To think it is appalling Asda are using disabled spaces?

For their click and collect orders?

Our Asda has a hut in the middle of the carpark. During lockdown understandably this became busy and was blocking the flow of traffic so they moved click and collect to the side of the store. All fine.

Went to get my order for the first time ina few weeks and realise they have now moved it to the other side of the carpark.. using the disabled bays as the collection point.

Yes, they have other disabled bays, but as I understood it they needed a certain amount or they wouldnt have been originally installed? When questioned, they said it was because they are only using one of the entrances, "hardly anyone " was using them. Surely that is not the point? They are there for a reason! And the queues to the entrance they are using are quite often up to these ones anyway so the person would have to walk further to reach the end of the queue!

@Staplemaple

It's weird isn't it *@Willow2017*. It makes sense that some are, just like any other segment of the population. I do think many people seem to think of BB holders as all being the same, when there's a huge breadth of people who are eligible, for a variety of ailments.
Exactly. Someone who lost a limb from an accident and is fully independent is not the same as someone with complex medical issues yet they are all lumped together on here. Everyone is different just the same as non Bb holders are.

@Livelovebehappy

I would guess a lot of disabled people will be shielding, so they may have done random daily checks and noticed the majority of the disabled spots were not being utilised. The disabled get first options on delivery, and they are currently still all booked up every week, so also assume most disabled people are getting their shopping delivered.
Oh well I must have really fucked up then. Because I’m disabled, didn’t get priority slots and was waking up all hours to get slots in the beginning. I signed up with every delivery company going when I failed night after night to get Tesco slots and paid for delivery savers with Morrison’s and Ocado just to get deliveries. Perhaps you could tell me what I did wrong as I obviously wasted time, depleted my very limited energy and money to maintain delivery service. Hmm
Mummyoflittledragon · 25/07/2020 18:13

@FelicisNox

YABU.

They are not using all the spaces just some of them and they are a better judge of how these spaces are utilised than you are.

Whilst disabled parking spaces are a requirement there are no set amount required. (Is my understanding)

You need a hobby.

Another dumb comment having not rtft

You need to look up the definition of empathy.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 18:23

Our Asda is using disabled bays as the queuing system.

I also was very Shock

There was normal spaces behind the shelter where the queue starts they could have used.

So I've shopped in supermarkets where the disabled bays are still available.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 18:26

And yes to accessibility not always being distance. My ds has hereditary spastic paraplegia. He can walk fairly well - if we can park somewhere with a space wide enough for him to actually be able to get out of the car Grin

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 18:30

And nearly all local supermarkets here have non queuing for disabled customers. Most have 'wait in foyer for queue time' but some just let you in.

Except for Asda who have got rid of bays and expect you to queue. But like I said - I voted with my feet.

There are 4 blue badge holders in my close family. Only one of them was required to shield. Two others had to be more careful but could go out. One had no higher risk than anyone else his age.
Sorberret · 25/07/2020 18:39

I completely agree op, this really gets me cross but depressingly disabled people are often just an after thought.

clareken260 · 25/07/2020 18:42

Went to Asda this morning. All of the directional signs have gone, as "everyone" was wearing a mask! Social distancing straight out the window.

Sorberret · 25/07/2020 18:43

Livelovebehappy
Disability isn't one condition you know! Not every disabled person is required to shield.

@mlhs4198

There's always far to many disabled bays, and most of the people who use them don't need too and are doing so without a permit. I'd say get over it.
What so because a minority abuse it those who require it to get out and about should go without?

What a horribly disablist attitude. I'd be embarrassed to hold that view.

Until they can be tucked away safe from sight. Then (mush as there are no gays in Russia) the UK can proudly proclaim there are no disabled people in the UK. There can't be - after all, surely we'd see them ?

And yet if you read the thread plenty of people who need those spaces can’t park in them because they are full.

