Everytime I go round a friend's house and they bring out the pims I can't have it because virtually all lemonade now has sweeteners in. People say they taste like crap and gives me such a bad headache.

OP posts:

That's a bonkers way to look at it that your choice is to not have a choice at all

@Camomila

(bring some sprite with you)
Regular sprite now contains sweeteners.....
AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 18/07/2020 15:46

I agree! I only have a fizzy drink maybe twice a month so it used to be a real treat. Now they all taste like chemicals.

Analcolico · 18/07/2020 15:46

Sweeteners taste disgusting and leave an aftertaste that lasts all night

This, a million times over.

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:48

bruffin, I think different. You go to the pub and expect to drink something offered there. If you go to Italian restaurant, you don't expect to have Sushi, or Vietnamese spring rolls. So if you know the place doesn't offer anything you like, then go somewhere else.

And Soubriquet, I have ordered tea in the pub before, it was totally fine, though I am a drinker so I normally drink wine or beer.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2020 15:50

I only order tea in ones where I can sort it myself in pubs.

That way I get the ideal sugar ratio AND the strength of tea I want

totallyyesno · 18/07/2020 15:50

I agree OP. I only buy sweetener-free drinks and in the UK it's getting impossible to find them.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/07/2020 15:52

@xolotltezcatlopoca

You have a choice not to have a drink, or drink with/without an artificial sweeteners. Obesity is huge problem. I have a feeling, many won't mind so much as they can get pissed.
You don’t always have a choice. A while ago (before lockdown) I was at a pub with friends. I was driving. My “choice” for an alcohol free Drink with no artificial sweeteners? Tea, coffee or water! Even the “fresh” orange juice had sweeteners in it!

No, it’s be like going to an Italian and ordering pasta, to find out they now only serve gluten free pasta because of a wheat tax. Of course gluten free should be an option for those who need it, but it shouldn’t be all that is offered. It doesn’t taste the same and you’d be within your rights to be annoyed.
MiddlesexGirl · 18/07/2020 15:55

As someone who drank sugary drinks up until about 5 years ago but now drinks the diet versions you are being unreasonable. It took a while to get used to the taste but now I can't bear the sugary versions.

And as it really is quite clear that part of the nation's obesity and diabetes crisis is because of sugar, I'm fully behind the sugar tax.

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:55

The pub I went gave me a teapot and sugar/ milk separately, so there were no problem. What's the point, you have a choice, after all. To go to the place you can sort it out or not. Grin

SuckingDieselFella · 18/07/2020 15:55

Fentimans, Bottlegreen, Belvoir.

At home all of these are nice with fizzy water. You can buy some of them in pubs too.

cosmopolitanplease · 18/07/2020 15:57

Absolutely agree. The sugar tax has ruined Ribena, ginger beer, Tango and Fanta for me. Angry

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/07/2020 15:57

I think that's a ridiculous reason to be pissed off with the twat. I'm more angry at the way he treats/treated his staff... I'm glad they won the tribunal to get the money they were owed. Sucks to be him.

I don't care what he spouts of his mouth. The there far better chefs out there who do more with far less fanfare... and nothing he says has any validity for me now.

knittingaddict · 18/07/2020 15:57

I agree op. Every summer it's a battle to find a lemonade without artificial sweeteners. It's been even worse since the sugar tax. I don't mind spending a bit more on better quality food, but it's annoying when you can't even find it on the shelves.

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:58

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken , you picked a wrong exemple, my dc is allergic to wheat, so we have gluten free/wheat free pasta all the time. And as for him, that's only choice, otherwise he will likely to die.

earthyfire · 18/07/2020 15:58

As others have mentioned I drink more coke now than ever because everything else taste crap...even diluted juice has sweetener in and I won't touch sweeteners. Oddly coca cola is always out of stock in my local Tesco and Sainsbury's.

Pleasebeaflesbite · 18/07/2020 15:59

Fever Tree has no sweeteners

Thank you @SoupDragon I will try that

Davros · 18/07/2020 16:00

Leave out the lemonade, put in champagne or, if you have to, Prosecco. Much nicer

Planesmistakenforstars · 18/07/2020 16:01

I can't stand the aftertaste of artificial sweetener. The Proper Sugar website has a resource for finding full sugar drinks and squashes etc. And for anyone who misses the old recipe Lucozade and Irn Bru, Enerzaid make full sugar versions of both which can be ordered online.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 18/07/2020 16:01

My analogy still stands.
goose1964 · 18/07/2020 16:01

I'm fully behind him. I love that drinks that used to be sickly sweet with sugar now have sweeteners so I can drink them. As to previous poster about her diabetic husband, don't most pubs well fruit juice?

zonkin · 18/07/2020 16:02

FGS, not all drinks have sweeteners in them instead of sugar. And yes, drinking either the full sugar or sweetener one is crap for your health, and in the case of the former, your teeth.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/07/2020 16:02

Also, drinks with sugar in don’t automatically cause obesity. DH and I grew up with full sugar pop and squash and so have our DCs. We all also drink water and milk (and other things) as part of a VARIED DIET. DH and I now in our fifties and both slim and healthy BMI. Same with DCs. Compared to most people of their ages they are skinny but would have simply been considered healthy in the 70s before everything became sugar free.
