To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

Even if a woman chooses to have long hair because she feels it makes her prettier, I highly doubt that all she cares about is what random men would think.

Also, many women who wear hijabs have super long hair. Even when they're married and only their husband or female friends or family are likely to see their hair. I sincerely don't think that those particular women only have long hair in order to be attractive to the opposite sex. The majority must choose to keep their hair long for themselves because they prefer how they look in the mirror, as nobody is going to see it when they're walking down the road.

MaggieAndHopey · 20/07/2020 11:05

Charlize Theron can get away with short hair - she still looks like the beautiful woman she is - but she suits longer hair better. Someone like Michelle Williams, on the other hand, has pretty much perfected the pixie crop, likewise Mia Farrow, and I think that length suits/suited them more than long does.

I have very short hair that I'm currently trying to grow and everyone is telling me not to. I know I'll be deep in awkward territory soon without some very good trims, and it will take all my resolve to persevere. I'm not even sure why I'm doing it at this point.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 20/07/2020 11:07

I keep my hair long because it is thick and curly and needs the weight of longer hair to keep it under some sort of rudimentary control, and (related) because I think it suits me better that way. Lots of women look terrific with short hair but I don't think I'm one of them.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 20/07/2020 11:07

I'm amazed that anyone doesn't! It really highlights her great bone structure and she looks stunning

Her hair style is similar to mine

Her face unfortunately is not

😩

Beautiful3 · 20/07/2020 11:10

I've had my fair share of short haircuts. I have a very round face. I know now that long hair makes my face look slimmer. You need amazing cheek bones to get away with short hair.

JKRisagryff · 20/07/2020 11:11

I’ve had my hair all kinds of lengths and definitely agree with the longer it is the easier it is to manage. It’s mid length now after growing it out from a short cut and I’d forgotten how nice it is to just be able to throw it up, doesn’t need washed as often, I can trim it myself.

When it was really long I just chucked it up in a bun at night, no styling, washed it once a week, didn’t go to the hairdresser for years. It’s so handy!

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 20/07/2020 11:11

Short needs constant trims, more styling and product etc

Regular haircuts are very costly.

nannybeach · 20/07/2020 11:11

I had my long hair cut, very short once, and suddenly realised I couldnt keep a hat on it at work (nursing) MY second DH thinks short hair on women is sexy. its been elbow length, up to short spiky, shaved at the back, I (still) get realy bad hot flushes, (side effect of medication) so prefer it long enough to tie up or back. My first H, who was a control freak (and atempted murderer) wanted me to have short hair, so the one thing I did throughout our marriage was keep it long.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 20/07/2020 11:12

He actually doesn’t like my hair this long because it gets in the way and he lies on it in bed when he’s asleep, then I kick him to get off my hair. He associates my long hair with him being painfully woken up.

Haha yes this! Also the need to keep the hair out of the way when you're DTD or you end up laying on it & it pulls your head back so you're trapped... long hair problems.

Rainbunny · 20/07/2020 11:12

I've also had every length of hair from super short to mid-back length and frankly keeping my hair at just below shoulder length is the best for me.

The period when I had a very short cut (Judi Dench short - which I love btw) was fun for a month but ultimately was more high maintenance than long hair in terms of needing to keep it trimmed. My DM went very short in her sixties but she doesn't get regular hair trims so most of the time her hair doesn't look good and it only looks nice when she does get around to having it trimmed.

Also, a short hair cut is unforgiving and frankly not the most flattering for many women. I'm afraid I rarely see a woman with a short hair style that I think is flattering to her features. Short hair can look stunning (especially if you're Halle Berry!) but that's not the norm IMO, sorry Blush

Itsarattrap · 20/07/2020 11:13

Nope. I prefer it myself and can’t stand going to hairdressers.

Jennygentle · 20/07/2020 11:15

I’ve had everything from a buzz cut to long hair. As a middle-age woman with slightly sagging jowls and a round face, I think longer hair is infinitely more flattering.
I genuinely don’t know which DH prefers.

Deelish75 · 20/07/2020 11:15

I have very thick unruly hair.

In autumn and winter I wear it shoulder length. It takes about 30 mins to dry it and then another 15 to straighten. Then in March I start to grow it so I can tie it up over the summer as the back of my neck gets really sweaty under my hair. I did once have my hair cut short over the summer and it was a pain - never again!
What do men think of it? I have no idea, I do what works for me.

