Calendars that start on a Sunday

orangesky1 · 20/07/2020 21:18

I accidentally bought a calendar this year which begins the week on a Sunday.

I am constantly getting the days wrong and weekend events are split over two lines.

Does anyone actually prefer this??

YANBU : week should start with Monday

YABU : starting week on Sunday is fine

An explanation I heard in a (1980s) children's programme was: "Because the days of Saturday and Sunday come at the ends of the week, they're called weekends".

I agree with you though, first day of the week is Monday. Unfortunately my DH's work rota is organised with the week beginning on Sunday.

As for annoying calendars, I give you this: when I was 21, I saw a calendar in a shop reduced to 50p. Bargain - I bought it. When I got home, I discovered it was LAST YEAR'S calendar!!!! Shock However, not to be defeated, I changed the days of the week at the top of every page!

I don’t even understand it from a Christian point of view. Sunday is the day of rest, as God created their world then on the seventh day he rested. Ie after all the other days. So Sunday is the last day. Not the first day! It’s so so annoying.

MadameBrioche · 20/07/2020 21:57

I don’t even understand it from a Christian point of view. God created the world and then rested on the seventh day. Is at the end, after days one to six. So Sunday is the last day of the week. Why make it the first? Madness.

MadameBrioche · 20/07/2020 21:58

Oh sorry double post!

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 20/07/2020 21:59

I’m a prison officer, our week starts on a Sunday. It did when I worked in retail too.

That said I completely agree with you op, it’s ridiculous and annoying.

Saturday ( the Jewish Sabbath) is the 7th day of the week when God rested from creating.
Sunday is described as the first day of the week in the book of Acts and Christians started meeting on this day from the earliest days of the church ( when it would have been an ordinary working day) as this was the day when Jesus rose from the dead.
"Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance."
John 20 verse 1

It's standard in my husband's job. So we look for calendars that do this

MadameBrioche · 20/07/2020 22:09

Ah interesting I didn’t know that difference between the OT and the NT.

Mmsnet101 · 20/07/2020 22:09

I do payroll for weekly paid employees and it always runs Sunday - Saturday so I've become used to it for work, but can't get used to it at home for some reason.

TheGoogleMum · 20/07/2020 22:09

I prefer Monday as the first day too! I hope some calendar making companies are paying attention!

Metallicalover · 20/07/2020 22:11

My working week starts on a Sunday. My niece was taught days of the week starting on a Sunday x

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 20/07/2020 22:12

I got a calendar this year which has the Sunday at the start of the line and it confuses me so much.

The pictures are puppies doing yoga so I went for pictures over layout

We were taught Sunday is the first day of the week but I think now they're taught it as Monday. It's old fashioned but definitely has it's place here rather than the us or Middle East.

vanillandhoney · 20/07/2020 22:13

Every job I've ever had has had Sunday as the first day of the working week. Same as calendars, come to think of it.

iolaus · 20/07/2020 22:16

I changed NHS trust and now work for one where the week runs Mon - Sun instead of Sun - Sat - hate it, can't get used to it - preferred Sunday being the start of the week

OleanderOllivander · 20/07/2020 22:25

It doesn't help with "pretty" calendars, but for purely functional ones you can customise printable free ones online, starting whichever way you prefer, with a year to a page, or a month or whatever layout you prefer. Just Google it. I suppose you could make them pretty if you liked!

Leaannb · 20/07/2020 22:29

This is such an American thing

3rdNamechange · 20/07/2020 22:33

Sunday is the first day of the week

VestaTilley · 20/07/2020 22:34

Sunday is traditionally the first day of the week.

NameChange84 · 20/07/2020 22:36

Private School, religious upbringing, was always taught that Sunday was the first day of the week.

Lougle · 20/07/2020 22:40

I use the Business Calendar app. You can choose which day the week starts on.

IHeartHarryStyles · 20/07/2020 22:42

Ugh. I’ve misbooked a hotel for work on more than one occasion by not realising that a calendar on the website started the week on a Sunday 😡

lazylinguist · 20/07/2020 22:43

I'm nearly 50 and for me (and everyone I know, I think) the week starts on a Monday. I have never had a calendar where weeks start on Sunday. I thought it was an American thing.

ClickandForget · 20/07/2020 22:55

I don't think it's an American thing. I'm in my 60s and was always taught Sunday is the first day of the week.
