Took my mask off on the aeroplane AIBU

I was on a 5-hour flight recently alone with my two kids under 3. I once every few years might suffer from travel sickness and unfortunately on this day it was the worst I've ever had. I believe it may have been caused by having to wear the mask on the aeroplane. I used 20+ sickbags and felt better during the last hour (vomited for 4 hours, 5th hour was better).
I felt really bad but after I started vomiting I couldn't physically put my mask on because I couldn't breath and it made me gag. The air stewards were furiously coming and telling me to put my mask on every 5-10 mins. I had tears in my eyes during all of this and to be honest I can't comprehend how little compassion they had. They kept coming until I firmly said I would be putting my mask on when I felt better. I was keeping my distance from everyone and had no one sitting in front of me, behind or next to me (apart from my children). I didn't have a fever and it had I had been checked before boarding the plane. AIBU to think there was no reason to harrass me while I was throwing up with my face in a bag? Are you scared of people who don't wear masks? Would you go up to someone ill and tell them to put their mask on?

@Drivingdownthe101

Yes, but when you finish you put it back on.

Can’t continuously vomit.

Did the OP say she didn’t replace it in between vomits?

lily2403 · 24/07/2020 22:41

No idea didn’t read all she had to say.

I was answering someone’s direct question to me 🤷🏻‍♀️ And that was my answer

lily2403 · 24/07/2020 22:44

Just had a quick look at all her replies, and no she doesn’t state she did put it on, she said she would put it on when she felt better.

Probably come to the wrong place if you are looking for sympathy, I appreciate it must have been difficult for you but these circumstances are extreme. If you are travel sick then you could have taken medication before, and thought about if you need to travel. The airline staff are doing their job, they and the other passengers do not want to travel with someone not wearing a mask, espescialy if they are sick. Perhaps try to see things from other people's perspective

@TinySleepThief Thanks for clarifying. Perhaps I clicked on the wrong icon or something - a message appeared saying that the option I'd selected was only available to premium subscribers.

browneyes77 · 24/07/2020 23:06

There seems to be a lot of people on here that haven’t read the rules on masks properly.

You can be exempt from wearing a mask for one of the following reasons in this screenshot from the .Gov website.

Illness and suffering from severe distress being two of them. Both of which the OP had.

@browneyes77, are you assuming that passengers on all planes are governed by the UK rules on mask wearing, or are they are obliged to follow the rules put in place by the airline they are flying?

I ask because I gather that American Airlines has a rule (or will shortly implement a rule) that children over age 2 must wear a mask on board their fleet, with no exemptions. I assume this applies regardless of where AA flies.

As a matter of interest, many US airlines are now banning individuals who refuse to comply with their strict mask rules from future flights.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2020 06:07

That should read:

  • children over the age of 2 as well as all other passengers
Lucky2Be · 25/07/2020 07:06

@Chocoholic12

YABU. Yes I would. Get the mask on. If you get that sick do not fly during a pandemic where you have to wear a mask. Rude and entitled.
Rude and entitled? You are clearly the rude one!
purplelila2 · 25/07/2020 07:14

YANBU ignore the idiots on here down trolls.
You are exempt if unwell .

What else where you meant to do.

Tbh I'd email a complaint to the air line about their staffs attitude.

notimagain · 25/07/2020 07:15

As has been pointed out mask rules are dependent on the airline/country of registry of the aircraft.

The UK generic rules of wearing of masks in public at ground level, even in public transport, are irrelevant.

Msmcc1212 · 25/07/2020 07:24

If they hadn’t and you had infected others and someone died then the company might be held responsible. May be they could be sued. If they can say they did everything possible I’m guessing they would be legally protected?

Sound hideous. I get travel sick and it sucks. Acupuncture on points on the wrist helps. There is research and when I did try it it lasted a couple of days. I could even read in the car. Ginger tablets help too. Really feel for you.

mathanxiety · 25/07/2020 07:35

Indeed, @notimagain

www.turkishairlines.com/en-us/guidelines-for-safe-travel/

Here are the rules for the airline the OP flew.
There is no mention of exceptions.

Hygiene experts
Hygiene Expert cabin crews will be appointed in our flights, in charge of lavatory disinfection and enforcement of all on-board hygiene and social distancing measures.

Mask use
Wearing a mask is obligatory at all points at the airport as of your entrance.

Mask use
You must wear a mask during all processes including boarding the aircraft.

