To think she can wear these in September

Hi I know I'm not being unreasonable! But I want the traffic.

Do girls tend to go back to school in summer clothes in september? Or do they go back in the winter uniform? Or is it a mixture. What do you see normally?

My daughter is going into year one. I made the mistake of buying my daughter summer dresses last year in August for this summer. They were £7.50 each and still have labels in. I got her 3. I'm thinking do I sell them on eBay which is probably the wrong time of the year and I won't get £21 back. Or do I dress her in them in September if the suns out still?

Randomly this year I noted one girl wore a summer dress all year. I'm not sure why she didn't have the winter uniform. But she was the only one through the winter in a gingham dress.

It's too late for me to ask the school as they shut Friday.

Thank you 😊

Our (private) school have a rule on this. Winter Uniform after October half term until Easter. Summer uniform is summer term and Autumn term until half term.
We have a ridiculous uniform though.

Private schools have a certain image to maintain. Gotta look like you’re getting your money’s worth.Wink

kitschplease · 19/07/2020 08:21

Ours wear summer uniform if they want until October half term. It's usually nicer weather then than in April!

SerenityNowwwww · 19/07/2020 08:24

Our school had a summer and winter uniform and we were supposed to switch at certain dates in the year.

One particularly cold spring and we were supposed to have the children in shorts and short sleeved polo shirts. I took DS in in his long trousers and the head stopped and asked where his shorts were - I said ‘It’s a wee bit cold right now but if you wear some I’m sure the kids will be happy to’.

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 08:34

It should be based on the weather shouldn't it. Especially in the UK. I mean look how rubbish it has been the last two weeks!

I used to wear my summer uniform until October half term unless it was freezing and I'd go back in my summer dress immediately after Easter - again, unless it was freezing. This was both junior and senior school for me; I was privately educated and we had a senior summer dress although you could wear the senior winter kit all year if you liked- we nearly all wore summer dress from April though, really. DM liked to get the value out of stuff unless the weather said otherwise.

When I worked in primary schools, plenty of girls came back in their ginghams and stayed in them! If they suit the weather, get the wear out of them Smile.

Subordinateclause · 19/07/2020 08:50

If it's a state school there almost certainly won't be a rule about it - usually either style of uniform is fine.

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 08:51

@MrsToothyBitch yeah that makes sense. I will put her in them for a few weeks unless it's cold. Yeah the kilts can be worn with tights or ankle or long socks too. I think the summer dresses are nice too. I know it's sad but I was looking forward to seeing her in them.

Some schools have rules about when you can wear summer or winter uniform but ours don't. Sometimes my DC choose to wear their summer dresses with tights & jumpers in the winter!

strawberrymilkshakemonkey · 19/07/2020 09:09

@After8itsgrownuptime

At our school it’s eithrr summer or winter uniform (parents choice based on daily weather) until October half term. After that it’s winter uniform
that seems quite strict. do they explain why they have that rule (presumably for conformity, but are there any exceptions for children whose parents explain their preferences in terms of comfort, ease of removal for PE, etc...?)
Parker231 · 19/07/2020 09:17

If it’s a state school they can wear winter or summer uniform when they want. So if there are a cold couple of weeks followed by a warmer spell, swap from winter to summer uniform. Girls can also wear trousers instead of a skirt/pinafore if they want.

Gogogadgetarms · 19/07/2020 09:19

Could you try and return them OP? If it’s a supermarket it’s likely still the same dress. If they are new with tags it should be ok. You might have to take a credit note but that might be better then only getting a couple of weeks wear out of them?

D4rwin · 19/07/2020 09:37

My son is currently wearing shorts all year round, I'm hoping that the school won't be imposing nonsense about that on 4 and 5 year olds!
This whole thing with "image" is counter productive as it just gives an uncaring/ impractical image. Schools insisting on blazers in hot weather etc. It doesn't look smart/ formal when they're red and sweaty.

ChaoticCatling · 19/07/2020 09:49

I'd also try to return them rather than use them for six weeks. I'd personally swap for an age six if they can be worn in September, or an age seven so you get two summers out of them otherwise.

Fedup21 · 19/07/2020 09:50

Summer dresses/shorts until October half term is fine.

GreenTulips · 19/07/2020 09:51

Buy summer dresses with zips much easier

coronabeer23 · 19/07/2020 09:51

Ours is summer until October half term and then again for the summer term.

SnickettyLemon · 19/07/2020 10:06

@Melonslicexx! I can't believe you paid £24 for a skirt fir a 4/5 year old in a state primary. Are they some special logo or pattern?

SnickettyLemon · 19/07/2020 10:06

^^ For, not fir!!

Rae36 · 19/07/2020 10:11

Either all year round in our school. Ds wears shorts all year long, some girls wear summer dresses, some wear grey skirts with shirt and tie all year long.
If there's not a date on your school website then I'd say they are just giving you examples of suitable uniform for hot and cold weather and you choose on any given day.

EssexGurl · 19/07/2020 10:14

At our primary you can wear any uniform during the year - but Head teacher says if girls need tights then they should be in winter uniform. Check your uniform policy.

FWIW my friend is a teacher there and said school was freezing recently as all windows and doors were open for ventilation - she said she would need to wear her ski gear in the winter if that continues.

Parker231 · 19/07/2020 10:16

If it’s cold why don’t the girls wear trousers?

Melonslicexx · 19/07/2020 10:22

Yeah the kilts have to be made by a supplier. You can't get them through supermarkets etc. It's disgusting really. I didn't know until she got a place how much they were. I was expecting £12 or something.

They don't stop girls having trousers but it's just not done. I've only ever seen two girls in them. The rest have tights and kilts.

It works out the boys uniform is much cheaper because the sweaters are are £3 cheaper than the girls cardigans.

It’s winter uniform from September here. Summer dresses after the Easter break. It’s usually glorious all through September as well Confused

Parker231 · 19/07/2020 10:25

@Melonslicexx - I suggest taking this up with the school governors (I am one). School uniform has to be affordable and easily available . There have been changes on this policy. Also a state school can’t dictate when summer and winter uniforms should be worn.
