Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

alwayslosing - she was considered an exception. All she needed to do was say the magic words, “I will put my mask back on when I’m feeling better” and she was magically left alone - she admits that in her opening post!

@KarenKarendson, you say that tourism, pubs and restaurants, blah blah, are all open for business, and that is true - for the UK.

It doesn't mean that public health authorities around the world agree that tourism, pubs, or whatever, should be up and running, and my statement referred to public health authorities 'around the world', not the British public health authorities (who got things so badly wrong - or maybe they gave sound advice but were ignored by the British government who got things horribly wrong in its approach to covid).

In other words, it's only the completely misguided British authorities which say you can go back to business as usual.

Meanwhile the airline that the OP flew is operating on the assumption that things are far from normal. Your belief that the world needs to operate according to terrible British government advice should be reconsidered.

Just something worth considering for the future- get some travel sickness pills from the pharmacy. I take them before flying, even though I'm not sure I suffer from it anymore. It's a safety net for me, that keeps me calm and means I don't have to worry about it.

alwayslosing · 25/07/2020 09:35

@Walkaround she firmly said that! So the cabin crew had no choice really than to leave her alone.
Weren't her tears enough? Obviously she was distressed and with two young children? She obviously cared about wearing a mask and yet they still harassed her completely disregarding her situation.

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/07/2020 09:37

And Spain, and France, and Italy, and Greece... and many other countries that rely on tourism to feed their families.

Walkaround · 25/07/2020 09:37

@alwayslosing - so you were there, then, were you, and know what the situation looked like to the cabin crew?!

mathanxiety · 25/07/2020 09:40

@alwayslosing

Posting this just for you.

This ^ is the airline the OP flew.

There is no mention of exceptions, and yes, they expect passengers to change masks every four hours.

The rules you need to follow on an airline are those of the airline, not your country of citizenship.

alwayslosing · 25/07/2020 09:40

@Walkaround were you?
It seems to me that you know first had that OP is unreasonable.

I read her post just like you but I choose to see the human side of it. If I was cabin crew On that flight I wouldn't have acted that way

alwayslosing · 25/07/2020 09:43

@mathanxiety the rules...I know...they expect passengers to follow them but as I asked previously do people really follow them 100%?

How do you know that the passenger next to you hasn't had that one mask from the beginning of this pandemic only to shut people up?

I've seen this happen so people are not as caring as you think.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2020 09:44

And Spain, and France, and Italy, and Greece... and many other countries that rely on tourism to feed their families.

@Drivingdownthe101
And yet the EU banned travel from America and thus deprived all those destinations of the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ of American tourists during the peak travel season...

Maybe the EU public health authorities are concerned about something?

They haven’t banned UK tourists though, they are actively targeting them with adverts around how it’s safe for us to travel there in holiday and they would love to see us over the summer.
Drivingdownthe101 · 25/07/2020 09:47

*on holiday

Walkaround · 25/07/2020 09:51

@alwayslosing - where have I said I think the OP was unreasonable? Why do you think only the OP is human? We have established she is upset and her post is as a consequence full of hyperbole. Now you just need to acknowledge that cabin crew are also human and will therefore react to what they perceive to be the situation.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2020 09:53

@alwayslosing, it seems to me from the OP's own description of her experience that the rules were pretty rigorously enforced by the trained cabin crew.

Thanks to the description of the OP, the cabin crew have been shat upon from a great height on this thread for their 'heartlessness'. They have been called 'jobsworths', and their commitment to the health and safety of the vast majority of passengers on the plane has been excoriated. They have been doing exactly what the airline website said they would be doing and enforcing the rules that are stated very clearly on the website.

I would hazard a guess that they also enforced the change your mask every four hours rule. As you will note in the website, passengers are given a spare mask to change into, and again from the OP's description, they do not seem to have been too shy at all about insisting that passengers follow rules.

KarenKarendson · 25/07/2020 09:57

you say that tourism, pubs and restaurants, blah blah, are all open for business, and that is true - for the UK.

True for Turkey too. I hope the op had a lovely time and went out lots (after she got over her terrible flight).
Thought you'd be here though, ready to pounce straight away... With your need to always be right... Me thinks you have nothing better to do. Why don't you go out. Go to the pub. Let your hair down. Don't forget your mask now.😉

notimagain · 25/07/2020 09:58

the rules...I know...they expect passengers to follow them but as I asked previously do people really follow them 100%?

Other than the OP AFAIK nobody here knows how the original incident played out on that aircraft.

In my experience Cabin Crew tend to be pragmatic when they can be but if they perceive somebody is continually pushing the edges of the rule set (and I'm not saying that's what happened to the OP, I'm now making a general point,) they can't, or least shouldn't be being seen to ignore it....at very least you can then run into "crowd control" Wink problems..as in " if you're letting hime perpetually keep his mask down why can't I....at worse complaints get made by other passengers, in extreme cases violations could get filed.

The situation on aircraft for those who don't like wearing masks is going to be less than optimal for the foreseeable future..I have no solution, but I'd seriously recommend avoiding playing the " I have a UK gov exemption card"..

Idontbelieveit12 · 25/07/2020 10:00

Everyone saying she should have taken medication. I’m pretty sure she’s kicking herself now, or maybe you all think she enjoyed throwing up for 5 hours while being in charge of two small children on a plane. Jesus Christ.

Thegereldine3000 · 25/07/2020 10:01

This is definatly something you could go to the papers with.

The UK is automatically included as 'safe' because of political affiliation with the EU until 31 December 2020. FYI Brexit only comes into full effect after the transition period.

Each state will have to announce when it intends to start readmitting citizens from some or all of those [15 approved] countries.

French officials say they expect to implement the decision in the "coming days".

The Czech Republic has published a list of eight countries that it considers safe for travel.

The EU list will be updated every two weeks.

I’m not sure how that is relevant to the fact that the tourist boards from the countries listed are actively targeting UK citizens to encourage us to take our holidays there? I saw one just yesterday that said ‘we’ll look after your safety, you look after your enjoyment’ or something along those lines. I am well aware of when Brexit comes into force thank you Grin.

My in laws live in Spain by the way, SIL owns an estate agents there and FIL owns and runs a golf club. They both mainly cater to locals so aren’t too badly affected but as a whole, the country is really pushing for tourists to return.

As other areas start going back into lockdown? Wasn't France considering closing the border with Spain?
