To believe that it won't all be over by Christmas

I hope it will but really. Does anyone truly believe this or do you think that covid-19 is going to cause a lot of trouble this winter?
Yes it will all be back to normal by Christmas
No we are in for a tough winter.

The oxford trial has enrolled 10,000 people in the U.K. to phase 3.

The main purpose of that trial is to show the vaccine prevents you catching covid19, which has so far not been demonstrated.

Why do you think they’re bothering to trial this in the U.K. if we won’t have significant levels of covid19 in the community again?

They could have recruited more subjects in other countries (on top of those already recruiting in US, Brazil and South Africa). But they’ve kept with the U.K. subjects.

And on long term outcomes, google PHOSP. It is a long term trial run across 20 or so university hospitals to better understand the long term outcomes of covid19.

This virus transmits as a respiratory disease but it is becoming clear that it is a disease of the vascular system, causing clotting and damage in multiple organs.

No, I don’t think we will be back to normal by Christmas. Yes I do think there will be a second wave but don’t know how significant.

You can’t have it both ways, you can’t be “back to normal “ over winter in the U.K., (where we have a massively underfunded NHS, teetering on the brink every winter ) and simultaneously not have an overwhelmed NHS.

It’s got to be somewhere in between.

The vaccines and new inhaled beta interferon treatment are looking highly promising, along with the steroid treatment.

We know significantly more about this virus now than we did at the start.

Let's try and stay positive about things!!

There is a lot of focus on a vaccine when the new treatments are look promising too. @kittensarecute I sympathise entirely, there have been times when I wanted to die just to be out of it. My mum has a compromised immune system and I’ve seen her once since lockdown eased but I certainly can’t hug her for the foreseeable future but I agree with other posters who have said do what you can whilst you can even if it is just to spend all day in the great outdoors.

I don’t think we’ll be back to “normal” again because I think the situation has made many assess their lives and will prompt profound changes in the way they choose to live going forward. The economic situation is going to be terrible, no getting away from that but that some people will alter the way they were living may be a positive.

I’m very hopeful of the medical trials. Even if there is no vaccine, vastly improved treatments will significantly reduce covid’s impact. With vulnerable loved ones, I need to have faith in science.

Anyone thought that if we aren't part of Europe we won't be baling out the rest of Europe. We might be the first with a vaccine. The economy might bounce back. There might be some good news soon.

Indeed, I'm glad the UK won't be having to pay towards the 750 billion euro bailout for the Southern EU countries announced this morning.

pointythings · 21/07/2020 10:29

Kazzyhoward if the UK were still in the EU, it would be a recipient of some of this funding, since it is going to those countries in the EU worst hit by COVID-19. The UK is definitely high up on that list for some reason. Hmm

I was discussing this with a friend only yesterday.

We were saying, enjoy the time between now and September, because shit is going to hit the fan again in the autumn/winter!

By the same token, the UK will not be receiving any assistance from the EU when if it all goes to shit.
