To think she can wear these in September

Hi I know I'm not being unreasonable! But I want the traffic.

Do girls tend to go back to school in summer clothes in september? Or do they go back in the winter uniform? Or is it a mixture. What do you see normally?

My daughter is going into year one. I made the mistake of buying my daughter summer dresses last year in August for this summer. They were £7.50 each and still have labels in. I got her 3. I'm thinking do I sell them on eBay which is probably the wrong time of the year and I won't get £21 back. Or do I dress her in them in September if the suns out still?

Randomly this year I noted one girl wore a summer dress all year. I'm not sure why she didn't have the winter uniform. But she was the only one through the winter in a gingham dress.

It's too late for me to ask the school as they shut Friday.

Thank you 😊

My daughters wear summer dresses all year. They just team it with tights in the winter.
The school is so hot that they complained of being hot in the polo shirt and pinafore etc. Also, they’re easier to get on and off.

After8itsgrownuptime · 19/07/2020 07:01

At our school it’s eithrr summer or winter uniform (parents choice based on daily weather) until October half term. After that it’s winter uniform

Mydogisthebestest · 19/07/2020 07:01

My girls wore Summer dresses until Oct half term.

joyjester · 19/07/2020 07:03

When my DD was in year one they could wear summer uniform up until half term in October. Does their website not have the uniform code?

MyOtherProfile · 19/07/2020 07:03

At our school they wore summer dresses as long as they liked. In reality it was probably until October half term. We were encouraged to then give spare uniform back to the school so the PTA could sell it on.

Even if you sell new you won't get £21 if you paid £7.50 each for them.

OryxNotCrake · 19/07/2020 07:03

My DDs have pretty much always gone back in summer uniform. Winter uniforms come out in October or whenever it gets too cold to wear a flimsy dress.

Dinnerfor1 · 19/07/2020 07:03

Summer dresses are fine in September. At my daughter’s school there’s a mixture of summer uniform and winter uniform until about October half term.

cliffdiver · 19/07/2020 07:04

The school uniform policy should be on their website.

My DDs wear theirs in the summer term, but occasionally at the beginning of the Autumn term is warm enough.

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 07:08

Thank you. I've seen the on the website they list what they can wear but not any indication of when this is allowed. It just says summer and winter.

So I should be ok to get a few weeks out of it in September if it's still warm. She has to wear pe kit on the days she does pe so she won't be getting changed so the buttons won't be a problem for her yet.

I really need to teach her how to do buttons!

Ours wear Summer dresses until at least end of Sept here. Depends on weather!

And from Easter onwards.

ChaoticCatling · 19/07/2020 07:14

I'd check with the school. Won't they fit next summer too though? DS was in shorts and polo and they lasted over two years, three sets in primary. I'd image dresses would last as long.

Shortandsweet20 · 19/07/2020 07:15

At my school they can wear summer uniform until October half term and then from Easter onwards. We aren't that strict on it, so you get the occasional one wearing shorts in February! You should be fine

Nquartz · 19/07/2020 07:16

DD will wear summer dresses in September if it's warm enough but it is short-lived. Personally I'd put them away and try to.sell as brand new in April next year.

Or can you return for an exchange?

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 19/07/2020 07:18

I would still use if the weather is nice but i wouldn't pair with tights as i just think it looks a bit odd Blush

Monstamio · 19/07/2020 07:19

Mixture of summer and winter uniform (minus cardi and tights) in September at my daughter's school. I'll be sending mine in summer uniform for as long as it's warm enough.

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 07:23

I've tried them on her and they fit now. Not sure in a year's time if they will though as she's quite tall and I got size 5 when she was 4 if that makes sense.

Yeah I can't imagine them with tights either. We used to wear the long white socks in the 90s with them. They still wear those now don't they but we used to have a hole pattern in them lol.

Thanks everyone you've been helpful. If September is still warm I'll put her in them with long socks. Her school cardigans are thick too so she will be warm. They wear kilts in the winter so she wears tights then.

DD wears her dress with tights in winter, she prefers combat shorts and a polo top or Tshirt , sometimes with tights underneath, and a sweatshirt.

Its a minefield every morning, as she plans what to wear the night before, then changes her mind. I just leave it all in her wardrobe now & let her get on with it.

She will not wear a cardigan, she hates them & thinks they look silly Hmm

I have obviously got a child problem and not a uniform problem Grin

We tend to buy whats needed all year round, from TU at Argos.

Devlocopop · 19/07/2020 07:24

You can get zipped summer uniform dresses (if they are the usual gingham type) much quicker than dealing with a lot of buttons.

My sons' primary had girls in summer dresses in September because it was warm enough to wear them.

There was no defined "summer" just if it is warm, wear the dress. Boys or girls wore shorts and the usual polo shirt. No jumper/cardigan.

lanthanum · 19/07/2020 07:25

I think if the school's information on uniform doesn't specify that summer uniform is "summer term only", it's fine for them to wear it in the autumn, especially if the weather is glorious.
It's probably worth making sure you've bought winter uniform, though, as the shops don't stock very much once the new year has started.

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 07:27

@StikkerBott

They are individuals at the end of the day. She knows what she likes which is great. There's two sisters at my daughter's school that are both tomboys (is this what we say now) I'll probably get told off sorry Blush. They have Marvel bags. Black trousers. They roll in on scooters. They are the only girls in the school in trousers. But it's fine isn't it. They obviously don't want to wear dresses and that should be accepted.

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 07:33

@lanthanum

Yes luckily her skirts still fit £24 each they were!! But I've got her some new polos and cardigans and shoes. They cost a fortune uniforms don't they.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 19/07/2020 07:51

I am sure i have read that schools have been told to be aware of parents having financial difficulties and not being a strict on uniform anyway so cannot see any school not allowing a summer dress in September

SteelyPanther · 19/07/2020 07:52

My kids school said that they have to go back in winter uniform.
Even though they’re all sweating if it’s nice when they go back 🙄

lilgreen · 19/07/2020 07:54

Depends on the weather as with any other getting dressed decision. I work in primary. If it’s warm, girls will be in summer dresses or school polo shirts and ankle socks with their skirts/pinafores.

lilgreen · 19/07/2020 07:55

Never heard of a school saying winter uniform is mandatory. That’s ridiculous. Do staff have to wear winter clothes? Grin