Walkaround · 20/07/2020 11:17

Unless you actually shave all your hair off, short hair for women is hugely more effort to look after and maintain than hair long enough just to tie out of the way, so I tend to think that women with short hair are the ones who are likely to be far more invested in their appearance and its effect on others than women with long hair. It would never cross my mind one way or the other whether they are obsessed with their hair for the benefit of men, or just because they are happy to waste time on their hair and constant trips to the hairdresser.

swampytiggaa · 20/07/2020 11:18

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

We don't all avoid short hair. I hate hair. Anywhere on my body. It's an unwanted irritation.

I don't give a fuck what men think Smile

Quite a few women I know had shorter cuts just before they had babies because they mistakenly thought it would be easier and time saving. They were disappointed. They constantly moaned about all the washing and effort a short style required compared to how low maintenance long hair is. Same with lock down. Everyone I know with long hair has just got longer hair. But all of those with sharp short styles have found it difficult without a regular trim - 2 shaved their heads out frustration and desperation.

People often say if you have long hair and wear it up all the time then you should have it short (sorry I can’t remember the pp who said that). But I disagree, a long style up does not have the same effect on your face as a short style. I have a round/oval face with quite a small forehead. I do not need any width to the side of my face but I do need height to elongate it a bit - so a high bun works perfectly, but I cannot think of a short style which would achieve the same effect (especially not one that was not totally out of fashion and would look out of place now).

I think it’s quite a dated opinion that women over 40 should have short hair and reminds me of the kind of thing my Nans (who wore their hair like helmets) would say.

Coffeepot72 · 20/07/2020 11:19

I really wanted short hair, but once I'd had it cut I realised that unless I was having an extremely good hair day (rare) I generally looked like Nicola Sturgeon, which wasn't the look I was going for. I'm nearly back to shoulder length again now, and I prefer it. Nothing to do with men whatsoever!

Elsiebear90 · 20/07/2020 11:20

I’m a lesbian, so couldn’t care less what men find attractive, I have really long hair and it’s because it’s way easier and cheaper to maintain than when I had a bob, and I like how it looks. I have a chubby face, so short hair doesn’t suit me at all as it makes my face look fatter.

Rainbunny · 20/07/2020 11:22

As for keeping hair long to attract men, I disagree with that. I do agree that many women have long hair because they feel it's more attractive on them but as with clothes, I honestly think I'm dressing myself to feel attractive around other women more than men (I'm straight as it happens) but women are the ones who really notice how each other looks.

Men can be pretty unsubtle about women's looks/clothes (massive stereotype I know). From my own experience I know that clothes I love wearing and feel attractive and fashionable in, many times are not what my DH finds attractive. He'd be excited if I wore a cheap clingy dress from TopShop whereas I like more on-trend and better quality clothing. I used to follow a fashion blog written by a young single woman living in NY who loved fashion but found that in the dating world men did not appreciate her sense of style. The blog was named ''Man Repeller'' which sums it up perfectly lol!

Tooshytoshine · 20/07/2020 11:23

I have long hair and I'm a lesbian. I couldn't give a hoot if men fancy me or not - it just makes me feel like a flame haired goddess (I'm not Smile)

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 20/07/2020 11:23

@Beautiful3 - no you don't. I suit short hair. (It's currently extremely short, I'm growing out a buzzcut, through laziness rather than choice.) I'm neither particularly photogenic nor do I have especially prominent cheekbones. I do suit hats though. And I don't wear makeup either, although I do have some, again due to laziness - I just can't be bothered to put it on.

When I had long hair - extremely long, I could sit on my plait - it looked much better up. I think I don't have a "soft" face.

Women aren't a one size fits all category. Most men look fine with short hair, regardless of cheekbones.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 20/07/2020 11:24

Its not hugely more effort to look after in the slightest

I do get my hair cut every 4 weeks for £10 but so does dh

I am happy to agree that for some women a shorter hairstyle is more effort

For some women a longer hair style is more effort

Depends on the hair

But i think I’ll bow out now anyway...i always think the comments mean me specifically 😀

QueenBlueberries · 20/07/2020 11:25

I've had short hair before. Having short hair is expensive. That would be a hair cut every 6 weeks for me. Plus products, as I have curly, thick hair and when short it goes all over the place.

I like long hair because I have it cut every 6 months and save loads of money and time. In the morning I can just put it up if I don't want to style it. It's a lot less trouble.

And I like my long hair.

nitsandwormsdodger · 20/07/2020 11:26

There are a few women who still dress act and behave in a way solely to attract and keep a mate and they are not the women I hang around with

The other 90 billion are ok

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 20/07/2020 11:31

Hahaha at short hair being expensive. I have one word for that.

Clippers.
