Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?

Friends! Bloody awful and unfunny.

Babyg1995 · 18/07/2020 21:53

Friends

Remembering39862 · 18/07/2020 21:54

Thank god it wasn’t just me that didn’t like Normal People! Everyone was raving that it was the best drama of the decade and I was just Confused

Succession, American Horror Story, Riverdale, and Girls also make my overrated list.

Germolenequeen · 18/07/2020 21:55

Mrs Browns Boys. Lowest common denominator shit.

How anyone could put Dad's Army on their list is beyond me 🤨 classic comedy gold

HunterAngel · 18/07/2020 21:56

Game of thrones. Really wanted to like it but got four episodes into the second series and realised I still couldn’t tell half the characters apart, not a single plot line made sense and there was really just no point continuing

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 18/07/2020 22:02

Game of Thrones -really not sure what it was, it’s like some teenage boy had been reading Lord of the rings, whilst wanking off to some dodgey 80s porn when he was supposed to be doing his history homework on Henry II!

MillicentMartha · 18/07/2020 22:03

@cariadlet, re Being Human, I loved it, for the first few seasons. Then they changed the cast and I couldn’t be bothered anymore.

janetmendoza · 18/07/2020 22:05

Santa Clarita diet

Samcro · 18/07/2020 22:05

Cant bear, Rick and Morty, Seinfeld lots of others.

theAntsareMyFriends · 18/07/2020 22:16

@Lifeisgenerallyfun that is the perfect description. A bit of history, a bit of porn and some fantasy with some added rape and torture. I still can't work out how it became so huge.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 18/07/2020 22:23

There are some weird choices on this thread given that it's asking about overrated TV shows. Surely no one is saying that Love Island and Keeping Up With The Kardashians and I'm a Celeb are good TV? They're popular but everyone realises that they are utter drivel, surely? No one is "rating" them in a way which means anyone might watch and think: God, this is meant to be the drama of the decade but I think it's shite. Everyone knows it's shite!

Quite different from, say, Mad Men which is critically acclaimed and thus might genuinely leave some viewers wondering what all the fuss is about.

I loved Mad Men but couldn't get into The Wire at all.

Banana0pancakes · 18/07/2020 22:26

Love island. Tried to watch but don't understand the appeal at all.

Tellmetruth4 · 18/07/2020 22:27

Sopranos.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/07/2020 22:27

Misfits

DH has been binge watching loads of TV (he WFH so early starts and no commute)

I tolerated it when Robert Sheehan was in it (though his characer is an arse) and even more when Craig Parkinson was in it .

But then the last series was just people shagging in toilets and no actual storylines Hmm

Ponoka7 · 18/07/2020 22:30

I'd like to add sex in the city. I was happily single and enjoying life and thought that's what the show was about. It was the opposite of its description.

A lot of the others never appealed to me, so I didn't give them a go, except for American Horror and I wasn't keen.

Ponoka7 · 18/07/2020 22:32

In Broadchurch's favour, it was seven years ago and good at the time. But I'm a David Tennant fan.

I agree. It's the annoying thing that always happens with threads like these. I didn't enjoy either Normal People, which I sat through all of, or the episodes of Love Island which I watched on holiday with SIL. But only Normal People is an "overrated" show. Love Island is exactly what it sets out to be.

PuppyMonkey · 18/07/2020 22:37

I watched the first series of Peaky Blinders and thought it was fairly ok and stylish and a bit different. But it has been completely unwatchable since then. I can't understand the love.

Also hated Doctor Foster, so unbelievably cringey. But I love Suranne Jones in Gentleman Jack - if that proves anything???

And Luther is ridiculous and not in a funny way. Just crappy silly nonsense.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 18/07/2020 22:48

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross it’s because I block those shows from my mind, I get a nervous tick if I think about them. I prefer to think neither they or the people that watch them exist. I refuse to consider humanity has sunk to that level.

NotyouGuillermo · 18/07/2020 22:56

The inbetweeners and Outlander

Helendee · 18/07/2020 23:12

Any US ‘Comedy’, so puerile!
I hate them.

NameChange84 · 18/07/2020 23:14
