Daily Mail advertising takeover

HarlinRay · 18/07/2020 18:19

Posting in AIBU for visibility. I turned off my adblocker temporarily to debug another site I'm working on and forgot to turn it back on - and saw that Mumsnet is running a massive Daily Mail advertising takeover. Just in case anyone else is using an adblocker as well and might want to make sure not to support a company that takes advertising money from a fascist rag, thought I'd put this out there.

I am trying to decide whether just to delete entirely as this is a bit of a last straw, or if the fact that I always normally block all the ads anyway means it doesn't matter so much. Maybe MN HQ will make the decision for me, for pointing out that their advertising partner is, indeed, fascist.

So you're on mumsnet using the facilities but bemoaning the fact the service that is free to use takes advertising from a company you don't like in order to survive?

Lots of people read the mail. You don't have to.

So you are unreasonable. And a bit goady. And small minded.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/07/2020 19:05

Is it the changing ads? Because they are based on your searches

heartsonacake · 18/07/2020 19:10

Wow, you need to calm down.

PleasantVille · 18/07/2020 19:13

Unless this has just started today I've never seen a DM advert, mine is all face masks and shoes.

HarlinRay · 18/07/2020 19:14

@Unhomme but I’m not a fascist so I feel like I’m doing ok. I have every right to complain if a service I use takes advertising money from an immoral and dangerous company. I may stop using MN over it, I’m still thinking it over. I thought there might be other people (clearly not you) who would appreciate the info if they didn’t realise it already.

@SchrodingersImmigrant it’s a site takeover. Have a look on desktop and you’ll see what that entails.

😂😂😂

ShinyFootball · 18/07/2020 19:30

My adverts are all computers.

My guess is you've been googling daily mail Grin

Unhomme · 18/07/2020 19:37

This isn't the airport, you don't need to announce your departure...

And as others have mentioned, programmsrivmc advertising is generally based on your browsing history and online profile...which suggests you fit the bill as a Mail target...

GinDaddyRedux · 18/07/2020 19:38

Maybe OP, just maybe, Mumsnet's exec team and marketing people have recognised that a fair few MN readers are either of the target demographic or actual readership of the Mail itself. Never mind the vocal lefties and the SW London chatterati, the reality of well over half the posts on here indicate serious Mail synergies in subject matter, attitude to society, opinion on housing market, sense of feeling middle class etc etc.

Mumsnet doesn't have the advertising real estate of an online newspaper and it is free. If you don't like the partners it chooses re advertising, then you're welcome to sign up to MN Premium.

UntamedWisteria · 18/07/2020 19:40

YANBU OP.

Koelner · 18/07/2020 19:45

If the ad's have a small triangle in the corner, MN have little to no control as they come from your google search history. For example, mine are mobile and car ads as that's what I've been searching for recently.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/07/2020 19:48

They need the money to run the site.

Also, no one makes you stay if you are uncomfortable.

torquewench · 18/07/2020 19:51

I cant read anything on the DM site, it wont let me because I have an adblocker.

Also, Im fine with people having opinions that differ from mine.

BoggledBudgie · 18/07/2020 19:53

I thought the ads were based on your search history and/or whatever keywords in the thread there is? I clicked on a thread about kids chores and a fair few posters were mentioning their kids loaded the dishwasher, and the ads were for dishwashers

Chloemol · 18/07/2020 19:58

Wow, just wow, what a nasty little rant of a post

Do us all a favour and leave MN then

justanotherneighinparadise · 18/07/2020 20:02

Then leave OP.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/07/2020 20:07

We must stop the charade.

Everyone on MN reads DailyMail once in a while!

It's all lie that they don't. There are threads starting with "I don't read the shitrag, but look at this article I saw". Liiiiieeeeeesssssss.
Like MN chicken.

Liessssssssssss🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥🤥

Charleyhorses · 18/07/2020 20:17

I think it's naive to believe that there isn't a huge cross over in the visitors to both sites.

HarlinRay · 18/07/2020 20:18

There are two types of ads on mn- the targeted ads that you usually see among other content, and the big banners and sidebars on the homepage which are the same for everyone (unless you’re Adblocking). I am sure lots of users never see the takeovers as they never go to the homepage but rather straight to boards. Anyway. The fact that some people here are calling me ‘nasty’ for stating the clear fact that the mail is fascist really shows how much the users of this site have changed in the last couple of years. It’s absolutely shocking.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/07/2020 20:20

I click on the Mail.

Fuck, I even read the Guardian.

Judge me now.

HarlinRay · 18/07/2020 20:21

@SchrodingersImmigrant your emojis are cute but I honestly don’t ever click the mail- if I get there by accident I’m gone so fast your head would spin. If there is something on the mail that’s sparking lots of discussion that I feel I need to read to understand, i use archive.org to see a copy of the page without giving any traffic to the mail. It’s habit by now.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/07/2020 20:23

I honestly never knew there is a lying emoji and I am now made up I found it😂

I love DM dramatics. So armageddony.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/07/2020 20:26

Me too, Chardonnays

torquewench · 18/07/2020 20:37

Which news publications do you approve of, OP? The Morning Star? Anything under the Reach group? Do tell us. FWIW my opinion is that all online MSM newspapers are clickbaity ad-filled trash that take too long to load for me to be arsed reading them. Is that the correct opinion to have?

donquixotedelamancha · 18/07/2020 20:38

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
