To find people who dislike animals a bit cold in general

Yes it’s probably goady. Yes I’ve made an apt name change but...

Honestly - anyone I’ve ever met who’s “not an animal person” always seems to be a bit... off.

I’m not talking about those who are say scared of dogs, or a bit mistrustful of cats. I mean those who are very much “it’s just an animal” (and no I don’t include farmers in this either.

I know plenty of people who are nervous of animals and they’re lovely / but have known maybe around 3 people who really are jist “who cares” and they are not so nice.

I like cats and dogs but def no other animals

TibetanTerrier · 26/07/2020 19:30

@Danglingmod
Just don't really get the point of pets and prefer a clean house.

They're not mutually exclusive.

smokescreen · 26/07/2020 19:31

I like animals from a distance-a photo, someone else's pet, a zoo even but don't really like to be in close proximity to them for long periods of time. A quick pet of a dog, stroke of a cat and I'm done thank you very much

Sparklesocks · 26/07/2020 19:31

Maybe you just haven’t met that many people? Seems unfair to stick a big generalisation on such a huge group. I’m an animal person but I understand others who aren’t. That doesn’t mean they are bad people.

Sakura7 · 26/07/2020 19:31

I also think it odd how many of the self-described pet lovers are happy to say they hate children, would choose the life of a cat over someone else's child.

Sorry, what? Do you actually know people in real life who have expressed this view?

The assumptions being made about animal lovers here are ridiculous. I love cats, have had at least one for most of my life, and I wouldn't consider their lives more valuable than a child's. I can't imagine many people would, it would be really fucking weird.

ZeldalovesLink · 26/07/2020 19:32

I think a lot of posters are underestimating the sheer amount of cognitive dissonance the majority of people happily live with.

OP - it’s true of you too! You’re talking about people not being fussed about animals being cold, but you must be fairly cold about animals yourself if you aren’t vegetarian or vegan. There’s simply no way you could eat a steak or a cube of cheese if you truly did love animals.

Maybe you only mean ‘pets’ rather than ‘animals’ - I think that would be a fairer picture of most people in the U.K.. Lots of people are pet lovers but call themselves animal lovers when the reality is they really aren’t bothered by animals at all if they aren’t cats, dogs, horses or rabbits.

HolyForkinShirt · 26/07/2020 19:33

I have a few friends in the animal industry. They are insanely weird and wacky.

I don't think it's a good way to judge character to say if you don't like animals, you are cold.

Of course if you a cruel to them, that's a completely different situation.

smokescreen · 26/07/2020 19:34

Having said that, I'll watch any wildlife documentary going. Except about snakes or sharks. Zero interest

fairlyplump · 26/07/2020 19:34

Have to agree with op, animal lovers always seem kinder, more empathetic and generally nicer people. I work in a large department and can honestly say the animal lovers are far nicer people.

Boomwhatwasthis · 26/07/2020 19:35

Yup, can't stand the "it's just a cat/dog/hamster" brigade.

runrabbitrunrunrun · 26/07/2020 19:36

Non vegan ‘animal lovers’ are psychopaths.

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 19:38

Sorry but those talking about keeping houses clean and dog poo to me are the ones I mean. How do you feel about children messing up your home etc?

OP posts:
Miriel · 26/07/2020 19:38

Sakura7 Not in real life, thankfully, but I've seen it several times in comments on MN and on other forums over the years. Usually where the OP needs to rehome a pet because of problems with a new baby or something similar. Several pages in, things get weird.

It's bizarre and I'd like to think that they're only saying it to get a reaction from people and don't mean it, but even making a statement like that to troll a thread is creepy.

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 19:39

I’m not saying someone should have a pet by any means - but it’s that “ewww imagine a dog/cat/whatever messing up my pristine home”.
How do you handle children/ a slightly messy do etc? That I find cold.

LordOftheRingz · 26/07/2020 19:41

My kids have never routinely crapped or pissed on my floor.

Yep, there was a thread on here the other day when posters were falling over themselves to say that they love their dog more than their kids!

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 19:44

@PumpkinP now that was bonkers. That’s not what I mean at all!

OP posts:
Funguy · 26/07/2020 19:45

I find people who say things like this a bit weird, yes.
Some people do not like children.
A lack of empathy is common.
PS we are not talking about people 'obsessed' with animals, whatever that is to you, Arrivederla...
I am not sure why you think Carouselfish's comment is nonsense any more than yours is.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/07/2020 19:47

Yes I’ve noticed people who don’t really like animals and can see them suffer also have a very superficial interest in human welfare too.

But, you can fool some of the people all of the time & they get by.

Humans are animals after all.

PeartreeProductions · 26/07/2020 19:48

Wouldn't trust them with a rubber tipped barge poll.

Mischance · 26/07/2020 19:53

Well I am not an animal lover in the sense that I do not want one in my home and do not like (understatement) other people's dogs (in particular) drooling and sniffing my crotch, jumping up and covering me in mud and slobbering everywhere (Ah - he really likes you!) - but I am incensed by animal cruelty particularly from those who purport to be animal lovers - tail docking springs instantly to mind; or in-breeding to the point where they need help to mate, or cannot breathe properly.

Daftodil · 26/07/2020 19:54

What is going on?! Some posters have taken "not an animal person" to mean "a person that enjoys animal cruelty"!

I'm "not an animal person" in the same way that I'm "not a car person" or "not a beach person". It's a preference rather than a personality defect. I don't want to sit on a beach, I don't want to hear about what sort of engine your car has and I don't want to hear you talk about your cat's "personality". I find animals boring. Don't want a pet, don't want to hear about other people's pets (& REALLY don't want your pet jumping up at me or my toddler no matter how friendly you think your dog is). It isn't anything against animals, I like seeing different species if I'm out in nature, but I just wouldn't want one in the house.

I actually think some people who profess to be "animal lovers" are far more cruel than they realise. Does a goldfish want to live in isolation in a tiny tank? Does a budgie want to be kept in a cage? Does a dog want to be left alone in a house all day while its owners go to work/school? Does a horse want to have a saddle on his back? And do any of these animals want their nads chopped off?

GinDaddyRedux · 26/07/2020 19:55

What is your focus on this "finding someone cold" thing?!

If someone has DCs that are old enough to listen to instruction and play in certain areas, then their houses can remain "pristine" once they've all tidied up. It's not beyond the wit and ken of mankind to understand that an animal, which doesn't respond to tidying commands, might disrupt that persons vision of their home.

That doesn't make them "cold". It means they have a preference.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 19:57

How are you a true animal lover if you eat a whole bunch of them 😂😂😂

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/07/2020 19:57

Dogs in particular are good judges of character

They really aren't. Dogs will quite often show loyalty to someone who treats them horrifically.
