6.40am is an acceptable time for a 4yo to get up?

My DD just turned 4. She is always asleep by 7pm, sometimes earlier.

She's up for the day at 6.40am. My parents think this is far too early and don't believe me when I say many of her peers get up even earlier especially in the summer months.

They're also aghast that we use a gro clock and keep asking when we will 'wean her off it'.

Personally it would kill me, but it’s certainly not unusual.

As surely the gro clock is a good thing if you don’t want her waking too early?

LinManWellWellWell · 27/07/2020 10:50

7pm-6.40am sounds amazing!!

Scruffyoak · 27/07/2020 10:54

I agree its perfect for school

jessstan2 · 27/07/2020 11:09

I can't imagine mine being up that early (nor me), unless there was a reason for it. There's nothing wrong with it as long as she doesn't expect the household to be up and attentive at that time.

MintyMabel · 27/07/2020 11:34

We finally got rid of the gro clock about a year ago. DD was 10. They are a great invention!

6.40 would be too early for me. But if it works for you, then it’s fine.

PrincessBuggerPants · 27/07/2020 11:40

When are they going to be weaned off their lack of boundaries and unreasonable expectations?

chubbyhotchoc · 27/07/2020 11:44

Pretty darn good I'd say.

locked2020 · 27/07/2020 11:49

That's fine. My son 4, is an early riser no matter what time he's in bed. My daughter is a year older and will get up roughly 11 hours after she goes to bed and prefers a later night. I put them all down around 7/730 and daughter just reads in bed. When sin gets up too early, I give him an ipad to bribe him back to his bed for a bit. ive got a baby now so just miss sleep generally!

locked2020 · 27/07/2020 11:53

@LiquidGoldDrink how do you train them to rest?

missy111 · 27/07/2020 11:54

My 7 year old is up at 6am every day...very occasionally 7, but that's the limit!
We've tried later bed times, earlier bed times, black our blinds..nothing makes a big of difference.

GinDrinker00 · 27/07/2020 11:55

My 4 year old wakes up at around 8.30am but doesn’t go to sleep till 11pm. 😬

YANBU though he used to get up around 5am when he slept better/earlier at night.

IdblowJonSnow · 27/07/2020 12:07

It's none of their business! That sounds like a good long sleep.

We all go to bed much later and get up much later but less time on an evening. Works for us!

Thislittlelady · 27/07/2020 12:21

Sounds like she’s getting the sleep she needs. What’s a gro clock?

Enderman · 27/07/2020 12:23

My 5 year old gets up at 5.30 if not earlier! I would love 6.40. How are you supposed to stop them?

CremeEggThief · 27/07/2020 12:30

I've put YANBU, but I couldn't have coped personally with that early a wakeup time. My DS never got up before 8 a.m. at the very earliest. We were very lucky that he'd sleep 12 hours from whenever he went to bed until he was about 4, so we could have him up on holidays until 1 a.m. and he'd sleep in til lunchtime the next day. Result!Grin

He's 17 now and often spends the whole day in bed. Good lad!

Dylaninthemovies1 · 27/07/2020 12:32

My son is 4 and will wake any time between 4 and 10am, but usually 7ish (if before 6 he is sent back and told its the middle of the night). But, for most other 4 year olds I know, it’s 6am or even earlier!

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 27/07/2020 13:33

I'm realizing that I must have been lucky as my twins weren't up before 7am most of the time. From 4-5 we used a gro clock and at the weekend we established that until 8am they were to play quietly in their bedroom but not wake us up or leave the room - which they seemed happy to do.

Ah well, you win some you loose some - they are great on the sleep front but not that good for other things. I am sure all your early risers are great eaters or super early readers etc

Chocoholic12 · 27/07/2020 16:27

Mine never got up at that hour but he was a lazy boy.

MsEllany · 27/07/2020 16:32

It sounds early to me, but she’s not my child and it’s obviously normal to you.

At 4 (we also had a gro clock) they were allowed up that early but to play in their room till 7am. However as twins they a) kept themselves entertained quite nicely and b) were noisy and woke us anyway Grin

Can’t remember with DS3 but he was probably the same.

Emeraldshamrock · 27/07/2020 16:35

I'm really jealous. My 5 y.o will not sleep unless he has been awake for a least 16 hours. It takes ages to wake him at 7.30 am if he sleeps in any later he won't sleep at all at night. I get up at 7am to start waking him.
He gave up naps at 9 months.

LynseyLou1982 · 27/07/2020 16:51

My 2 year old is up at 6:15every week day as he has nursery. Some weekends he'll sleep till 7am but no later. We've just introduced a gro clock and he loves it

EverydayCook · 27/07/2020 16:57

I sympathise OP. My in-laws are totally aghast at the fact that our children (all of them) sleep until 6am, at the latest.

They insist that they NEVER would have tolerated their children waking before 8am, and simply can't understand why we would ALLOW such a thing.

If I had any way to get them to sleep longer, I would. Even if they have a really late night they are still up a 6am. Except miserable.

Insideout99 · 27/07/2020 17:40

Very normal time. I ask mine to play quietly in their room til 7🤷‍♀️

tulippa · 27/07/2020 17:52

DS woke up at 5 every morning at that age. 6.40 would have been a veritable lie in!

What time does nursery start that he has to rise at 6.15am?
