Calendars that start on a Sunday

orangesky1 · 20/07/2020 21:18

I accidentally bought a calendar this year which begins the week on a Sunday.

I am constantly getting the days wrong and weekend events are split over two lines.

Does anyone actually prefer this??

YANBU : week should start with Monday

YABU : starting week on Sunday is fine

I always used Sun-Sat until I started a job in an ad agency 30 years ago - all the schedules ran Mon-Sun. Have stuck with that system in and out of work ever since.

MrBennsshop · 20/07/2020 23:01

DH says the week begins on Sunday. Should I LTB?

BalanceGreen · 20/07/2020 23:07

I've already responded, but have to comment again because I'm really surprised at the number of people OK with a Sunday start!
Solomon Grundy was born on a Monday.

BackforGood · 20/07/2020 23:33

Sunday has long been considered the 1st day of the week.

In the Old Testament, it is written that God created the earth {insert detail for the first 6 days} and on the 7th day he rested, and this was the Sabbath. Well, the Jewish Sabbath is Saturday, which makes Sunday the first day.
Yes, I know calendars changed over the centuries but that''s just to explain to folk who have said "the Church" ought to have Sunday as the day of rest, ie the 7th day.

The song they use to teach days of the week at most Nurseries and Reception classes has the week starting on a Sunday. So it MUST be right Wink

Calendars here in the US always start on a Sunday. We get a calendar from my mum each year with various English scenes on it (just to make me homesick) and they always start on a Monday. My American husband still thinks it’s weird and every time he looks at the calendar he has to comment that it’s confusing to him that our kitchen calendar starts on a Monday.

Murmurur · 21/07/2020 00:42

Yes, biblical or not it's so much more practical to have Sat and Sun together. And it's surprisingly difficult, every year, to find a calendar that has both big square-ish boxes, and Sat and Sun together. First world problem of course.

sbhydrogen · 21/07/2020 00:43

I have an American calendar and it starts on Sunday. Very annoying.

BaronessBomburst · 21/07/2020 00:54

I can do either. I cook in pounds and ounces, but weigh myself in kilos. Wine comes in litres, milk in pints. I measure in inches but walk kilometres. I grew up in the era when everything changed.and the week started on a Sunday Grin

WindyRose · 21/07/2020 03:54

As some have already suggested, God created the world then on the 7th day (Sunday) also the Sabbath he rested, is what I was taught at school. At one time I had to take a calendar to school and it had Sunday as the first day of the week and it was ripped out of my hands and torn to shreds and I almost got the cane but didn't know why.

It took a few years to be told the real reason and that was a calendar starting with Sunday as the first day of the week was Seventh Day Adventist calendar as their end of week is Saturday.

I don't have religious beliefs one way or the other, but do prefer a calendar where the week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday...it's not connected to beliefs in any way, just convenience.

Don't know about any USA connection, never heard about that but then I don't live in the USA.

PhilCornwall1 · 21/07/2020 04:54

There is an international standard for this, you just knew there had to be, ISO8601, which considers Monday to be the start of the week, also has been referred to as the start of the "trade" week.

Countries such as America, Canada and Oz consider Sunday to be the first day of the week.

Sadly I knew this crap, as I had to do a code change for one of the systems we sell just to satisfy an Australian customer. They did pay shitloads for us to do it, so we didn't complain.

ZombieFan · 21/07/2020 04:57

How fucking annoying, would never buy a calendar that had this mistake.

Sleepthief · 21/07/2020 05:28

YANBU - this drives me up the wall too! I'm now really fussy about calendars.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 21/07/2020 05:30

Sunday is the first day of the week and we teach the children that. Maybe they should advertise calendars or diaries as traditional or working week ones.

CrazyDuchess · 21/07/2020 05:39

When i worked in retail, Sunday was the first day if the week

Outfoxed · 21/07/2020 06:10

Sunday to saturday was how the weeks went when I worked in retail

wanderings · 21/07/2020 07:21

I've had the same problem with diaries having Saturday and Sunday marginalised, and squashed together; they used to be my busiest working days. And anyway, here is the ultimate authority for the order of the days of the week:

Monday's child is fair of face;
Tuesday's child is full of grace;
Wednesday's child is full of woe;
Thursday's child has far to go.
Friday's child is loving and giving.
Saturday's child works hard for a living.
But the child that is born on the Sabbath day
is bonny, and blythe, and good, and gay.

And how about this gem? Be very afraid on Tuesday!
Sneeze on Monday, sneeze for danger.
Sneeze on Tuesday, kiss a stranger.
Sneeze on Wednesday, get a letter.
Sneeze on Thursday, something better.
Sneeze on Friday, sneeze for sorrow,
Sneeze on Saturday, see your sweetheart tomorrow.
Sneeze on Sunday - your safety seek:
The devil will have you for the whole of the week.

Other rhymes seem to have Monday as the first day.

Lemons1571 · 21/07/2020 07:32

Cant have the weekend split. You then need to draw arrows all over it to link an event happening on both days of a weekend and it’s messy.

Buy a “month to view” and write small 😂

Nanny0gg · 21/07/2020 07:35

It is old school traditional. Sunday was always considered the first day of the week.

Durgasarrow · 21/07/2020 07:46

Yes, I'm American, our calendars start on Sundays.

Deelish75 · 21/07/2020 07:51

I've always had calendars which start on a Monday and show the full weekend.

Also since DS started school I've been getting September to August calendars so I can fill in all the school holidays in one go.

Mrsemcgregor · 21/07/2020 07:54

My CofE schooling taught me Sunday was the first day of the week and deep down in my roots I feel that it is. Like eating fish on Friday. Even though I am agnostic!

But practically having a calendar with Saturday and Sunday together at the end of the week is much easier.

notacooldad · 21/07/2020 07:55

YABU.
I have always worked on Sunday being the first day of the week ever since I was a child.
My current diary starts on Monday and it us really annoying!

LioneIRichTea · 21/07/2020 07:56

Sunday is the weekEND. It has no business being at the start of a calendar!

I agree!! Grin

lifeafter50 · 21/07/2020 07:57

YANBU
Sunday is part of the 'weekend'.
Big clue there!

LioneIRichTea · 21/07/2020 08:00

I remember in (my religious) school, Sunday was taught as the first day of the week but then we were also taught that we should rest of the 7th day (being the Sabbath - Sunday) so I was always confused Grin
