To think I am not overweight?

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

I think your figure is nice in the first photo...you're lucky as your figure is quite in proportion.

Not everyone think the thinner the better.

Different cultures see weight in different ways too.

This is quite interesting.

Op your measurements are exactly the same as mine and I’m 8 stone at 5’2! That’s mad

Starshollowwannabe · 28/07/2020 12:32

5foot3 and 10stone4. Usually a 12/14.

LockdownLoser · 28/07/2020 12:33

Thanks @formerbabe, for me it's more of a health point of view. I was happy enough with how I looked but my mum died when she was a year older than I am now and it makes me want to be as healthy as I can be.

KatherineParr4 · 28/07/2020 12:33

It’s all to do with bones and frame size.

@formerbabe You keep coming along and sniping. Maybe you have an issue with your own weight, but back off a bit?

My comment you picked up on was a compliment. Did you understand that?

The poster said she was overweight and almost obese in photo 1 but because her colleagues were bigger, she didn't see it that way for a while. I agreed. I know someone with that BMI and they look pretty much the same and were warned they were almost obese, from a health point of view.

JinglingHellsBells · 28/07/2020 13:19

Different cultures see weight in different ways too.

Yes maybe but those cultures also have a long history and prevalence of diabetes.

Actually I don't have issues because my self esteem and happiness isn't linked to my weight. I think this thread is interesting because it seems like the opposite is true for many. You've mentioned your mum being strict with her weight...personally I think it would be interesting to see how that attitude has rubbed off on you. You really do come across as quite militant on this issue.

Fressia123 · 28/07/2020 13:47

Jingling you're spot on. My mum kept going on how I was "slim" and had a tiny waist even though for most of my life I was 70kg (at 5ft3 that's heavy). We're Mexican, and guess what? Diabetes is very common place.

Flowers009 · 28/07/2020 13:48

I'm overweight too apparently I do wonder were they get their info from

alittleprivacy · 28/07/2020 13:59

I am very thin and you can see my ribs and collar bones.

That's normal. You are meant to be able to see the ribs and collar bones on the vast majority of healthy weight people.

I don't think you should see ribs at all.
HasaDigaEebowai · 28/07/2020 15:05

I don't think you should see ribs at all.

Confused of course you should see both ribs and collarbones on people of normal healthy weight.

dotdashdashdash · 28/07/2020 15:10

LazyFace

yep, seeing ribs is normal in a person of a healthy weight.

I'm pear shaped so you can see my ribs even when I am slightly overweight.

Seeleyboo · 28/07/2020 15:13

At 5.6 and 11 stone I am a tight 14. How can you be a 10.

dotdashdashdash · 28/07/2020 15:15

I also think it is totally possible for people of different weights but same height to be same size.

During pregnancy and after I had kids my hips grew, and never went back down. I now weigh 2 stone less than pre-pregnancy but cannot fit in pre-pregnancy clothes because of my hips.

TheMarzipanDildo · 28/07/2020 15:18

I do think some people are being right dicks on this thread. Ok, we’ve “lost track of what a healthy weight is” etc, but as I said above, I’m the same exact measurements as you Op and 8 stone (also a size 10). Unless you’re storing it all in your calves or something I think you need new scales. Grin

JonHammIsMyJamm · 28/07/2020 15:22

I really love your username, @TheMarzipanDildo.

alittleprivacy · 28/07/2020 15:47

I don't think you should see ribs at all.

Think what you like but the fact remains that you absolutely should be able to see the ribs and collarbones of the vast majority of healthy weight people. The very fact that people think that being able to see normal, average parts of a healthy body is some sort of thin extreme just goes to show how very, very messed up our perceptions of what's healthy has become.

NameChange84 · 28/07/2020 15:50

As I’ve previously said, I’m not far off the NHS obese category (BMI 29
but size 12, thank you vanity sizing Angry) and my ribs and collarbone are very visible despite also clearly being plump/chubby.
Surely you’d have to be morbidly obese to not have a visible collarbone or ribs?

fellrunner85 · 28/07/2020 15:52

This. With bells on. Genuinely shocked that someone would think seeing ribs and collarbones means someone is underweight. Although it does help to make sense of all these posts saying "I look ill and gaunt with a BMI of less than 25."
