Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

Such vile people surfacing since this horrible pandemic. Shame it’s left them in its wake. Some people need to grow up and get with the real world. Sorry OP you suffered so bad and sorry for the nasty idiots commenting. Ignore them. You couldn’t have known. It’s not your fault. X

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 19:28

Unless this flight was a necessary flight you shouldn't be travelling anyway

Says who?

LokiOdinson · 24/07/2020 19:33

I'm severely emetophobic but it clearly wasn't your fault. I just hope it was a flight that was necessary to take versus a nice holiday, really. YANBU. Can't imagine how bad your breath would have smelt after it to be stuck in a mask.

Miseryl · 24/07/2020 19:38

Good god people are heartless. I'd have helped you OP if I could, I'd have held/entertained your babies etc.

Pombeary1 · 24/07/2020 20:02

Poor you, it must be dreadful not knowing when you are going to get travel sickness especially with two young kids. You were brave to travel during this period and hope that you have plenty of sickness tablets for the journey back. I can see why people feel appalled and disgusted with the smell of vomit but you should not be penalised for not wearing mask while busy being sick! Take lots of care Smile

MaxNormal · 24/07/2020 20:05

I'm really looking forward to my nice non-essential holiday in the sun next month Grin

How do you contact Mumsnet HQ? Not sure why my post got deleted saying I wasn’t sure that this is the full story l?? I’m cabin crew, I pointed out the no of sick bags usually carried on the plane and the medical procedures that the cabin crew would generally follow if someone was so ill on a plane and that I, therefore suspect that something in the original OP wasn’t quite right. Why is that trolling?

Doubting the truth of an OP is considered trolling.
Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 20:29

Sorry not trolling... troll hunting.

Honeyroar · 24/07/2020 20:33

Why? If you can give sensible evidence as to why you dispute it? I was quite supportive to the OP in a previous post on the thread. I wasn’t nasty when I said the medical procedures that would be followed. This is a discussion, surely?

Meinmytree · 24/07/2020 20:35

I get travel sick. I tend to be okay on planes, so probably wouldn't take a travel sickness tablet, especially if travelling with small children as they well and truly knock me out (as in, I woke up, saw we were on the tarmac, presumed I'd only closed my eyes for a few minutes and we'd not moved yet, only to find out I'd actually been fast asleep for the whole flight).

I rarely use buses, as public buses are the worst for me (even the smell makes me feel sick), and I know that having my face covered, therefore less supply to fresh air, will make me feel far worse.

I'd have hated being on the plane with you as I can't cope with others being sick, but at the same time it's not as if you chose to do that.

I do think people are being way too militant about masks. The science says that they may help, but that distancing, hand hygiene, not touching your face (which people seem to do more with masks on) are still the better option.

They’re not my rules 🤷🏻‍♀️
Honeyroar · 24/07/2020 20:37

No I realise they’re not your rules. It just seems silly.

Thewordgame · 24/07/2020 20:45

Penelopepitstop summed it up perfectly. It sounds like a terrible experience but not your fault at all, you were treated very badly by the air crew op, which airline out of interest? So I can avoid completely

Thewordgame · 24/07/2020 20:49

Just to add, I didn’t realise so many people lack any kind of compassion whatsoever, this thread is a real eye opener and like another poster said I would have tried to help you through it op if I was on that flight.

lily2403 · 24/07/2020 20:57

In the plane with recycled air, yes mask on

Meinmytree · 24/07/2020 20:58

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras
"If CPR were necessary and no one else could do it then I would give chest compressions but I would be really concerned. I wouldn't not do it though."

I had to do CPR a few weeks ago, one of the hardest things I have ever done. I didn't even think about the risk of Covid when I was there on the floor trying to save someone's life (unfortunately he didn't make it), in the same way that I didn't even think about how it would aggravate an existing injury, as at that point, they were not my priority.

Unless you’re vomiting, in which case you obviously need to take it off.
mathanxiety · 24/07/2020 21:03

Agree 100 percent, @FelicisNox.

Honeyroar · 24/07/2020 21:13

@Meinmytree well done for trying for him.💐

Thedogisdrivingmemad · 24/07/2020 21:15

Sounds horrendous. I had bad travel sickness recently on public transport and whilst I definitely do have a propensity for it, the mode of transport I was on does not normally make me ill and I am sure that wearing a mask was a big contributing factor. Nightmare as now I realise that taxis, buses, some trains and planes are all unworkable for me for the foreseeable for this reason. Not very practical!
OP how were you to know? Some really harsh comments on here and you deserve a medal for coping alone with two little ones whilst being so violently sick!

Annie8294 · 24/07/2020 21:20

You poor thing . It’s awful being poorly onboard . You deserve compassion and assistance not judgemental comments .

Harvestsquirrel1 · 24/07/2020 21:29

Who minded that babies during that 4 hours?

mathanxiety · 24/07/2020 21:30

@KarenKarendson, your comment 'Bollocks to this' in response to advice quoted from public health authorities around the world makes it clear that you have no time for the experts' advice.

I would like to know why you scoff at it.

Ok. And I've just spent the last four months locked up at home trying to avoid something that could kill me so I'm sorry if you don't like me considering my own health before tending to someone else, same as I wouldn't run into a burning building either.

I honestly don't know what I would do if faced with a situation where I was the only person able to help. Chances of CPR working outside of hospital are tiny anyway so I don't know what I would do. Knowing me, and knowing that I am trained to do CPR, I doubt I would walk on by. I wouldn't be doing respirations though. As for op, she wasn't in cardiac arrest so I'm not sure what it's got to do with anything. She chose to fly alone with two children and to not take preventative steps to avoid being sick - I'm not really sure why others should be expected to risk their health to help.her really.
