Calendars that start on a Sunday

orangesky1 · 20/07/2020 21:18

I accidentally bought a calendar this year which begins the week on a Sunday.

I am constantly getting the days wrong and weekend events are split over two lines.

Does anyone actually prefer this??

YANBU : week should start with Monday

YABU : starting week on Sunday is fine

I accidently bought one once but never again... I like Monday to be the beginning it's new week at work/school for us

ProfYaffle · 21/07/2020 08:03

I was also taught at school that the week starts on a Sunday - this was the UK in the 70s/80s

@EhUp

I had one that started on a Sunday last year and it really pissed me off

When selecting my 2020 calendar I made a point of avoiding the same and chose one starting on a Monday

(since everything since mid March has been cancelled it hasn't been quite the life changing decision it should have been though Angry)

I did exactly the same. Then had to scrub everything from March on with a red pen.

Clearly we need two versions of calendars, one that starts with Sunday, one that starts with Monday. It should be very clear which one you are looking at so nobody buys the wrong sort and spends the rest of the year seething. And also none of that fifteen months crap, I never use the extra months because, big surprise, I buy a new calendar annually, not every fifteen months. I have no need for September onwards to be covered twice!

(They should also include nice big stickers for the various appointments and leave enough room in the box to write your gubbins in. And not pointlessly include hundreds of stickers for various saints' days but plenty for "school photo day, make sure they're wearing clean uniform")

@LioneIRichTea

I remember in (my religious) school, Sunday was taught as the first day of the week but then we were also taught that we should rest of the 7th day (being the Sabbath - Sunday) so I was always confused Grin
Agree with this. My churchy mother always says Monday is the second day of the week.

It's a very old-fashioned view which I think is falling out of favour as fewer people go to church.

When I was working in retail our week starts on a Sunday so I did find these really helpful for work then, but now I'm Monday -Friday it's straight back to the "normal" week

TrickorTreacle · 21/07/2020 11:01

I'm not religious or American, but I have always known Sunday to be the first day of the week.

In computing / coding, Sunday is often assigned as 0, weekdays as 1-5 and Saturday as 6.

In Microsoft Windows and in Outlook, you can set which day is the first day of the week, so I set that as Sunday. For paper-based calendar, I have a fairy tales one, shows 1 month per page in a grid and the weeks start on a Sunday there too.

The80sweregreat · 21/07/2020 11:10

Monday is the start of the week !
I know it was always Sunday when I was a kid but any calendars should start on a Monday!!
😀
It should be a law!

Here's a joke that the "week starts on Sunday" crowd can wind others up with. Smile

"What does T O spell?"
"To."
"What does T O O spell?"
"Too."
"What does T W O spell?"
"Two."
"What is the second day of the week?"
"Tuesday", or, trying to be clever, "Toosday".
"No - Monday is the second day of the week!"

Esspee · 22/07/2020 07:03

Sunday is the first day of the week so the calendars you normally buy are wrong.

Ginfordinner · 22/07/2020 07:06

@ClickandForget

I don't think it's an American thing. I'm in my 60s and was always taught Sunday is the first day of the week.
It isn't an American thing. I agree that it must be a generational thing. I am 61, and have always thought of Sunday as the first day of the week. DD is 20 and says that Monday is the first day of the week.
Watermelontea · 22/07/2020 07:18

Sunday is the start of my working week, so it makes sense to me!

Jumblebumblemess · 22/07/2020 07:31

Those saying its a religious thing, this makes no sense. On the 7th day God rested which became Sunday. So that makes it the 7th day of the week and Monday is a new week.

FriedasCarLoad · 22/07/2020 07:33

To me, Sunday is the first day of the week.

That's in line with the bible and with UK tradition... But I realise it's out of step with the majority of our society and I'm always surprised to see diaries and calendars set out like that!

TeacupDrama · 22/07/2020 07:48

Sabbath and Sunday are not the same, the Sabbath was the 7th day (evening and morning which is why Jewish Sabbath starts sundown on Friday till sundown on Saturday) according to Bible the resurrection was on 1st day not the Sabbath hence first day of the week in Christian tradition is Sunday. Seventh day Adventist keep Saturday the 7th day as their holy day not Sunday like most Christian churches, in Jewish tradition Sunday is also first day of the week
