To think mask wearing is going to wear thin before long ?

I’ve already noticed people starting to flag in Scotland. In Tesco today I was bored shitless doing the weekly shop and counting 20 people with masks on Chins and under noses. Kids using them as hankies 🤢. I heard also the government might be advising glove wearing. I imagine this is going to start to become very impractical for some people and they’ll just not bother / or bother going out. My DH is exempt from mask wearing and he went out without today expecting some comments but not a peep from anyone! Also the one way aisles have been removed too meaning more folk all crammed in to a small space not socially distant. I overheard a couple saying “ what’s the point wearing masks when we are so close anyway?”

If you’re referring to the UK the word used for the inhabitants is British, not English,

I haven't seen the same amount of whining and whingeing and general unpleasantness coming from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Catspaw123 · 25/07/2020 17:36

Horrible aren't they literally feel stifled by them. And they make me touch my face more as constantly pulling at it

butterpuffed · 25/07/2020 17:36

@damnthatanxiety

What a load of freaking entitled, moaning twats. God forbid they had to actually endure anything genuinely traumatic. It's a freaking mask. Grow up. And people think the young are entitled snowflakes.
Totally agree .
Aragog · 25/07/2020 17:36

99% of people dont wear them properly,

Really? I'm not seeing that here or when I was home in England last week. Pretty much Everyone seems to be perfectly capable of having their mask over their nose and under their chin, using elastics or ties to keep them on when they are on public transport or inside shops, etc. When outside I see people with them round their neck, under their chin or taken off entirely - but that's the norm.

We remove ours when not needed. I have a cloth pounce inside my bag to pop it into. A quick spray of anti bac and remove (or put on) using the elastics. They're all double or triple layered too so even if we touch the nose bit (to shape the wire) and the chin to ensure covered properly it's not really an issue.

I'm really not seeing 99% of people incapable of wearing a mask covering their nose and chin.

luckylavender · 25/07/2020 17:37

So fed up of people moaning about them. Unless you're exempt, just get on with it. Any little thing we can do is worth it and health care workers have to put up with so much worse. They don't moan nearly as much in SE Asia or in France, Spain or Italy.

IAintentDead · 25/07/2020 17:37

Wear a mask, don't wear a mask (you have your own reason) it's no one else's business.

Government guidelines
Some people may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This could be in the form of an exemption card, badge or even a home-made sign.

This is a personal choice and is not necessary in law.

Those who have an age, health or disability reason for not wearing a face covering should not be routinely asked to give any written evidence of this. Written evidence includes exemption cards.

And when bullies think they know better they can be very, very unpleasant:

theguardian.com/society/2020/jul/24/deafblind-woman-and-sister-verbally-abused-for-lifting-mask-on-train

And if you are bullying online you are still a nasty bully.

Jojobar · 25/07/2020 17:37

@SmileyClare I rarely visit my GP (last time I think was 2017), I'm not on any prescription medication. I have a chest freezer full of food so if my internet did go down for days - unlikely - I'd be fine.

As I said if I absolutely HAVE to go to a shop I'll use a scarf or snood that I already have. But I'm going to avoid shops while this face covering rule is in force.

Chaotic45 · 25/07/2020 17:39

@Rosesarere I agree that there are a myriad of varied reasons as to why someone should not wear a mask.

However, if the rest is us wear a mask this will still represent a minority of people- and the overall effect of the majority of is wearing one has to be a positive thing.

Also, all the panic stricken talking can serve to make those anxious about wearing masks feel even more so. There may be some people who given time, patience and encouragement can learn to wear one- but whilst so many people are acting hysterically this won't happen!

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 25/07/2020 17:40

There isn’t a need for many many exemptions they there is a need for some

Majority on here simply don’t like wearing one. No one does! I don’t think oh great yay get to wear a mask today how exciting and I really don’t like my life restricted in the way it has been this year but we are in the middle of a pandemic that has had a bigger impact across the world than any other in history

Ebay sell cotton masks that I have found comfortable and fitting isn’t too bad for around £5

JRUIN · 25/07/2020 17:41

What a load of freaking entitled, moaning twats. God forbid they had to actually endure anything genuinely traumatic. It's a freaking mask. Grow up. And people think the young are entitled snowflakes.

I've experienced a lot of trauma in my lifetime. I'm still allowed a little moan about about having to wear a mask on a thread about having to wear a mask though. So you can stick your rude name calling right up your self righteous arse Hmm

Twillow · 25/07/2020 17:41

@LoafingLiz you can get ones with 1 way vents in which are ok

But they are pointless in that they expel your breath completely unfiltered. The idea of wearing a mask is to protect others as well as yourself.

Devlesko · 25/07/2020 17:41

I'm just shopping online, they are suffocating and horrible things.

Chaotic45 · 25/07/2020 17:42

Sorry, my last post was in response to @Freddofrogshop not @Rosesarere.

corythatwas · 25/07/2020 17:43

My 20yo has managed fine wearing them at work since the start of the pandemic and he works in a very hot environment.

People in other countries - including some very hot and humid ones- manage.

Children on the cancer ward manage.

