To find people who dislike animals a bit cold in general

Yes it’s probably goady. Yes I’ve made an apt name change but...

Honestly - anyone I’ve ever met who’s “not an animal person” always seems to be a bit... off.

I’m not talking about those who are say scared of dogs, or a bit mistrustful of cats. I mean those who are very much “it’s just an animal” (and no I don’t include farmers in this either.

I know plenty of people who are nervous of animals and they’re lovely / but have known maybe around 3 people who really are jist “who cares” and they are not so nice.

Someone who demonstrates such an overwhelming capacity for compartmentalising their emotions depending on the type of animal and whether they want to eat it or not might be more of a worry, personality-wise, surely?

Indeed!

@Linemanfort

Yeah it's not selfless. Plus pet ownership actually impacts negatively on the natural world in terms of waste, noise, habitat destruction etc. So you might be friendly disposed towards your pet but by engaging in the very human activity of owning one you are adversely affecting animals.
Fully agree. Unfortunately this is one of those inconvenient truths that a lot of people would rather ignore because if they faced up to it, they would have to make some difficult decisions about pet ownership. I think a minority of pets are great for things like medical issues and mental health and at least walking dogs encourages more exercise, but the negative impacts that they have are huge and most people really don’t want to think about that part.

Animals didn't beat me with a stick or repeatedly slap me round the head so the bruising wouldn't show when I was a child.

Animals didn't refuse any physical contact (other than the aforementioned occasions) when I was a child.

Animals didn't tell me I was stupid, ugly, clumsy and useless when I was a child.

Animals didn't ignore me for days on end for no reason I knew of when I was a child.

Animals didn't lie to me.

Animals didn't destroy my possessions or burst into my bedroom at 3.30am, switch the light on and pull my shelves down to give me something to tidy up.

As an adult, animals didn't deliberately do things to make me feel bad.

As an adult, animals didn't cheat, rape or strangle me to get their sexual kicks.

Animals don't deliberately destroy things out of jealousy. They don't kill things for sport and the 'near sexual thrill' of seeing other animals ripped to pieces.

Damn right that on the whole, I prefer animals to humans.

My daughter isn't an animal lover, adores people though and is in no way cold

Bbang · 27/07/2020 17:31

I don’t mind animals but I don’t like pets. I don’t think I’m cold or unfeeling, I’m quite a warm person and often described as kind or a people person. I just don’t like the idea of a pet, zoo trip etc.

@ZeldalovesLink I do understand what veganism is, but I also understand about ecology, land management, food production etc and I'm aware of the bigger picture, which is something that many vegans seem to be completely oblivious to.

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman has already covered most of it. But like many other none vegans, my concern lies with animal welfare and improving it. Not exchanging one bad practice for others a million times more horrific so I can put it out of sight and out of mind.

I think factory farming is abhorrent, hence not supporting it in anyway. But if we all decided to follow the vegan philosophy the (admittedly low) minimum protection animals have in the human food chain would completely disappear and compared to the hell that would be inflicted uk factory farms and conveyer style slaughter would look like a Disney film. And please don't tell me livestock etc would gradually disappear. It hasn't yet happened for all the unwanted ponies and cobs bred every year, that if they're lucky end up in a uk slaughter house.

To add to the environment argument, it's completely irrational to suggest being vegan is better on principle. A diet based on whatever is available or can be produced locally with minimal damage is the best thing for the environment. And in many places, particularly in the uk, that's an omnivorous diet. Buying a load of imported plastic wrapped food doesn't become environmentally friendly because it's labelled vegan. And eating locally raised meat doesn't automatically become damaging because vegans don't understand how ecology and land/ food production works.

I think what makes me laugh the most about the vegan movement is their widespread use of the big supermarkets. The big names that played a massive role in the change from traditional farming to factory, and forced the price of animal products, and therefore welfare to the floor.

All that said, if people choose to be vegan on an individual level I can respect that. I just disagree with the myth it makes them kinder/ more respectful of animals. And I have zero respect for the vegan movement as a whole, not only for the reasons I've already explained, but because the extreme, uninformed and often batshit theories are counterproductive to improving welfare.

I agree. Yanbu

lemyn · 27/07/2020 23:49

@LioneIRichTea Yep! They start by hurting those who are vulnerable.

How people treat animals, children and those whom are vulnerable in any way says a lot about them. That doesn't mean that if you don't want children you're a bad person, but if you were to torment, pick on and not empathise with one theres a red flag.

I'll never understand why people have pets if they are just going to lock them outside, feed them and maybe take them for a walk here and there. They deserve attention and love just as much as we do.

funinthesun19 · 28/07/2020 08:47

The only animal I don’t really like are dogs.
I think it’s mainly down to their irritating owners who are even worse.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 28/07/2020 10:37

I always appreciate a good sweeping generalisation...

funinthesun19 · 28/07/2020 13:44

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman, Is that aimed at me?
It’s mainly the ones who are convinced that their dog would never ever in a billions years snap and bite. “No my baby would never do that”. Well, they could do because they’re a dog Confused.
And then they get all angry when someone suggests that their dog could bite someone. Those owners are not only irritating but dangerous.

That’s just one of the things on the list anyway...
