (6) very rarely sleeps past 5am. He’s never been ‘a sleeper’ so I just accept it. 6:40 would be lovely, it doesn’t seem early at all.

Ragwort · 27/07/2020 08:32

Why are your DPs so involved in the discussion? What on earth has it got to do with them? Hmm Unless you are complaining to them about the time your child wakes up.

TheSandgroper · 27/07/2020 08:33

The first time dd slept in until then, I was ready to call an ambulance. Usually, our day was well underway by then.

Realladymarmalade · 27/07/2020 08:33

The 9 year old often stats in bed and reads.
640 sounds appropriate in the summer tbf
But not long till she can be reliably trained to entertain herself etc for half an hour or so.

xyzandabc · 27/07/2020 08:33

I have an 11 yr old that is usually up by then, she's always been an early riser. Difference being now she gets up and makes herself tea and porridge or an omlette!

FourEyesGood · 27/07/2020 08:34

My DS (12) has always woken up between 5.30 and 6.15, since he was about two. It’s just what he does. It’s fine - he entertains himself. As he becomes more teenagery, I expect it’ll change and he’ll start sleeping later, but at the moment, I’m happy with him having an early start.

crumpet · 27/07/2020 08:34

I used to count anything after 6am as fair game

angelopal · 27/07/2020 08:35

That's pretty much 12 hours of sleep so sounds fine. DS is normally up by 6.15 so we are used to early starts.

Realladymarmalade · 27/07/2020 08:35

Love it ! My 9 yo brings me a cuppa if requested.

Bananabread8 · 27/07/2020 08:35

I’d say that time is about right to wake up OP as she goes to bed early. My DS is sleeping by that time on a school night too. I think people forget they need their sleep.

FelicityPike · 27/07/2020 08:35

My DD is 5 and she gets up at 6:15. I’m hoping that changes in a few weeks when she starts school!

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 27/07/2020 08:36

6.40am seems a normal time for children to wake to me though mine have to stay upstairs until 7am

Stanleyville · 27/07/2020 08:36

Why does it bother your parents? It's odd they comment, unless you've been moaning. If she's been set at early to bed, she'll be early to rise.

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 27/07/2020 08:37

Very normal

Scruffyoak · 27/07/2020 08:37

Any time after 6 is fine in my house.

10&11 year old here. 6.40am is a lie in. Always been 6am here but they do read quietly till 6.30ish now they are older. Unfortunately they go to bed at 9pm now do I have no morning or evening!!

switswoo81 · 27/07/2020 08:38

My 2 and 5 to stay up till 8/8:30 and are still asleep now probably sleep till after 9. I'd find it very hard to get them to bed before then in the bright evenings . We might go to the park after tea or the older one is out playing with friends or in the back garden.
Will all change in September though after 6 months off!

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 27/07/2020 08:39

Mine is the same. 6am to 6.20 and the odd 5.30 thrown in. Gro clock keeps him in bed till 6.45. My PIL want to know when we'll get him to sleep later 🤷‍♀️ We actually used to put him to bed at 7.30 but have moved it forward so he gets more sleep and it's worked so well. He's much calmer now.

PumpkinParent · 27/07/2020 08:41

Six and three here and they are both up by 6am most days. Both go to bed as close to 7pm as possible (the six year old needs his sleep) but at the moment the nearly three year old is trying to drop her nap so often a bit wild at bedtime, depending on whether or not she has napped. My parents also regularly counsel me that the kids get up too early and that I should just “make them stay in bed”.
