To think I am not overweight?

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

I’m Almost 6ft and 12 stone but couldn’t fit into a size 10! Seems odd you can when you just a stone lighter but over 6 inches shorter.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 26/07/2020 08:32

Like others say, this is because of height, and that's why even though BMI isn't perfect, it's helpful as it reflects sizs. Someone who is 6 foot might be right in the middle of a healthy BMI at size 12 or even 14, because you scale up sizes overall. I'm shorter than average and around a 22 BMI at size 6-8.

RiverMeadow · 26/07/2020 08:32

I'm 5ft6 and 10st 2lb and I can just about squeeze into a 10??

Hermanfromguesswho · 26/07/2020 08:32

Yep. I’m Exactly same height and weight and I’m a size 12/14 and definitely overweight!

Beautiful3 · 26/07/2020 08:33

Yes that is over weight for your height. Sorry.

SandieCheeks · 26/07/2020 08:33

I'm a little shorter than you and 11 stone is my post-pregnancy, need to lose 2 stone weight.

I'm a size 8 at 9 stone/just under but sizes vary so much depending on store they're almost meaningless. Next is very generous and my size 8 petite jeans are almost falling down whereas I can't get a Zara size 10 over my thighs!

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 08:33

I am not muscular or into weight lifting

OnDisplay · 26/07/2020 08:34

5 foot 3 here. 9st 4lb. Or 59kg. You are 69kg. 10kg heavier than me.

I am fairly muscular.

Size 10.

Apart from Next which is ridiculous and I would probably be a size 6 with them, depending on the cut.

I am BMI 23/34 ish. There are the odd bits of fat on me still (slight lovehandles for example).

You are overweight.

Thingsdogetbetter · 26/07/2020 08:34

Are you size 10 in tailored clothes or those with lots of stretch that at are supposed to be baggy? I'm surprised you're a size 10 on top if you have a big chest? Are you very muscular - bmi doesn't work if you are, you'd need to get your body fat measured instead.

I'm 5.3 and 9 and a half stone. Size 10 on the bottom if the waist band has stretch, but still with muffin top. I'm a C-cup which means a size 12 on the top. If it comes to things like leisure wear, I can fit size 8 but I know it's because I've stretched it the limit. Thank God gyms are open again because when I was weight lifting I was the same weigh but I actually fitted, rather than squeezed into, size 10.

I admit to vanity shopping: any shop where I need a 14 is off my list. In M&S, next, Zara I'm a 10 or 12 so I go there. We can delude ourselves with shop sizes. Some are designed for teenagers with tiny waists and tiny thin arms (Primark for example). Some are designed for women with middle-aged spread (M&S). There is no industry stand for sizes!

Popsicle30 · 26/07/2020 08:34

I am pretty much you OP. I’m 5ft 4 and currently 11stone on the scales. Again it’s round my tummy mainly. I buy size 10 and sometimes a size 8 top (smaller chest) in most shops.

I certainly agree about vanity sizing as I have a very old pair of Next jeans that are a size 12 and sometimes these feel more snug than my size 10 newer purchases.

I do feel overweight at these measurements and want to lose around a stone. It’s when I look at photos that I can also tell.

FreeWillies · 26/07/2020 08:34

You're 5ft 3 and weight 11st. I'm not sure how you could think that isn't overweight?

motherrunner · 26/07/2020 08:35

Like previous posters have said you can’t trust sizing.

A few years back I went shopping for work skirts and in Next I was an 6, H and M a 12 and in Gap a size 0.

BMI and especially was it measurement is a good indication of health.

Kassandra1 · 26/07/2020 08:35

YABU - you know you're overweight, you've put it in your OP?

Clothes sizing has nothing to do with your weight, people carry it differently, broader shoulders etc.

You should measure your waist and aim to lose a little weight

user1471426611 · 26/07/2020 08:35

I'm very similar to you OP. I'm 5ft 4 and 10 stone 7, but I'm a size 8 top and 10 bottom. However I do a lot of exercise including weight training, and have done for over 3 years. I know this is the top end of a healthy bmi but for me it seems to be my perfect weight.

nevergooogle · 26/07/2020 08:36

I am also 5'3" and currently weighing 11st having gained almost a stone since March.

I also wear size 10 on top from most of the places you mentioned but wear a 12 at day french connection or Reiss for example,

Bottoms I need a 12 even when I'm at my preferred weight of 10 stone.

We sound similar.

I think for me at 5'3 the difference between 11st and 10st is very noticeable and yes I feel overweight.

Chickydoo · 26/07/2020 08:36

Post a photo of yourself (you can blank out your face to hide identity)
We can then give you a proper opinion. You might have lots of muscle, so weigh more but don't look big

Bananabread8 · 26/07/2020 08:36

@Dreamtopia

That does seem odd then. Are you sure your scales are accurate?
I was going to type the same thing.
Thingsdogetbetter · 26/07/2020 08:36

Industry standARD.

FizzyPink · 26/07/2020 08:36

I’m 5”5 and 9 stone and a size 8-10 so I’m surprised you’re still getting into a size 10 with an extra 2 stone

Doubleyouexwhyandzed · 26/07/2020 08:37

If you have a 27 inch waist and huge boobs that may be the mystery solved.

Mooballs · 26/07/2020 08:37

Yep overweight I'm afraid. 11 stone sounds a lot for your height. I'm much taller than you and weigh similar. I'm a size 12 so v surprised that you're a 10. It doesn't make sense at all.

Miffycat14 · 26/07/2020 08:37

Yes you are definitely overweight. Same height as me. I try to keep under 10 stone (but it's getting harder!). My size 12 clothes get tight when I get to 10.4 and that's my sign I need to lose weight again.

formerbabe · 26/07/2020 08:37

Are you a weightlifter

Miaow

CountFosco · 26/07/2020 08:37

@Bitchinkitchen

Yeah, that's definitely overweight, I'm overweight at 5'4 and 10st.
No you're not. Healthy weight range for your height: 7st 10lb - 10st 6lb. You have a BMI of 24.
Skyliner001 · 26/07/2020 08:38

I'm 5'3" and 8 stone13. I have an F cup. It all depends what feels right for you. I'd rather be 8.6 😊
