To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

but why do lesbians with short hair get called the butch one?

Called by whom?

squeekums · 20/07/2020 00:35

@Ilovegreentomatoes

All I'm reading is I have long hair because I'm lazy....I always assumed longer hair would be more time consuming for washing/blowdry/brushing?
you assumed wrong Its easier and cheaper to have it long for me funny how your ignoring we keep it long cos we like it do you assume we cant think for ourselves and are just brainwashed?Generally, people know what they like and what looks best on them.
Ilovegreentomatoes · 20/07/2020 00:36

@LonginesPrime seems to be a public conception which I find insulting to any lesbian/bi person.

Hate with a passion this kind of hair that menopausal women seem to adopt .

I have my hair the way I want it and it is not for anyone else, male or female. My hair is just past my shoulders because that's how I like it. Couldn't care less about anyone else's opinion about it.

Wash mine once a week (anymore and it dries out), brush it when I put it up and never blow dry it.

When I had short hair I took far longer buggering about with it than I do now.

Destroyedpeople · 20/07/2020 00:37

Yes'but most older men with long hair do it to compensate for baldness whereas usually women don't go bald.

So not sure how you can compare 'like for like'.

Anyway you asked about sexism I answered.

you should have said you only meant middle aged men with long hair and no sign of baldness.

Not sure there are even many of those about tbh.

squeekums · 20/07/2020 00:38

@TheStuffedPenguin the day i adopt that hairstyle is the day i need to be committed to the nursing home, ive obviously lost my mind lol
That would not suit me in any way

MoominKitty · 20/07/2020 00:39

Tbf I currently have long hair as:

  1. I had a baby 6 months ago and I'm on shit mat pay so can't afford the hairdresser.
  1. Was growing it out for a wedding, though post partum hair loss is making me look motheaten.
  1. It's less time consuming to tie up long hair the day after a wash (very greasy thin hair) than to wash and style a graduated Bob (my fav style on me).

In honesty if my skull wasn't so lumpy and my face so fat I'd shave the lot off 😂 but once im back on normal pay my Bob will be back.

Peeta · 20/07/2020 00:39

I have thick wavy hair. I've had it long and short before. Long is easier as doesn't need styling: can just put it up in a "struggle bun". Which is how it stays most of the time now.

My partner says his favourite was when I had a bob, but I cba with the upkeep of the 6 weekly cuts. Haven't had mine cut in 6 months!

If I could pull off a bob without having to blow dry and straighten or curl it, then I would have it cut short again. But I'm lazy, so I won't.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 20/07/2020 00:40

I love long hair and I love short hair and I honestly don't give a cats arse what random ppl on the internet do it was just a general question but it seems most have long hair because they feel it suits them better not because of society's perception so my question has been answered.

Right, but why are you perpetuating the homophobia by asking gay people to tell you why people say stupid, homophobic things?

You've thrown a couple of homophobic comments into this thread on the basis "they're things people say" but if you hadn't been the person saying them, then no-one would be saying them on this thread!

I am 47, menopausal with long purple hair.

My mother is 70 with this style, as are most of her friends, because they were children of the 60's. My grandmother had a short perm, as did most of her contemporaries.

Fashions change....who knew?

Thegreymethod · 20/07/2020 00:41

I've had different length hair but prefer it long like it is now because I can style it in different ways, another plus point is I'm lazy and can tie it up/put it in a bun (I do that most days!) and also I'm not great at doing hair and when I've had it shorter i loved it when the hairdresser cut it but could never get it right myself. My husband does prefer it longer too but that wouldn't stop me getting it cut short it I wanted too.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 20/07/2020 00:41

@burninh

Someone quick, tell JLO and Nicole Scherzinger how AWFUL they look and to hurry up and get a bob

tbf J Los real hair is just below the shoulders I think. nicole's isn't here either, she had a bob last yr & it looked amazing.

I think a bob can still be classed as “long” though it’s really no comparison to a proper short haircut, pixie etc, they are completely different beasts, and bobs are relatively easy to grow out compared to proper short hair, if J Lo or Nicole ever rock up with a Pixie cut then I will be impressed.
xolotltezcatlopoca · 20/07/2020 00:42

I always had shorter hair when younger. I have long hair now because it's so much easier to manage.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/07/2020 00:44

I like having longer hair so I can tie it back off my face. I've had it really short, medium length and long, and have found that even with a short style it still irritates me by falling on my face at some point - the only way it would not get on my nerves is if I had a crew cut. But then I'd look like a prat because I don't suit really short hair. I like having options on how to put it up as well. DH couldn't have cared less what length I had - the only style he wasn't keen on was the mullet I rocked whilst trying to grow out a disaster. I hated that too! It is currently fairly long, i have nobody to please except myself these days although my parents keep telling me I'm too old for long hair which makes me even more stubborn!

Catra · 20/07/2020 00:45

I have long hair because my hair is my favourite physical attribute, so why would I have less of it? Most of the compliments I receive about it are from women, not men, but ultimately I keep it long because I personally love it that way.

There's a lot I don't love about my physical appearance - my round face for one. Shorter hair only accentuates it.

I've always had a strong preference for men with long hair. Nothing to do with how masculine or feminine it makes them look, more that I've never been attracted to the clean-cut look.

JellyfishandShells · 20/07/2020 00:45

It’s fashion - look at previous decades and there will be prevailing trends ( tight perms, big rollers/ backcombing , feather cuts, choppy layers .......) The mid to long straightened hair as a default , with very few short cuts has gone on for a couple of decades, so maybe longer duration than before.

Older women have more variety and I see shorter bobs amongst the 30/40 age group and some more radical cuts on 20s but it’s among teenagers that I hardly ever see anything but straightened curtains.

Go the long purple, great look!
I should know, its what i choose at 32

eaglejulesk · 20/07/2020 00:47

No if your hair is curly/wavy it’s more time consuming to look good if it’s shorter (is for me) and needs to be cut regularly

My hair is curly/wavy and it couldn't be easier to look after when short. Takes far more faffing around when it is longer - plus so much longer time to dry. Get it cut four times a year usually.

If I was only pleasing myself I'd be 300 lbs and have a buzz cut, wear joggers and trainers all the time.

Coyoacan · 20/07/2020 00:52

Long hair on anyone over 40 looks awful. Shoulder length at most

Don't come to Mexico then where women aren't hung up by your petty rules.

I have always had long hair because short hair doesn't suit me. and I've been celebate for over thirty years, so if I'm doing it to attract men it's not working.