Mask use
Wearing a mask, covering your mouth and nose during the flight is mandatory. You can use a cloth or surgical mask. As single use masks have to be changed every 4 hours, if you are using one, you should keep sufficient number of masks at hand. Used masks should be put into personal waste bag without touching the front surface of the mask.

There are also regulations about distancing in the airport, wearing a mask in the airport, plus information on hands-free service, sanitising, and air filtration, all designed both to reassure passengers about hygiene and also to hammer home the seriousness of the current situation.

ChainVaper · 25/07/2020 07:48

You can’t help being unwell but if you have had travel sickness previously, surely you should have taken preventative measures just Incase ?? Especially with the pandemic?! Ok-so vomiting with a mask on is terrible and realistically not possible and you had to remove the mask but you deserve no sympathy as it could have been prevented. Especially if you’re responsible for 2 kids - surely the slightest possibility of travel sickness should’ve made you take precautions. I would have been bloody annoyed too if I were cabin crew. I have a four hour flight coming up in August and will be making sure I take travel sickness meds and wear a pressure band as I’d expect most people who suffer from travel sickness would do at the moment.

helpfulperson · 25/07/2020 08:01

I'm interested in what you threw up into 20 sick bags. Once your stomach is empty its normally just bile that comes up. I'm sure you could have had your mask on some of the time.

I spent 8 hours on a ferry constantly vomitting once. FYI after a while it’s just yukky bile liquid but it keeps coming believe me

Littlebelina · 25/07/2020 08:28

My son had novo last year, I can well believe someone vomited 20 times!

suprised this thread is still standing though

Walkaround · 25/07/2020 08:59

Msmc1212 - what, 8 hours incapable of sipping any fluids to replace your lost electrolytes and your diaphragm constantly heaving violently and painfully without any break whatsoever?! Surely you mean you felt constantly sick and vomited bile regularly over that period - constant vomiting for 8 hours is physically impossible. You would have died.

KarenKarendson · 25/07/2020 09:04

your comment 'Bollocks to this' in response to advice quoted from public health authorities around the world makes it clear that you have no time for the experts' advice.

I would like to know why you scoff at it.

My comment 'bollocks' was in direct response to this.

Was it essential travel OP? If it wasn’t, you are being very unreasonable.... Stay at home. Do not travel unless essential. Do not put other people at risk.

Because with travel and tourism now opened up, parks now open, with the pubs and restaurants now open, the 'advice' given above is not the current advice. Or were you not aware of that? I'm not scoffing at public health advice. I'm scoffing at people like you, and the person who posted that comment, for your sanctimonious posts berating people for going out for non essential travel, when the rules now say we can do exactly that. I'm surprised I have to point that out to you really...

Msmcc1212 · 25/07/2020 09:11

Walkaround

Bit pedantic, but yes. Of course it wasn’t constant. That’s a turn of phrase. My point being that it is surprising that you can actually keep producing something over a prolonged period of vomiting. It’s hellish. Always happens to some extent to me on ferries. Even on calm days. Never doing an 8 hour one again.

alwayslosing · 25/07/2020 09:16

Frikkin' Hell some posters on here are incredibly cruel.
God save us all as humans prove to have no humanity left.
OP was sick and all you can do is have a go at her. This virus is airborne but are you going to tell me that people don't touch their faces / masks while on a flight and then touch surfaces? That people replace their masks once they get wet and should no longer be used( especially on a long flight)?
That all people on that flight are acting 100% responsible ?
Why are there exceptions? Such as asthma sufferers?
Why are exceptions allowed if you have a medical certificate and why wasn't this lady considered an exception in this situation?
I'm amazed of how many people believe she was in the wrong.

JosieJasper · 25/07/2020 09:24

I think you should have taken travel sickness pills

Travel sickness pills make my DH so sleepy and groggy, he would not be able to look after young children, so this may not have been an option for OP.

Also, as some PPs think OP shouldn’t have got on the flight during Covid, I assume that you are saying the same to all those who are exempt from wearing a face covering as they have as much chance of putting others at risk?

Sorry you had to go through that OP, awful enough with the sickness but then to be made to feel bad is not on Flowers

AliceinBunnyland · 25/07/2020 09:26

The rule is to wear a mask. You have been travel sick before. You couldn't wear one while vomiting but you should have the rest of the time. There will be other people who also find it very uncomfortable to wear a mask and those people would either have been wearing a mask or will have stayed at home.
