To think I am not overweight?

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

I’m 5’5 and at 11 stone I was just slightly overweight and a size 14, so at 2 inches shorter I’m surprised you’re a size 10... is that in tailored clothes? Because I can still fit into smaller sizes if they’re slightly stretchy or not tight styles.

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 07:57

I'm a size 10 in most high street shops - new look, M&S, NEXT etc

Well going on my size at 5ft6 and 9st11 I am in the normal weight category with a BMI of 22 and I still just about get into size 10s in some places.

actiongirl1978 · 26/07/2020 07:57

So you might be overweight with the measurements you give above.

Incrediblytired · 26/07/2020 07:58

BMI isn’t wholly accurate but I’m 27 and admit to being overweight- I’m on slimming world though!

Brookers01234 · 26/07/2020 07:58

Im 5’3 (and a half!) also have v big boobs and when at 11 stone Im definitely a bit fat.
Not as ‘huge’ as some posters on here say they would be at that weight and height. Im a large 12/small 14 at 11 stone.
9.7 is probably ideal for me in that Im size 10, feel relatively slim but am able to live my life with some treats and not feeling completely restricted.
I was 8 stone for most of my 20s & size 6/8, I liked my appearance but it was bloody hard work to stay that way and ultimately I had very disordered eating & was miserable.
Currently 12 stone after just having had a baby so am back to the grind 😑

Dreamtopia · 26/07/2020 08:00

That does seem odd then. Are you sure your scales are accurate?

Bitchinkitchen · 26/07/2020 08:00

Yeah, that's definitely overweight, I'm overweight at 5'4 and 10st.

megletthesecond · 26/07/2020 08:01

Vanity sizing has totally messed up clothes sizing. BMI is a better way of measuring your weight I'm afraid.

whenwillthemadnessend · 26/07/2020 08:01

I'm 5.4 and weigh 10.7. I'm bmi one lb into overweight range. I'm trying to get down to bmi 24

I'm dress size 14
Trousers 12 and tops 14 as my boobs are big so you must carry weight very differently from me to be a 10.

Doubleyouexwhyandzed · 26/07/2020 08:02

Same height and I was a little overweight at 11st. However am now 13 at and would LOVE to be a little overweight at 11st do it’s all relative 😂 But, I’d never have been in a size ten when I was 11 stone I was a size 14 so maybe you are muscular or something?

FiveShelties · 26/07/2020 08:03

I am also 5ft4ins and weigh 9st 12lbs, I would definitely feel and look overweight at 11 stones.

beelzeboob · 26/07/2020 08:03

I’m 11 stone at 5 ft 8 and I’m definitely pudgy round the middle. I’m a size 12. There’s no way I could fit into size 10 trousers. A size 10 top I possibly could.

onlynameicouldthinkof · 26/07/2020 08:04

I’m 5’3 and at the start of the year weighed 151lbs (nearly 11 stone), was a big 10/small 12 and was overweight on the nhs bmi calculator. I joined Team RH and have lost 18lbs And now I’m a small 10/8 and in the healthy bmi range.

The bmi is a guide and doesn’t take into account muscle density so really sporty people will show as a higher bmi. The best way to check is calculate your body fat with fat callipers then you’ll know if you are really overweight or if the high bmi is muscle.

MovingtoCardiff · 26/07/2020 08:04

I'd say it was a little overweight to be honest, not huge but a bit on the heavier side.

Racoonworld · 26/07/2020 08:04

At 5ft3 and almost 11 stone you are definitely overweight, sorry! People have lost track of what is a normal weight unfortunately. And I say this as someone who is a similar height and weight to you, although I know I am overweight and am now trying to do something about it, especially as weight is another covid risk factor.

1moreRep · 26/07/2020 08:04

you're probably a size 10 due to frame/ height. You sound a little over weight if you have fat on your stomach, but are you happy?

imho clothes shops vanity size to a ridiculous level but as long as the clothes fit the size doesn't matter

What does matter is are you fit and healthy? are you happy? are you satisfied? if not do something about it and if you are then who gives a shit? Smile

vanillandhoney · 26/07/2020 08:05

Don't rely on clothes sizes for anything - I have clothes that range from an 8 to a 14 and they all fit me.

I'm afraid I would say you're slightly overweight with those measurements, yes. But it's not by much - I imagine you only have to lose half a stone or so to get back into the healthy category Smile

OlympicProcrastinator · 26/07/2020 08:05

11 stone does seem pretty heavy for 5.3. (Sorry you did ask I’m not trying to be unkind) The thing is shops do vanity sizing these days so I don’t think it’s a good measure. However, muscle, big boobs, water retention all play a part so BMI isn’t always accurate either.

I think measurements work best. A woman should keep their waist measurements under 35 inches for health reasons according to health experts / nhs etc.

Wannabegreenfingers · 26/07/2020 08:09

Sorry, but I'm 5ft 11" and weigh 11stone 6lb and a size 12/14. How on earth at 5ft 3" are you a size 10. You must squeeze your self into clothes?!

In answer to your question. Yes you are over weight for your height.

Musmerian · 26/07/2020 08:11

Yes you are. I’m the same height as you and to get to the normal BMI you need to be 9 stone 10. I’m a size 14/16 top half and 10/12 bottom. Not sure how you fit into a 10.

fishonabicycle · 26/07/2020 08:13

Sorry - but yes - 11 stone at 5'3" is definitely overweight. Next, marks and various other places do massive sizes. BMI is a good rough guage for most of the population.

formerbabe · 26/07/2020 08:13

Well you are slightly overweight (like lots of people including me) but they won't be making a documentary about you or anything.

You don't necessarily have to be huge to be overweight. And you don't necessarily have to eat tons to become overweight.

If you're happy, I wouldn't stress.

dontdisturbmenow · 26/07/2020 08:13

I'm 5'2'' weight 8 stone 10 and and just size 10 in those shops, although Next is larger.

Just goes to show we are all different and why waist measurements are a better indicator.

ButterMeCrumpets · 26/07/2020 08:14

I'm 5 foot 3 and just over 10 stone and can squeeze into a size 10 in some clothes and for M&S a size 10 is roomy.

Honestly clothes sizes mean nothing as I know I need to lose weight so being a size 10 is meaningless. I have a wobbly belly and fat back and whilst I am at the top of a 'healthy' BMI I know I still need to lose some fat. BMI is just a guide.

If you are happy with your weight then that is fine but I know at 11 stone I have a belly.
