To think she can wear these in September

Hi I know I'm not being unreasonable! But I want the traffic.

Do girls tend to go back to school in summer clothes in september? Or do they go back in the winter uniform? Or is it a mixture. What do you see normally?

My daughter is going into year one. I made the mistake of buying my daughter summer dresses last year in August for this summer. They were £7.50 each and still have labels in. I got her 3. I'm thinking do I sell them on eBay which is probably the wrong time of the year and I won't get £21 back. Or do I dress her in them in September if the suns out still?

Randomly this year I noted one girl wore a summer dress all year. I'm not sure why she didn't have the winter uniform. But she was the only one through the winter in a gingham dress.

It's too late for me to ask the school as they shut Friday.

Thank you 😊

If you've still got labels on I'd see if the shop would exchange for the next size up.

@lilgreen

Private schools have a certain image to maintain. Gotta look like you’re getting your money’s worth.Wink
Some of them seem deliberately chosen to make their pupils look as ugly and ridiculous as possible.
BadlydoneHelen · 19/07/2020 10:47

As someone up thread mentioned, come September primary schools are likely to have as many doors and windows open as possible to improve ventilation in classrooms so it won't be as sweltering in school as usual!

RedOasis · 19/07/2020 11:06

You never know when it’s going to be warm so use them when the weather permits. There’s no hard and fast rule I’m aware of.

MrsToothyBitch · 19/07/2020 11:42

@ThatLibraryMiss - it's the state convent school near me that has the horror of a uniform! It comes up regularly on local area threads as a brown checked eyesore in its own right- including the ridiculous cream puff socks. Most of the independent schools near me have nice uniforms.

lilgreen · 19/07/2020 11:49

Good point about ventilation.Get your dc thermal undies now because doors and windows will be open all winter according to our risk assessment.

Parker231 · 19/07/2020 11:53

Tights under trousers are good for the coldest days!

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 12:06

Yes good points about the doors and windows. Tbh I bet she's hardly there based on the amount of colds and fevers she gets in winter. Going to a horrible winter.

Does anyone know on a different subject if they need coronavirus tests if they will be sent to the house? Or do you travel somewhere for it? My mum's had a few done in hospital the last couple of weeks as she was in for something else. She said they are not pleasent and some nurses are better than others at it.

Parker231 · 19/07/2020 12:14

There are testing stations, some permanent and others mobile around the country. For those unable to travel there are home tests sent to you.

Newdaynewname1 · 19/07/2020 12:19

Depends on your school. many allow both uniforms all year, but don’t allow to mix (so summer dresses only with socks, not with tights, which makes sense)

twoshedsjackson · 19/07/2020 12:36

I agree with GeorgiePorgie29 about September weather. Throughout my teaching career it was a source of irritation that the weather was always glorious just after we'd gone back, with only one cold, rainy, exception. I was certainly polling up in the same lightweight clothing I'd had for the summer term, and was delighted, on retirement, to book a holiday for that period, because I could (!) it was cheaper, and I could be sure of good weather.
Are there any Facebook groups out there where you could confer with other parents? Do you have any contacts from her "meet the teachers" session? Most schools have a website, and you will probably be able to read past newsletters, which often have photos attached.
My guess is that they will be happy with smart and comfortable, and if nobody demurs at two little girls wearing trousers, they will be more concerned with settling in their new pupils happily.

Angel2702 · 19/07/2020 12:39

Ours is summer uniform from after Easter until end of summer term and winter uniform from September.

Parker231 · 19/07/2020 12:43

Everyone, it’s nothing to do with a state school which seasons uniform DC’s wear. It’s up to the parents. Some DC’s run around more than others and aren’t cold - pointless them being in a winter uniform on a nice October day.

mogtheexcellent · 19/07/2020 13:11

Yep 4 new summer dresses bought in sales last year as well.

DD wore them for the last 6 weeks of term and will wear them until October half term so long as warm enough. I pair with knee length socks on cooler days. I think they might last until 2021, if not I'll buy second hand from pta as Dd moves up to junior school september next year. I like to get my moneys worth. Grin

I always buy 2 with zips for PE days. Why they dont do larger less fiddly buttons on these dresses I'll never know Hmm

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 15:41

The buttons are fiddly. I've not bit fed zip ones but I'll remember them for next year! Thank you.

My DD always wore summer dresses right up until Autumn half term. She starts secondary school this year and there's no summer dress uniform, just short sleeved blouses, so she's going to miss them.

I always remember summer dresses at my own secondary school but they seem to be junior-only these days.

MrsToothyBitch · 19/07/2020 20:51

@Tanith when were you at school? I had a summer uniform at all girls secondary school in the 00s. I remember realising we were quite unusual- only one other school anywhere near us had a senior summer dress and we were definitely more into our summer uniform than they were. No where else seemed to have this though.

Tanith · 19/07/2020 22:49

MrsToothyBitch 80s Smile
We had the choice at our school: those of us who couldn't afford summer dresses stayed in blouses and skirts. I remember one particular teacher insisted we wear our ties if we'd "chosen" to stay in winter uniform Sad
Most girls did wear dresses, especially at the better off schools.

Maryann1975 · 20/07/2020 09:43

My kids school said that they have to go back in winter uniform.
Even though they’re all sweating if it’s nice when they go back

Is it not only the girls who have a different summer uniform though?

At our school, girls start wearing summer dresses anytime after Easter, but the boys are still in their polo shirts, with their normal trousers or a pair of shorts. Wearing School shorts is probably warmer than wearing a School skirt, so the boys get a bit of a bad deal really. They get to sweat what ever they wear.

In our house, gingham dresses Are for the summer term and they go back in September in polo shirts and grey skirts. There might be the odd girl in a summer dress, but never more than the odd one or two (2 form entry, so 30ish girls per year group).

Tights with summer dresses look dreadful, so please don’t go for that look!

Melonslicexx · 20/07/2020 10:24

We also never had a summer uniform at secondary 2000-2005 I was there. I'll base it around the weather then. If she gets a couple of wears out them then it's not wasted.

She's going in today for an hour to say bye to the teacher. So she will wear one today.

Uniform on teens where I live is much stricter compared to when i was at school. My nephew is at the local grammar school. It's very strict there and at the other local secondary. They wear blazers in class. They can't take them off unless head allows it on a very hot day. Personally I think it's cruel to not allow someone a choice whether they need a top layer on. I'm always warmer than my partner. He's often in a jumper and I'm in a t shirt.

Also very strict now on ties. Coat colours. Bag colours etc. It's good in some ways. But really not fair to say they can't take blazers off in the street etc.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/07/2020 10:31

Have you checked whether your school has an inset day today, so might still be open but not for pupils?

Pleasenodont · 20/07/2020 10:32

It tends to be quite warm in September so I’d say summer dresses are fine.

@Melonslicexx the school I went to for VI form had the jackets/blazers rule, but only when moving around school, in the canteen and in chapel- we were allowed to take jackets off for lessons and in our own common rooms etc. We had to wait for the headmaster to formally announce "shirt sleeve order" to be blazerless at all times. The Deputy head admitted that they didn't want people roasting in class but they also didn't want loads of abandoned or forgotten ££ bits of uniform or suit lying around, as well as the look of it.
