Why does MN hate smokers so much?

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:07

Not all of MN of course but I’ve seen a lot of negativity about it. I understand not liking smoking yourself because of the health issues, I’m a smoker after giving up for nearly a year and I was stupid to start again but it’s a nasty addiction to kick. I only smoke outside, in designated smoking areas, and never around people who are eating/close to other people. I also don’t smoke in places like parks or walking through town. It is either in my garden or in a designated spot. Would a smoker like that bother you, or is it people who don’t have any courtesy, or do you just not like smokers in general?

Not being aggressive at all, just very interested.

Would also like to know if anyone on here smokes themselves?

I don’t like it when they smoke around me, regardless if I’m eating or not, they smell of stale smoke even if they don’t realise it and I don’t think it sets a very good example to children if done in public.

NYMM · 25/07/2020 16:10

Because it stinks?

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:10

That’s fair enough!

I dislike it as it stinks, spreads, so neighbours smoking in their gardens makes my house smell. It kills you. It kills people near you. It is a waste of money.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/07/2020 16:11

And my thoughts extend to others with antisocial habits too, not just smokers. Swearing loudly for example.

mccavitythethird · 25/07/2020 16:11

Because it's a filthy habit which makes their clothes, hair and breath smell and is bad for my health and my children's health if you smoke near me. I don't have any friends who smoke and wouldn't have anybody in my house or car who smoked.

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:13

Agree it is a filthy habit and I wish I had continued not to. Gave in during a stressful situation and fell down the rabbit hole. I smoke right at the end of my garden not near any of the houses and have asked my neighbours if that is okay/if they can smell it and they have said no, if they did have an issue I would go somewhere else.

FenellaMaxwell · 25/07/2020 16:14

Because it absolutely stinks. Smokers are so used to it I don’t think they realise how grim it is for people near them. Not just when you are smoking - if you are a heavy smoker or have just smoked one before sitting next to someone on the bus or queuing next to them in a shop, it is actively unpleasant to be near a smoker. That and it’s dangerous and sets a shitty example to kids to see people smoking.

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 25/07/2020 16:14

Because it stinks and shows that they're just a little bit stupid, to be honest.

Chocoholic12 · 25/07/2020 16:14

I don't care if people smoke, though would prefer It if they didn't near me as it stinks. The smell lingers on them aswell. Some of my clients who smoke bring me paperwork stinking of fags it's really nasty. I'm an ex smoker i smoked for 14 years and gave up 7 months ago 😊 the fact I've realised how much it stinks is helping me not start again 😂

Kreacheriscleaning · 25/07/2020 16:15

Because the vast majority are not considerate and even the ones that are don't seem to realise how far the smell/smoke spreads.
I say this as an ex smoker who regularly reminds still smoking dh to be more considerate.

Smokers around doors especially annoy me. I shouldn't have to walk my child through a cloud to get I to the supermarket.
Also, so many don't seem to think of chucking a cigarette butt as littering and will happily chuck them.

Obviously not all smokers are like that but enough for it to be generally selfish and anti-social.

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:15

I don’t think that is a very fair comment to make @EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling, a lot of people with mental health issues smoke to alleviate stress. Do you have the same attitude towards drinking alcohol?

OP posts:
Bitchinkitchen · 25/07/2020 16:16

Because even if you're not actively smoking, you still stink.

I also (preparing for flogging here) think smokers tend to be stupid, selfish, wasteful people.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/07/2020 16:16

I'm an occasional smoker: usually if someone or something has upset me. Or perhaps I'm safe to say: was. I posted a thread on here a few weeks ago, saying that I wanted to stop. I haven't smoked since and am probably less likely to do so now that the gym is open. I can vent my frustrations there Smile

Other people smoking around me doesn't bother me at all.

howfarwevecome · 25/07/2020 16:17

It's disgusting.

Clothing, jackets, hair, breath, car seats ... everything smells of it when you smoke. There's really no way to hide it. And it ages facial skin prematurely.

And it's awful seeing cigarette butts everywhere; they don't break down. And I agree it's a terrible example for children. We've known for many decades how bad they are for people's health, and yet people still take it up.

I wish you luck in trying to quit again, OP.

Merryoldgoat · 25/07/2020 16:17

It smells disgusting and smokers are oblivious to how it hangs on them and their clothes.

I’m an ex smoker and has zero idea how awful it was.

Toilenstripes · 25/07/2020 16:20

I’m a social smoker, only when I drink. Basically in my garden and/or the pub beer garden. I don’t care if someone thinks I stink.

AgeLikeWine · 25/07/2020 16:21

I’m an ex-smoker, and I have no problem with other people smoking. Their money, their health, their choice.

What I do object to, strongly, is being forced to inhale their disgusting toxic carcinogenic smoke. Smoking should be banned in pub gardens, outside restaurants, at bus stops, outside workplaces and anywhere else that non-smokers could be forced to inhale smoke.

DolphinandDuck · 25/07/2020 16:21

I hate everything about smoking. I just cant understand why people do it. In my mind it makes them look less intelligent and a bit common. It makes me feel sick just to think about it. It stinks to high heaven, why would people want to suck that into their lungs and then breath it out over themselves and everyone. Also why on earth do they think chewing a chewy after magically gets rid of the smell. I could always tell a colleague had gone outside for a smoke when she returned, the smell followed her no matter what she did.

katy1213 · 25/07/2020 16:21

Filthy habit but it's so socially unacceptable now that I don't actually know anyone who smokes any more.

katy1213 · 25/07/2020 16:23

@dolphinandduck

Exactly - less intelligent and a bit common!

foxtiger · 25/07/2020 16:24

I don't smoke but I don't hate smokers and wish they were allowed to smoke in slightly more places. It does feel a bit unfair given that it is an addiction.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/07/2020 16:24

Because we are scum of the earth to some MN.

PalmTreesPurple · 25/07/2020 16:25

I think it’s sad that people associate smoking with intelligence, and know that there are many studies regarding smoking and IQ which in fact supports these opinions. I don’t think I’m a stupid person, even though I know the habit is stupid, if that makes sense. I hate myself for it but can’t seem to kick it, though I know I will try again when I am ready - lockdown has really exasperated it.

OP posts:
cologne4711 · 25/07/2020 16:27

I hate smoking because it's a ridiculously stupid and completely avoidable thing to do.

It's expensive, too.

It makes your breath stink.

Your skin goes yellow and wrinkly and you look 20 years older than you are.

And if you're not very fortunate you'll die of lung or some other cancer.

Yes I've really sold it to myself as a past-time!

And vaping is just more of the same.
