To believe that it won't all be over by Christmas

I hope it will but really. Does anyone truly believe this or do you think that covid-19 is going to cause a lot of trouble this winter?
Yes it will all be back to normal by Christmas
No we are in for a tough winter.

OP posts:
JumpingJackFrost · 18/07/2020 23:11

Over by Christmas? No I don't think so, I think our numbers will rise again but:
Local lockdowns, track and trace, wearing masks, better knowledge of how it spreads, improved testing abilities, better understanding of how to treat it..... will all keep it to a more manageable level than last time.
Some things will change forever but then the world is constantly changing anyway.

Then I believe a vaccination program starting early next year will see us back to everyday life by this time next year at the latest.

IdblowJonSnow · 18/07/2020 23:12

Will it bollocks be normal by xmas.
At least I hope it won't as it means we can have xmas just in our immediate family which is how i like it. Wink

ilovesooty · 18/07/2020 23:14

@StillWeRise

Boris Johnson will just say any old thing that pops into his head to make himself look slightly less incompetent leaving slightly more scrupulous (the bar being very low) colleagues to come along after a respectful gap of a few days to either flat out deny he said what he said or somehow try and spin it that, no, that's not what he MEANT you fools. The 'easing of the lockdown' is just passing the buck onto businesses and local government and- actually, the individual - so that when numbers start to creep up again he can blame any or all of the above for being reckless. Countries where mask wearing was the norm have very low rates and have managed this much better. Here people are still acting like nothing is really wrong and their 'rights' are more important than protecting the vulnerable. It won't be over by Christmas (how stupid to tempt fate by alluding to that phrase) and our best bet is to do everything we can to protect ourselves and our families because we sure as hell can't rely on that bunch of incompetents to protect us.
Spot on. He's bored with it, with the responsibility and it shows.

Of course it won't be over. We will have to get used to living differently for a pretty long time. We will have to accept it and adapt.

And of course in terms of the economic ramifications we will soon have a probable no deal Brexit to add to the mix.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 18/07/2020 23:15

@StillWeRise

Nicely said as spot on in agreement!

Also add there will be no cure, vaccine or any guarantee or more hopeful life saving medical intervention. Never has been with previous coronavirus like SARs and MERs etc so don't buy into the political spin as if none of them every told untruths, u turned or outright hypocritical contradictory messaging and now passing the buck to general public who are more concerned about civil liberties and human rights than giving due respect to the 50k and growing number less unfortunate and don't have any say.

I ask the genuinely anti PPE face coverings unmasked - would you change your mind if you or someone you love inadvertently got infected?

managedmis · 18/07/2020 23:18

No way. It'll be next summer

GrolliffetheDragon · 18/07/2020 23:26

they will twist it to become about the “lasting effects” (this is already being prepped in the media) or the threat of new strains.

DH had it in March, mild in that he didn't go to hospital. Still not fully recovered, so personally I'm not doubting that it can have lasting effects, but you carry on with your conspiracy theories if it makes you feel better.

frasersmummy · 18/07/2020 23:26

So for those of you saying we will have to get used to the new norm..

How long do you think social distancing from other households will last

How long before we can celebrate birthdays anniversaries Christmas etc properly

Our local council have already cancelled our Xmas lights switch on

It just all seems so sad and depressing.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 18/07/2020 23:28

@leaannnb I'm in the US and I think one of the big reasons its running rampant in the South and West is because when its that hot people go inside to the AC. The bars were all open and young people were flocking to them. I live in one of only 2 states that is actually reducing its numbers. For the most part we wear masks and socially distance. Our bar/restaurants are still at 50% indoor capacity. Its also not as hot here so I think we spend more time outside then people in the south and west

whereistherum · 18/07/2020 23:29

I had hopes that the Olympics would still be taking place next year. As soon as Boris came out with his Christmas speech, my hope left me.

I am in the world of taking what he says, and doubling the length of time he says

TheMurk · 18/07/2020 23:32

@GrolliffetheDragon yes and I had mumps as an adult in my 20s. I still have issues from it more than 20 years later.