People abusing the spaces is not an excuse to get rid of the spaces or reduce the number. It simply shows it needs to be policed (by the stores/officials not by random know it all’s) better.

mlhs4198 · 25/07/2020 19:09

@itsgettingweird Never said they should go without. Of course, the selfish people who use them wrongly should not be doing so but then that's down to the store to enforce. Regardless I was saying that even when people don't use them legitimately there still always seems to be plenty of BB spaces left around my local shops...

Tricky one but depends on the store and whether it finds its disabled bays are always full or usually empty. Two huge supermarkets near me have loads of disabled bays, and it seems they overestimated how many they would need, as no matter the time of day they are always at least ten empty disabled bays while the rest of the carpark fills up. If they’re not being used then it makes sense to redesignate them.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 19:13

But this isn't about the quantity being too high.

This is about in some stores all the spaces in front of the shop being out do action. ALL. This disadvantages those who need disabled bay and close to shops.

For my ds we can use a disabled bay the other side of a car park. It doesn't impact him negatively.

Merryweather80 · 25/07/2020 19:45

It’s always the disabled spaces that are used if needed for click and collect, garden centre type huts, for a charity themed something or other that takes up space, announcement -disco point for Christmas lights etc. It’s as though disabled people shouldn’t attend these events to need the spaces or use amenities like click and collect and need a parking place.

It’s really difficult to get a disabled space anywhere usually, plus facilities to make our life easier are few and far between where I live.

Merryweather80 · 25/07/2020 19:51

@Mummyoflittledragon I didn’t get a shielded delivery slot with any supermarket either. Without the shielded food delivery box we would have starved.

Gilead · 25/07/2020 20:09

There is nothing you can say to justify this nonsense, I don’t care if you think there are too many because your local shops seem to have them when you’re out and about. Are you watching daily?

If disabled people don’t matter, keep quiet about it, we get enough shit without this ableist bollocks. And that goes for all the ableist posters of shite on this thread. So tired of being marginalised by government, companies, career opportunities, peer group and stupid people inwilling to share their space fairly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/07/2020 20:19

@Merryweather80
I wasn’t entitled to one. Didn’t mean to imply I did. I was responding to the comment the all disabled people get priority delivery slots. Those boxes were pitiful apparently- the contents were posted on Mumsnet at the time. Hopefully this is behind you.

@itsgettingweird
Exactly. So many able bodied people telling us we are fine because spaces are available with no regard or understanding for our diverse needs. I drive to the closest space available and only go when I don’t think I’m at big risk of collapsing in the shop. It’s happened several times. I understand my energy levels better these days. But needing more surgery now it’s just consistently really low. If my dd queues for me I can just about manage a small shop on a good day - if needs must.

Joeblack066 · 25/07/2020 22:12

@Alabamawhirly1

They've done this at loads of shops, mostly to put the que in. The other issue is if you park in the disabled, you're close to the entrance but not the back of the que. Not all shops let you skip the que with a bb.

There has been loads of acsessability thrown out of the window for the apparently more important covid measures.

Masking, meaning hearing impaired can't understand people.
Blocking disabled parking.
Forcing people to walk long routes round centres.
Shutting toilets.
Narrowing walkways with signs and fencing.

I went into shoppinh centre loos today and the cubical that is larger for people with children, buggies wheelchairs or just need a bit extra space was locked - as per the rediculouse and nonsensical measure of shutting every other cubical. Because apparently covid can jump through wooden participants but not cotton masks.

Couldn’t agree more.
LouMumsnet · 25/07/2020 22:29

Evening everyone.

We just wanted to let you know that we've been through and removed any disablist posts that we felt broke our Talk Guidelines.

Do take a look at our This Is My Child Campaign especially the Myths about Special needs and consider the challenges many parents of children with disabilities, or who have disabilities themselves, face on a daily basis.

Mumsnet exists to make parent's lives easier and if there's one thing we could all do with, especially right now, it's some understanding and moral support.

Gilead · 25/07/2020 22:43

Thank you LouMumsnet
