To think this man is disturbed

I had a conversation with a neighbour today. He lives alone and is late 40s-ish.

He had just been to the gym and started complaining about their showers being closed. Then he said, 'there is worse to come, you know.'

He started to talk about the government forcing people to wear masks, and about C19 being a myth, with the death rates made up by govts . He got quite agitated.

He mentioned a movement called the 'Illuminati' and said they were trying to take over the world (?) About Bill Gates and Elon Musk and other famous men being part of a paedophile ring, which also includes Chinese and BLM figures, which Trump has rumbled and is trying to investigate. About the new telecommunications satellites and 5G masts spying on people . And then some rant about MMR giving kids autism. I just nodded my head, I wasn't going to start arguing.

I know that conspiracy theories are rife online right now, but surely beliefs like this are excessive? I think this man is disturbed and needs to be assessed or evaluated. He is separated and single, as far as I know, but has two children who sometimes come to stay but what is his mental state, really? When does conspiracy theorism shade into paranoia?

I know his mum and dad and sister to see (they all live locally), but it would be a difficult conversation!

Don’t gyms reopen on Saturday?

PumpkinP · 23/07/2020 23:28

My sister believes all of that, literally everything you said word for word, a lot of her friends do as well.

roxfox · 23/07/2020 23:28

He listed every single one?!

Shouldbedoing · 23/07/2020 23:28

I wouldn't worry too much about him. As a single man he has all the time in the world to watch conspiracy theory videos. They can be very convincing too - my ex was a 9/11 conspiracy theorist. Unfortunately, the Internet is an excellent tool for propagating bullshit.

EL8888 · 23/07/2020 23:29

In my professional opinion he is bat shit

PumpkinP · 23/07/2020 23:29

I’m not sure what you want to be done about him though? He’s allowed to think what he likes, like I said a lot of people believe conspiracy theories

Giraffey1 · 23/07/2020 23:30

Sadly, there’s a lot of it about. Just ignore him.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 23/07/2020 23:30

As a single man he has all the time in the world to watch conspiracy theory videos.

Fucking hell.

Chouxalacreme · 23/07/2020 23:32

Ask him if Michelle Obama is a man ...

Smallsteps88 · 23/07/2020 23:32

He forgot chemtrails.

Sisterwives · 23/07/2020 23:33

Those are very, very common beliefs (incorrect ones). There are dozens of websites, forums and YT channels spreading and discussing this stuff.

Obviouspretzel · 23/07/2020 23:33

Why would he need to be assessed ? And why would you listen to him go on about this for what seems like ages given the number of subjects he managed to cover?

Loads of people like this about. Just keep a wide berth and go on with your life.

Smallsteps88 · 23/07/2020 23:33

As a single man he has all the time in the world to watch conspiracy theory videos.

Because your life is empty if you have no partner? Hmm

Shouldbedoing · 23/07/2020 23:34

Or the moonlandings

msbevvy · 23/07/2020 23:36

I have just watched a very worrying report about this on Newsnight

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-53507579/qanon-coronavirus-and-the-conspiracy-cult

PlanDeRaccordement · 23/07/2020 23:36

3 of the 5 things he mentioned have a grain of truth to them, so he’s not irrational.

Tsubasa1 · 23/07/2020 23:37

Didn't he mention how the Earth is actually flat? Grin

Shouldbedoing · 23/07/2020 23:37

Plenty of time for viewing because he has no demands on him - we're in lockdown. My reply was also meant to be lighthearted to help the OP not worry.

Shouldbedoing · 23/07/2020 23:39

Or Bill Gates injecting us with microchips through his vaccination programme.

Shouldbedoing · 23/07/2020 23:40

Hopefully his visiting kids have a more sensible parent

jackdawdawn · 23/07/2020 23:51

Are people online really making that stuff up about Gates and Musk?

Yes, I do think he is batshit, but he is meant to be responsible for the welfare of kids. Personally I don't hold out much hope for the poor kids if that is their dad.I'm just trying to think of my mum and dad coming out with something similar and imagining what my childhood would have been like.

He's entitled to think whatever he wants to. Unless he displays harmful behaviour towards his children, mind your own business.

Happymama24 · 23/07/2020 23:55

But the earth is flat, no?

PumpkinP · 23/07/2020 23:55

So what do you think should happen?