But you’ll be hard pushed to find a newspaper article about the lasting effects of mumps.

Alicatz66 · 18/07/2020 23:36

I don't think there will be an effective vaccine .. I also think the media are loving all the doom ... 2 choices .. stay in for ever, or slap on a mask and get on with life

ilovesooty · 18/07/2020 23:37

I think it's just about impossible to put any estimate on it quite honestly . We may realistically have to get used to some very long lasting changes.
gingganggooleywotsit · 18/07/2020 23:43

@IdblowJonSnow bit selfish! You hope a global pandemic that is killing people daily will continue, just so you don't have to socialise? I know you were joking, but I'm just sick of people that seem to be relishing the situation and wish we could be in lockdown forever!

IdblowJonSnow · 18/07/2020 23:47

Yes I was joking and I dont wish for perpetual lockdown (just a tiny one over xmas week).
Also my daft jokes dont actually impact on reality so not really selfish!

Griselda1 · 18/07/2020 23:48

All the vulnerable people coming out of shielding in the UK at the end of this month will emerge into such a confusing scene.
It's been all about protecting my elderly parents and being grateful they're still alive but naively I always thought of there being an end date. I shopped today in our local high street and the gaps left by the shops who won't reopen are a real reminder of how difficult it's all going to be.

Rigorousyetcalm · 18/07/2020 23:51

I can’t see vaccine being available until this time next year (work in Pharma). Trial participants need to be exposed to the disease and it might be pretty hard if you are taking part in the trial in the UK. They either need to directly challenge the trial participants with COVID-19 or start opening centres in badly hit areas worldwide. An end by Christmas is a pipe dream.

netflixismysidehustle · 18/07/2020 23:55

Yanbu
I think people will hug, eat at the table together etc regardless of the winter guidelines so it will be normal in that sense.

OhTheRoses · 19/07/2020 00:00

The way we have approached it needs to be over by Christmas. The impact of a totally screwed economy will be far greater than the virus. The risk of death is infinitesimal and already there are better ways of treating it and knowledge about its management is increasing by the day.

Normality means learning to live with it, like we learnt to live with HIV in the 80s; and before that our grandparents lived with polio, etc.. We need to back at work and back to normal and being productive again because the consequences of not doing that are far far worse than the virus.

I do think we needed to lock down, but I think people should have been getting back to work after six weeks and the schools should have gone back after VE Day.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 19/07/2020 00:02

Oh I really do wish it’d be over by Christmas!!....but every doc I know, (well 8ish), has suggested a basic prep for late autumn😞. To be honest, even if Corona is vaguely contained we’ve got to get through Brexit yet.... I do rather worry that Boris (show pony) is already bored and will just quit when he’s had enough (which he’ll portray as some gallant step down).... doomed we are Mr Mannering🙈

I am one of the shielding ones and I doubt my life is going to be back to normal for a very long time, if ever. I have two very high risk factors, so have to be careful. There is debate whether I need to shield past August, they can't decide, but when I switch my meds in a month or so, I will have to as far as possible. My job is public facing and I have a disability, so am restricted as to what I can actually do. Other people can go back to normal potentially, but I don't see how the shielding people can with any confidence.

Our private bars are not open. Just ones attached to restaurants. People are not staying in the A.C. (God do I wish we could) but we aren't. We have a high tourism industry and people are from.across the nation flock there every year. They are on the beaches and boardwalks most with masks on only taking them off to eat 2here are restaurants are only at 50 percent capacity.

I wish I could show you An image of my lungs. Love long damage due to Covid
Whichoneofyoudidthat · 19/07/2020 00:11

Not a chance. Rolling restrictions until there’s a vaccine, I’m afraid. Forget about long haul travel.

RhianFuckingMorris · 19/07/2020 00:15

Not a fucking chance.
I'm pretty certain as we go into cold winter with no shut down and no heatwave to get people outside plus social distancing fatigue and get togethers at Christmas it will spread like wildfire and the inevitable second wave will make what we've just experienced seem like a breeze.

I hope I'm wrong but sadly i think the winter of 2020/21 will be a fucking grim one.