It doesn't take incredibly strong will not to keep fiddling with your face- it's the kind of thing junior restaurant staff have drilled into them from day one.

Of course there will need to be exemptions. There are exemptions for wearing seatbelts. There are exemptions for wearing hard hats on building sites.

But what is NOT needed is for everybody to act as of they were let off the hook by exemptions that don't apply to them.

BeelzebubGoesToBenidorm · 25/07/2020 17:44

I bought contact lenses just so I could wear a mask a bit more comfortably, as my glasses steaming up every other second got on my tits massively.

I found a washable cotton mask a LOT more bearable than the stretchy synthetic ones. I hate wearing them as much as the next person, and the new guidelines stating where we should and don't need to wear masks are as garbled and senseless as ever, but I'm just trying to find comfortable ones and get on with it.

Timekeeper1 · 25/07/2020 17:47

I found getting used to wearing glasses far, far harder than getting used to a mask. Even now having something sitting on my nose feels heavy and irritating. We quickly get used to things. Some people just want to be different and look for an argument, make a fuss for the sake of it.

Defenbaker · 25/07/2020 17:47

To all the people saying they find masks uncomfortable or annoying, I'd recommend you take a look around at the different options. There are lots of different masks for sale now, and lots of video tutorials on YouTube showing how to make your own masks, so it's a case of trying different shapes and styles to find the mask that is the best fit for you.

The blue and white one-use masks are very light, but I find they make my face sweat a lot and because they are semi-plasticised there is no way for it to be absorbed or evaporate. Also, there is a cost - in terms of money and the environment. Fabric masks are a bit fiddly to make but you can tailor the size and shape to suit your face, and you can choose how many layers of fabric to use. Apparently 3 layers is best, but can be hard to tolerate due to heat. 1 layer is light but probably not very effective. So, for me, 2 layers is my choice. I've used old cotton pillowcases and clothes for the fabric, and for some I've used cords/shoe laces as ties, while for others I've used 6mm elastic and made ear loops. Today I've been making some masks that are sort of bowl shaped, so they don't sit so tight around the nose area. I haven't worn them yet but am hoping they give a little more breathing space so I don't get as hot. I will report back once I've found which mask is my best choice.

The mask thing is a bit of a drag, but I'm totally on board with wearing them in shops etc, because anything that helps to reduce transmission while we wait for the virus is a valuable tool, IMO. I'm not going to challenge others for not wearing them, or get worked up if people are careless in the way they handle/fiddle with them while out, but I hope that most people will make the effort.

PablosHoney · 25/07/2020 17:48

Loads of people are getting those mask exempt lanyards without a real reason. I don’t like wearing it, it feels unnatural and I feel like I look weird! but wear it I will. I do think people should be able to say it’s shit, because it is, the whole damn situation is shit.

VenusTiger · 25/07/2020 17:50

The shaming must stop, whether it's for wearing one, or for presuming someone should be wearing one when they're exempt and social distancing is 1m+ if people are still so fearful, stay at home and shop when it's a quieter period, or do online shop. People are trying their best, but it's just not good enough for some ppl.

Hercwasonaroll · 25/07/2020 17:52

You can't shop for everything online. Plenty of times I need to visit an actual shop!

This will kill little touristy shops that rely on passing trade. No one is going to walk in on a whim now. If you forget your mask, you can't go in either.

Our local butcher doesn't give a toss, walked in with it, said I was finding it irritating and he replied "oh just say you have a medical exception" and winked. He'll get more custom off me!!

DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 17:52

Remember the MN of this time last year and threads bitching others out for using disposable single use anything? Alas, we've come full circle, COVID OMG! Throw away masks and gloves all the way, spraying everything with toxic chemicals that get in the water, who cares? Amazing.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 25/07/2020 17:54

The only bonus is if I have forgotten to wax my moustache no one can tell!

Lovewithalampost · 25/07/2020 17:56

You do get used to them. I’ve been wearing one since March and it was only a month ago I said to DH it’s actually ok. I don’t feel the need to tear it off my face. It does still make my glasses steam up though but you do adjust. For my DH it was actually today he came out of the shop and said it’s fine and he’s ok with it now. But we have both been wearing them for months.

Anyone who is struggling honestly just persevere. At the start I actually ran out of a shop I was in as I thought I was going to find and couldn’t breathe so I did properly struggle too.

Hopefully everyone perseveres with them and we can go back to normal quicker. I don’t want to see them become part of our culture like in Asia.

HarlinRay · 25/07/2020 17:58

There will always be people who can’t wear them (a tiny minority) and a load of boring moaners (most of whom seem to post about it on MN). That’s fine, the moaners look like the idiots they are while most people get on with doing what’s needed. If the majority of people wear masks and do the best they can, then it will help. It’s not about 100% perfect compliance- it’s about reaching critical mass.

HavelockVetinari · 25/07/2020 17:58

Agreed. I was on a plane yesterday, and the vast majority of passengers wore their masks under their nose or dangling from their chin after about 10 mins into the flight.

They're awfully hot, and wearing mine for 7 hours yesterday has given me zits around my mouth (never had them before).

Still, I will continue to wear one as long as necessary, it's important to protect others and set an example.
