Everytime I go round a friend's house and they bring out the pims I can't have it because virtually all lemonade now has sweeteners in. People say they taste like crap and gives me such a bad headache.

@xolotltezcatlopoca

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken , you picked a wrong exemple, my dc is allergic to wheat, so we have gluten free/wheat free pasta all the time. And as for him, that's only choice, otherwise he will likely to die.
Alltheusernames' point is perfectly valid. Your child's gluten intolerance doesn't in anyway negate Alltheuser's analogy.
Intelinside57 · 18/07/2020 16:03

I agree with you Op.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 18/07/2020 16:04

Haven’t rttft, but Waitrose clear lemonade is untouched by sweeteners. However, I am currently not talking to ds2 as he nicked my only bottle that I’d been hoarding. (We live a long way from a Waitrose)

ShineyMcShine · 18/07/2020 16:04

Funny this post is up. I'm drinking Ribena for the first time in years and its rank.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/07/2020 16:04

At home I drink Rocks.

Pubs can be very difficult to get anything without sweetners, unless your're advocating drinking and driving, which I don't. Often the choice is down to tiny extortionate glass bottles of orange juice or coke. I'm hardly going to keep the pub trading on a pint of tap water.

Strongbow also has sweetners. The other thing is that it's difficult to check.

I can get away with a weak lime and soda as it's supposed to be sour and is less sweetened to a sweet taste, but that's a risky strategy depending on the quanity of lime.

People don't seem to realise that diet or not, there is very little choice of sweetner free products, and those that are, are premium products costing many times more regardless of the sugar tax.

If brands like Ribena, Vimto, Schweps, R Whites etc still did original recipe options without sweetners, I would still buy them. And the whole purpose of Lucozade was to be an energy drink for sports or ill people which is purposeless now.

I'm another that gets the headaches, cloying after taste for hours and increased thirst. Stevia just tastes like soap.

(And yes, I can taste palm oiled "chocolate" thank goodness for Aldi Moser Roth)

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou

Also, drinks with sugar in don’t automatically cause obesity. DH and I grew up with full sugar pop and squash and so have our DCs. We all also drink water and milk (and other things) as part of a VARIED DIET. DH and I now in our fifties and both slim and healthy BMI. Same with DCs. Compared to most people of their ages they are skinny but would have simply been considered healthy in the 70s before everything became sugar free.
This with knobs on, because if we had pop, it was occasionally and we didn’t have huge glasses of it. Same with sweets, chocolates and biscuits. Moderation in all things.

My "skinny" normal weight DCs drink full sugar, and a lot of tap water. Knowing that full sugar is something to be wary of, they have less frequent full sugar than people tend to with "diet" or the fake diet versions.
Boudicabooandbulldogs · 18/07/2020 16:10

It’s not great for people with intestinal issues either. I have crohns and now can’t touch any fizzy drink otherwise I’m on the toilet for hours. Artificial sweeteners not only change the taste, they can make many people quite ill

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/07/2020 16:10

@zonkin

FGS, not all drinks have sweeteners in them instead of sugar. And yes, drinking either the full sugar or sweetener one is crap for your health, and in the case of the former, your teeth.
Ribena? Lucozade? Iron Brew? Sprite? 7 Up? I could go on....

All of those contain artificial sweeteners it’s not just the diet versions any more.

Teeth? My teeth are fine! In my fifties, grew up with full sugar drinks (in moderation) as have my DCs, no fillings.... my teeth are more likely to be damaged by the vomiting that occurs if I accidentally drink artificially sweetened drinks... usually when the pub has assured me that what they are serving is sweetener free......

justasking111 · 18/07/2020 16:11

Rocks here, you know it is good because it grows mould unless kept cold once opened Grin

JKRisagryff · 18/07/2020 16:11

I didn’t know there were sweeteners in non-diet drinks! I’ve always been a diet person anyway as I don’t like sugary drinks, they taste too cloying to me but agree it’s good to have a choice!

woodlandwalker · 18/07/2020 16:12

I have the same issue with sweeteners. They make the drink taste awful and leave a nasty taste for the rest of the day.

cantkeepawayforever · 18/07/2020 16:14

Bottlegreen drinks are sweetener free - we drink them, or pure fruit juice, with fizzy water as a 'treat' drink.

You can make your own orange / lemon squash (or elderflower cordial, at certain times of the year). My mum used to make it, decades ago, because of the very exciting colouring agents used in 'shop bought' squashes.

wewillmeetagain · 18/07/2020 16:16

My daughter ( who is now 16) had lots of food intolerances as a young child. Her paediatric doctor told me years ago that we should never feed her AS or eat them ourselves as they are notorious for causing horrible side effects and are very bad for you. He even told us the encourage obesity because they don't trigger the brain to know we are full like real sugar does so literally cause people to eat more. He also believed we are storing up huge cancer problems for the future by putting AS in everything. He said that a little bit of sugar every so often was much better than AS all the time.

horsemadgal · 18/07/2020 16:18

I'll never forgive him for the loss of Ricicles Sad

bruffin · 18/07/2020 16:21

So if you know the place doesn't offer anything you like, then go somewhere else.
Your not getting it are youHmm The problem is they dont do alternatives in pubs very often. Luckily i really like fevertree tonic now so drink one of those by itself.

zonkin · 18/07/2020 16:21

If you want to drink the crap that is Ribena, Irn Blu, etc then you'll just have to accept the sweeteners. Whinging on here won't change anything. Get in touch with the manufacturers maybe? Start a campaign?

Don't kid yourself that the AS or sugar version are good for you.

Get a grip no one is saying sugar drinks are healthy. Why invent a pov that no one has ever said. Weird.

Some of fruit shoots for kids now too. Yuuuuuck. They only have them if they are out and it comes with something. How they drink it I don't know.

They took the sugar out of calpol too. The new version has a strong yucky taste now too. I know that's been the case for a few years.

I used to occasionally enjoy 7up. But not had it since.

Also I remember the Jones pop van coming around when we were kids. We had cherryade and dandelion and burdock. Such a nice treat.

GabsAlot · 18/07/2020 16:27

i hate diet drinks they taste like crap and aspartame is no better than sugar and one day will be banned

then what

he sticks his oar in everythng he wanted 241 pizzas banned aswell-i wont be told what to eat

KisstheTeapot14 · 18/07/2020 16:27

His heart is in the righ place but I won't drink things with sweeteners in - worse than sugar (in moderation) for your health I think. They also taste vile. Like my whole body revolts at the taste. Steviol is OK - plant based so not so bad and I can't detect it in taste. We should campaign for more stuff with that in I reckon.

Have to buy top shelf expensive lemonade these days but its a treat so hey ho.

Blame the manufacturers not JO.

zonkin · 18/07/2020 16:27

Not really weird. The market doesn't want sugar in drinks so the manufacturers adapted. That's just he way it is and it isn't really JO's fault. Get a grip yourself.

Manzana · 18/07/2020 16:28

@skodadoda, sainsbury still do squash with sugar, the only ones I’ve found so far, a bit more expensive than sugar free obviously

zonkin · 18/07/2020 16:28

It's called business......and profit.....

KisstheTeapot14 · 18/07/2020 16:32

Rocks here too. Hot or cold blackcurrant. Not cheap but decent ingredients.

I get a ginger cordial too.

Fizzy water added if I want ginger beer
