To find people who dislike animals a bit cold in general

Yes it’s probably goady. Yes I’ve made an apt name change but...

Honestly - anyone I’ve ever met who’s “not an animal person” always seems to be a bit... off.

I’m not talking about those who are say scared of dogs, or a bit mistrustful of cats. I mean those who are very much “it’s just an animal” (and no I don’t include farmers in this either.

I know plenty of people who are nervous of animals and they’re lovely / but have known maybe around 3 people who really are jist “who cares” and they are not so nice.

Also @Tinhatattheready read my post above.

You are basically calling out a group of perfectly warm and normal human beings for being "cold" just because they don't want an animal rushing through their house.

You are asking everyone's human character to be judged by the animal-tinted lens through which you see the world.

It's such a weak form of argument I find.

isabellerossignol · 26/07/2020 20:00

@Tinhatattheready

Sorry but those talking about keeping houses clean and dog poo to me are the ones I mean. How do you feel about children messing up your home etc?
I don't think a child making a mess is comparable to dog hair and picking up poo to be honest. And I do like dogs, I like them a lot and I grew up always having pet dogs. And I have had a dog of my own in the past as well.

But I think a bit of Lego on the floor is an entirely different prospect to the smell of wet dog for example.

Montsti · 26/07/2020 20:01

I agree with you. I can’t warm to people who don’t like animals...

Mangofandangoo · 26/07/2020 20:02

I tend to agree, although DH tells me I'm cold towards cats (because I hate them) and that always upsets me. I don't intentionally act cold around them and I would never want to see one harmed.

Love all other animals

SmileyClare · 26/07/2020 20:03

I'm finding this thread odd.

You can't judge a character on whether they're an "animal person" whatever the heck that means. Everyone is defining this "type" differently on here.

Op, your example; Someone who doesn't understand a person would be upset if their pet dies

Are you describing someone you know? You're being oddly specific. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't understand that the death of a pet is sad. Confused

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 20:03

I’m not saying I find those who don’t have pets cold - I’ve had many years without having pets - they’re a bind etc. But I still like Them.

A week after our cat died I got a text asking if it was too soon to ask about Christmas.

It was cruel to ask me.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:05

You like the taste of them

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:06

Ask what about Christmas

EnidMatilda · 26/07/2020 20:06

I am not an animal person and do often feel 'it's just a pet' but I adore children and am very warm and friendly. I do think it's a common opinion though as I often keep my indifference towards animals a secret.

SmileyClare · 26/07/2020 20:09

Do you have any opinion on animals being bred and kept as pets? Animals (e.g. birds, reptiles etc) kept in cages or tanks? Is it actually kinder not to keep certain pets in your home?

IsThisTheKrustyKrab · 26/07/2020 20:09

I personally love animals but accept some people don't. There's a difference between being cruel to animals and just being a bit indifferent. It doesn't have any bearing on their personality as a whole IMO.

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 20:09

@PablosHoney that’s a fair point, I like pigs but yes I also eat them. However I think that’s the case for the majority of “animal lovers” including those who found rescues, work for animal charities etc.

OP posts:
PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 20:10

Probably but it’s massively hypocritical.

okeypoke · 26/07/2020 20:11

I'm in the camp of don't say you're an animal lover unless you're vegan.

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 20:12

@SmileyClare no I’m describing a few people I’ve met and also a few I know well. And I don’t mean “non- pet owners”. I mean people who see say a baby penguin, puppy, kitten whatever and say “meh”. Or people who see one of those sad rescue stories and aren’t moved.

To be fair I’d say the same to anyone who watches an appeal for the children of Syria and say “oh well”

OP posts:
ALongHardWinter · 26/07/2020 20:12

There are different degrees of not liking animals. There are people who are totally indifferent to them, the ones who say 'It's only a cat,why are you getting so upset?' when your beloved pet dies. These people strike me as a bit odd and a bit cold.
Then you've got the ones who actively hate animals and mistreat them. But I don't think that was what you were referring to.

Tinhatattheready · 26/07/2020 20:14

@PablosHoney not sure where you want me to go with this? I should become vegan and then I’m allowed to have my opinion?
Or should I just kick puppies as- as I’m not a vegan I obviously don’t give a fuck?
@Tinamou

Humans are objectively a HORRIBLE species.

I'm highly fond of about fifty of the buggers, but by any reasonable standards we're collectively a horrible lot.
See I agree with this. I'm not overly animal obsessed but it doesn't shock me when people say they prefer animals to humans.

We aren't that great really as a whole. Animals on the other hand have no real agenda other than pure survival. They aren't cruel or mean, they don't abuse people, they aren't racist etc... They just are. I like that and I agree that as a species, humans are up there as the absolute worst of the worst.

Housewoes23 · 26/07/2020 20:15

Yanbu. I always question their intellect and could never become anything further than aquainted.

SmileyClare · 26/07/2020 20:15

A week after my cat died, somebody asked if it was too soon to ask about Christmas. It was cruel to ask me

I'm not seeing the cruelty? Perhaps a little thoughtless at most? Perhaps they were trying to cheer you up or take your mind off things?

AintNoMaryPoppins · 26/07/2020 20:16

@Porcupineinwaiting

Dogs in particular are good judges of character

They really aren't. Dogs will quite often show loyalty to someone who treats them horrifically.

Like people then really?
crosser62 · 26/07/2020 20:16

I dislike animals. I especially dislike dogs.

Yet I absolutely love anything David Attenborough and watch with fascination anything that comes on with him attached to.

I’m nice, I care for humans as a job. I deeply care for humans.
Just not animals in real life. Nor do I eat them.

AintNoMaryPoppins · 26/07/2020 20:17

Essentially to me, you can't get more pure innocence than an animal (other than a baby/child).

ZeldalovesLink · 26/07/2020 20:18

I like pigs but yes I also eat them. However I think that’s the case for the majority of “animal lovers” including those who found rescues, work for animal charities etc.

Just because it’s true of many doesn’t mean it’s not hypocritical. There are lots of hypocrites!

I don’t think you can be an animal lover if you aren’t vegan. At best you’re a person who likes pets.
