To still be pissed of by Jamie Oliver

Everytime I go round a friend's house and they bring out the pims I can't have it because virtually all lemonade now has sweeteners in. People say they taste like crap and gives me such a bad headache.

@sergeilavrov

YANBU.

He has a really wide tongue as well.

🤣🤣
CarolVordermansArse · 18/07/2020 14:00

The 'prick with the fork has a lot to answer for'.
Sweeteners are foul and I have given up most soft drinks because of the side effects.

BearSoFair · 18/07/2020 14:00

YANBU but it's turkey twizzlers I'm still pissed off about!

marysuzairn · 18/07/2020 14:00

I don't believe anyone has a sweetener drink and think it tastes the same..

It's not resisting change to not want something to be way less yummy Hmm

'prick with a fork'

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/07/2020 14:02

I can't have sweeteners, they give me hideous headaches. I know the effect of sugar, god know what mass consumption of all these artificial sweetness is going to be.

TeacherKS1 · 18/07/2020 14:03

Waitrose own brand lemonade has no sweetener in it.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2020 14:03

I remember when they first changed sprite

My god it was awful. So dry..it was supposed to hydrate me not leave my mouth feel like I’ve been licking walls.

They have adjusted it now to where I can drink it happily but no, it isn’t the same as it used to be

I wasn’t happy with the sugar tax but I would prefer to pay extra for the original item than have sweetened crap

GreytExpectations · 18/07/2020 14:04

Well in his defense, his campaign wouldn't have worked if loads of people didn't agree and support it so you should probably blame all of them too instead of being irrationally angry to the point of personally insulting someone you don't even know.

Also, I'd love to know where this toilet cleaner soft drink is as I've never asted anything like that description. The over reactions on this thread have given me a good chuckle, thanks!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 18/07/2020 14:04

I often avoid cocktails because they only come with sugary mixers, rather than low calorie ones.
I love waitrose no added sugar ginger beer (especially good with rhubarb gin).
Don't have any problem with artificial sweeteners.

SmudgeButt · 18/07/2020 14:05

I'm with you on this all the way. I can no longer find cranberry juice or many other juices that are drinkable. I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for a normal version of things but the only thing that has happened is there are now some incredibly expensive "craft" fizzy drinks that are being sold as healthy due to the fact there's nothing articificial. £5 for 4 x 250 ml tins of "real cola"? Not likely, even if I like cola to begin with!

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/07/2020 14:06

It obviously is a fact in that it happens Grey.Hmm

Baaaahhhhh · 18/07/2020 14:06

All that has happened is that many brands now offer "traditional" recipes for which you have to pay the sugar tax, but at least you get a nice drink.

sonicbook · 18/07/2020 14:07

Anything replacing something natural with something so disgustingly artificial as sweetener is a disgrace. People should be allowed to make up their own minds. It was a disgrace. I can only assume, given the enthusiasm with which drinks companies have stuck to it, that there's some financial gain to be had from it as well.

GreytExpectations · 18/07/2020 14:09

Not really...its an opinion, they are different to facts Hmm
PenelopePitstop49 · 18/07/2020 14:09

I'm t2 diabetic, so have to avoid sugar but I do hate overly sweetened products. I bought some reduced sugar chocolate hazelnut spread this week in great excitement, but didn't read the label - it's 100 times sweeter than Nutella and left a really nasty bitter aftertaste.

We don't need all this sugary tasting crap. Low sugar and sweetener free is fine for me.

Leostar · 18/07/2020 14:10

What gets me is who knows what the long term effects of artificial sweeteners are?

I'd much rather have a little bit of sugar now and the rather than artificial chemicals every and all day.

My dad is a right sugar-phobe and it drives me nuts!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 18/07/2020 14:10

I'm interested to hear that so many other people hate artificial sweeteners. I can't stand them. They mostly taste like saccharine used to when I tried it as a kid. Nasty bitter aftertaste. But clearly most people don't notice them. I have to be very careful not to buy stuff with these sweeteners - they're put in so many products. Yuck.

marysuzairn · 18/07/2020 14:10

The campaign was so flawed. It won't be helping public health.

Should have been a long term strategy to reduce sugar by a few percent a year. Not in on swoop replace sugar with sweetners to be just as sweet.

Good tip about Waitrose though !

I think the ones with "Stevia" are just about OK, but not the other chemically ones.

EnterNight · 18/07/2020 14:12

I have an allergy to aspartame. Gives me blinding headaches and stomach pain for 24 hours.

I cant have anything with mixers in pubs because all lemonades in them contain it.
I cant have a slushy when out because many of them do.
Pizza Hut will serve me all the beer I want, but I cant get full fat drinks.
Cinema chains, KFC, Subway and a few other places no longer serve full fat.

Irritating to say the least. I love being in the USA as I don't need to think and double check anything.

Mintjulia · 18/07/2020 14:13

Just take a bottle of Sainsbury’s classic lemonade. Much easier than getting all uptight Smile

TheFuckingDogs · 18/07/2020 14:13

I don’t think JO did this thinking people would all switch to the cancerous AS drinks, he genuinely wanted to help tackle childhood obesity.
There’s really nothing wrong with kids drinking water most of the time.
As for boozy drinks just spend a bit more for the decent tonics etc hardly anyone on MN drinks more than a thimble full of gin a year anyway so it won’t cost that much 🙄

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/07/2020 14:13

I’m with the OP on this one. I haven’t been able to have lemonade for a very long time. I have IBS, artificial sweeteners give me a very upset stomach (to put it delicately). I don’t mind paying more but what actually happened is that the manufacturers just changed recipe.... I’m now very limited on what soft drinks I can have. In fact I now drink more Coca Cola than I ever used to because it is one of the few readily available options!

I would love to have a face to face with Jamie Oliver and tell him how his campaigning has had a detrimental effect on me.

At least wine is unaffected! 🍷

At best those are drinkable but they're not that nice either. better than aspartame, but that's a very low bar
