To think it is appalling Asda are using disabled spaces?

For their click and collect orders?

Our Asda has a hut in the middle of the carpark. During lockdown understandably this became busy and was blocking the flow of traffic so they moved click and collect to the side of the store. All fine.

Went to get my order for the first time ina few weeks and realise they have now moved it to the other side of the carpark.. using the disabled bays as the collection point.

Yes, they have other disabled bays, but as I understood it they needed a certain amount or they wouldnt have been originally installed? When questioned, they said it was because they are only using one of the entrances, "hardly anyone " was using them. Surely that is not the point? They are there for a reason! And the queues to the entrance they are using are quite often up to these ones anyway so the person would have to walk further to reach the end of the queue!

Legally the bb holder also has to get out of the car to be able to use the bb space. The reason being if the disabled person simply stays inside the car, the able bodied person is the only mobile person and can use a regular space.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/07/2020 09:42

Staplemate
I agree they are very useful. I used them with dd / before I applied for my BB. ASD is now covered in the BB scheme.

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 09:44

@Sirzy

P and C spaces are a marketing ploy that makes a small minority of parents think they can’t do without. Yet they manage at all the places that don’t have them.

Disabled parking is the difference between someone being able to get out of the house and not.

The two are in no way comparable

Totally agree.

One of the things I put on the BB application for my ds was that we always used P and C spaces when we needed extra room. That at nearly 16 these aren't available now. They are reserved for under 5's or children in car seats.

I also stated it was emotionally draining being judged continuously.

But I would use a P and C space with the badge if I needed to! I'm sure that'll piss off parents who think they are more entitled.

The most ironic thing to me is that when my ds was a baby's we didn't have P and C spaces. He also had much more mobility as his condition is degenerative.

We both survived Grin

@Mummyoflittledragon
.... just checked and you're right. I need to re read the bloody guidelines!

Sirzy · 26/07/2020 10:11

So true. DS is only 10 so we get it both ways, we have had abuse that he is too older to be using a P and C space (as I putting his wheelchair up!) and we have had abuse for using disabled spaces on days his chair isn’t needed because we are young so can’t possibly have a blue badge, it’s obviously stolen Hmm

lilylion · 26/07/2020 10:18

@Livelovebehappy

I would guess a lot of disabled people will be shielding, so they may have done random daily checks and noticed the majority of the disabled spots were not being utilised. The disabled get first options on delivery, and they are currently still all booked up every week, so also assume most disabled people are getting their shopping delivered.
Hahahahaha

Oh, you were serious.

No, ‘the disabled’ do not get first options on delivery.

SimplySteveRedux · 26/07/2020 10:23

@ButtWormHole

I think you’re being a bit precious if I’m being honest.
You've clearly never required the usage of a disabled bay.

Yep. My ds gets out the car like a bouncing bunny. Because his condition means walking causes issues. So before he's walked - he's fine.

But as my dad says. He's wrecked afterwards!

If only people knew the forms we have to complete to get DLA and a BB. I literally had council question me about why I decided to apply now as surely my ds was born with his disability Shock

A simple google would have informed them its degenerative. Instead I had to provide all this, explain about p and C spaces and provide reams of medical evidence.

DGRossetti · 26/07/2020 10:40

The level of BB abuse is still sickening. (We return to my suggestion that any abuse of a facility provided under the 2010 EA - and that should include BBs - should be considered a criminal offence of a hate crime).

Personally I'd be happy if the use of a BB was on condition that it has to be shown (with the photograph of the person it's for, which is on the other side) whenever it's asked for by an official.

True Story. The new QE2 hospital in Birmingham, has a 4-storery car park with an entire floor (plus more) devoted to BB parking. It used to operate a policy whereby BB parking was free - just wave your badge at the exit camera. Even with a whole floor there were rarely any spaces by 10am.

Then, last year - without warning - they changed it so that you had to go to the attendant, show your BB with the holder to get your ticket logged. The next day 70% of the spaces were free all day. DW chatted with the attendant and he said a lot of people had come unstuck as they were clearly abusing someone elses badge.

Then there was the lawyer who was estimated to have saved £40,000 by abusing his aunts badge in the city centre for years.

If you knew me in real life, (I hope) you'd put me down as relatively live and let live, happy go lucky etc. And I am. Right up until it comes to fucking lowlife scumbag ignorant cunty types who are quite happy to add to the misery that disabled folk already suffer every waking (and sometimes sleeping) second in order to make their already privileged lives that tiny bit more privileged. Fuck them, and fuck the society that puts up with them.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/07/2020 10:45

query it with the store
Maybe the disabled spaces were underused (possibly higher % of disabled drivers now having deliveries?)
Were there other disabled spaces still available?

Sirzy · 26/07/2020 10:50

Alder Hey have a full row of about 15 disabled spaces on each floor of the 6 storey car park. Getting a space in them can be a nightmare, last time we were there we walked past 12 cars in disabled bays and only 3 where displaying a badge.

DGRossetti · 26/07/2020 11:08

Just to add fuel to the fire, I've seen a couple of very clever car park layouts that cost nothing but which pretty much ensured there was no BB abuse. So (a) it can be done for free and (b) the fact it isn't speaks volumes about where the disabled come on modern Britain pecking order.

winniestone37 · 26/07/2020 11:21

I have a disabled son and am a Carer - if there are other spaces I’m not worried about this.

Tessabelle1 · 26/07/2020 12:44

I've never been to a supermarket with my care clients and not found a disabled space, there always seems to be plenty spare. I have however been to the supermarket plenty of times with my children and not got a parent and child space, yet in our Tesco, guess where people are currently queuing?

DGRossetti · 26/07/2020 13:24

I think I should ask MNHQ to intervene (again) and rename this thread "It's all about me ..."

Jeeperscreepers69 · 26/07/2020 18:01

Easy to say if you aren't disabled.

Disabled people are entitled to get out and about as much as non disabled. Entitled to enjoy the summer safely as Boris says as much as the next person.

It does matter.

I’m curious to know what you mean @DGRossetti , but I’m thinking you can’t tell us without giving the CFs ideas?

No secret - you just curate the layout of the car park so that while the BB spaces are near the entrance, they are actually the last ( not the first) you get too.

It takes a special kind of bellend to drive past 200 free spaces before parking their arse in a BB space they aren't entitled to. Which demonstrates that most BB space abuse is casual entitled laziness.

Which somehow makes it worse.

That said, the layout at Touchwood in Solihull is bonkers. There is a whole floor of disabled parking, but the only way to access it, is to queue with the traffic for all the other levels. We did it once at Xmas. Queued for 30 minutes to discover the BB floor was empty, despite the rest of the car park being full so it was a one-in one-out at the barrier.

Simplest solution was simply not to go to Touchwood. Nothing that special there anyway.

I see. Thanks.

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 27/07/2020 09:34

Is this the Stevenage store by any chance? If not, they’ve done exactly the same thing there and I, too, was shocked to see they’ve done this.

That’s the layout at our local Asda where we can always park so it works there.

The only spaces that get abused there tend to be the ones near the cash point. Apparently it’s fine to park there if your just nipping to the cash point Hmm

Yabu. Supermarkets have way in excess of the minimum number of disabled spaces required by law. Many disabled will not be accessing shops and actually reliant on deliveries of click and collect, and this will conti ue after shielding is paused.
