Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?

And GOT, obviously. Still waiting for GRR Martin to write those last books.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/07/2020 20:59

Friends. Utter tosh.

Farheatarse · 18/07/2020 21:02

Strictly Come Dancing. Exactly the same stories every year, just with different people.

Normal People, really dull!

Fleabag and Killing Eve, okay but not amazing, I’ve not finished either yet.

Anything with Olivia Colman, I agree with the previous comment on her ac
@annabel85 I genuinely didn't realise Mrs Brown's Boys was the BBC'S flagship sitcom. I've never watched it, it looks completely shit.
One of the most watched shows on telly last decade. Got up to 11 million in viewing figures and won a BAFTA for best sitcom. It is utter shite.

Farheatarse · 18/07/2020 21:03

..her acting, taking quickly and grimacing a lot is not acting...

SkyeIsPink · 18/07/2020 21:06

I hate to say it, because I really wanted to enjoy it ...

Noughts and crosses

KurriKawari · 18/07/2020 21:07

Oh, Olivia Coleman ruined the Crown :(

Floatyboat · 18/07/2020 21:07

This thread is making me angry. Mad men is an incredible show. If you don't like it you don't like character driven television. Which is a subjective thing and that's fine. But it is not overrated. It just isn't for you.

I loved breaking bad though I can conceed maybe for a couple of years people did get a bit too excited about it.

hypernova · 18/07/2020 21:09

Yes, The Wire. Could not get into it.

Sons of Anarchy. I did watch it all but I was really preserving towards the end. The storyline where they go to Ireland was a hard slog to get through.

MilaRos · 18/07/2020 21:10

Tiger king!

KurriKawari · 18/07/2020 21:10

This thread is making me want to watch Mad Men again, absolute perfection.

annabel85 · 18/07/2020 21:10

This thread is making me angry. Mad men is an incredible show.

The Wire, Sopranos and Mad Men are the holy trinity of 2000s TV. Breaking Bad up there as well.

OohKittens · 18/07/2020 21:12

Friday night dinner. Barely even got a smile out of me. Silly, immature humour.

PolloDePrimavera · 18/07/2020 21:21

So glad so many of you said Friends! I honestly thought I was the only person on the planet who thought it was contrived shite.
Loved Fleabag but admittedly gave it another go. Gave up 3/4 through Normal People, I couldn't understand why they didn't just get together!

Floatyboat · 18/07/2020 21:26

I don't think anyone thinks friends is amazing TV do they? Its more just quite funny, easy watch comedy which now has sentimental comfort value for people.

cariadlet · 18/07/2020 21:31

@MillicentMartha Being Human is probably my all time favourite tv show. I think it's brilliant: drama, comedy, pathos and some downright scary bits.

What didn't you like about it?

Fishypants · 18/07/2020 21:35

Friends.

I really couldn't see the humour in 6 beautiful people, living in huge apartments, most with amazing jobs, complaining about things like getting a gold chain for their birthday. Seemed completely frivolous, there was no underlying angst from which a lot of comedy is derived. I always thought it was like a light romantic drama than a laugh out loud comedy.

wanderings · 18/07/2020 21:36

I'm a celebrity - Kew Gardens looked more realistic than the jungle on that show.

I'm glad to see the Crystal Maze is not listed here! Wink

theAntsareMyFriends · 18/07/2020 21:38

Downton Abbey. It was so stilted and predictable with the occasional overly sweet emotional bits thrown in. Maggie Smith, who was the best thing in it, just became a caricature of the 'acidic old lady' trope. I could never work out why people liked it but I diligently watched it hoping that at some point I would love it but never did.

Belgravia was worse but at least that wasn't highly rated.

I loved the early series of Poldark but totally lost interest by the end.

I did love Killing Eve though and also Olivia Coleman so my judgement may not be up to much!

FuzzyPuffling · 18/07/2020 21:43

Poldark was a travesty.
The books are a wonderful treat : the TV series a load of made up piffle. The 70s series was a bit better, but poor Winston Graham even hated that.

Livpool · 18/07/2020 21:43

Breaking Bad

I got through about 4 episodes
