Everytime I go round a friend's house and they bring out the pims I can't have it because virtually all lemonade now has sweeteners in. People say they taste like crap and gives me such a bad headache.

BobbyTheVet · 18/07/2020 15:15

I never forgave him for 'the cock in cider'

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:15

I am not a fan of artificial sweetener myself. I wouldn't drink it. Also I think there are many people who would drink anything as long as it taste ok and get them pissed.
I have no clue about the effect of artificial sweeteners on obesity. But most people who have unhealthy relationship with food/drink won't just have it once or twice a week, so it may make some difference.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/07/2020 15:16

You have a choice not to have a drink, or drink with/without an artificial sweeteners. Obesity is huge problem.

What else do you want to stop people from being able to buy in your nanny state? Diabetes is also a huge problem. Being obese isn't going to suddenly kill you; having a hypo and going into a coma as a result is very life-threatening.

FuckyNel · 18/07/2020 15:17

SAN Pelegrino have kept a full sugar range I’m enjoying one now while dh trims his bush

I thought the point of JO's campaign was to make sugary drinks more expensive, he wasn't advocating putting sweeteners in everything, that is down to the manufacturers.

KitKat2020 · 18/07/2020 15:20

The guy can’t catch a break. Blamed for random people’s aspartame headaches...

That’s very true!

Although he was very vocal in his support, the sugar tax wasn’t his brainchild. He can’t actually pass legislation either ...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/07/2020 15:20

They've messed with lucozade too.Being full of sugar was the point!

Yep, it's whole raison d'etre was that it provided a sugar boost for active people and it was heavily promoted in the diabetes 'community' as a go-to hypo stopper.

What's the point in carving out your own particular niche, becoming a trusted and relied-on brand over many years, and then just throwing that all away, deciding you'd rather switch to being just another slightly differently-flavoured fizzy drink next to all of the others in the newsagent's fridge?

Bellesavage · 18/07/2020 15:20

What did it for me was the show he did where he went round asking predominantly older women for their (amazing) recipes, got them to explain how they used wonderful local ingredients and skilled techniques that had been passed down for generations, then cut to him mansplaining how to do it his way.

DisobedientHamster · 18/07/2020 15:21

YANBU!

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:22

Wow, I have no clue what you are on about tbh, WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll.

I said nothing about diabetes. FYI, I have a child with multiple severe allergies who carry epi-pen everywhere, and also have chronic illness who need to take meds his whole life/ missing part of his organ. So, yes, I am quite aware some small thing can be life threatening.

bruffin · 18/07/2020 15:22

When i was in New Zealand I discovered Bunderberg, love refreshing drinks. They started selling them in Ocado, so i though great until they came and over here they added stevia and it was ruined

Although would kill for a proper Lemon Lime and bitters at the moment

marysuzairn · 18/07/2020 15:23

I don't get the you've got a choice brigade.

The point is you really don't. It's very difficult to get a sweetner free drink.

We used to have a choice and now that choice has been taken away / made very difficult to take!!

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 18/07/2020 15:25

Choice would be

A) sugar free
B) sweetener
C) original recipe

We don’t have that... we have usually A or B.

Very rarely do we get C

Vanillaradio · 18/07/2020 15:28

I have Type 1 diabetes and there's very little that works for hypos now. Quickest thing is a sugary drink but they've messed with the sugar content in things like Lucozade and it doesn't work quickly enough now. Only one that works now is Coke. So my choice has been restricted quite a lot....

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/07/2020 15:29

@Pleasebeaflesbite

Yanbu OP. I like my Pimms with ginger ale and it is now completely impossible to get non-low-calorie ginger ale. Fucking Jamie’s fault
@Pleasebeaflesbite. try Caustons. They have lots of lovely drinks without sweeteners.

@cariadlet

He was concerned about the obesity crisis and kids being fed junk food. He wants children to know where their food comes from, to have proper cooking lessons in school and for people to be able to knock up a few basic balanced meals.

I've always found his cheeky chappy/blokey persona a bit irritating but am totally behind his campaigns.

See this bit just seems weird to me. He wants everyone to eat natural healthy foods but then the results of the sugar tax are that everyone is drinking loads of artificial sweeteners rather than natural sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are not good for you and certainly not natural although we do know where they come from..... a chemical factory.

I suppose the moral of this is that the unintended consequences of an action can be worse than the original problem

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:31

D) don't drink if you have no choice. Have something else if you can.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/07/2020 15:33

Don't drink? Not sure that's a good life choice.

And talking of choices, why can't I choose to eat/drink foodstuff with sugar and without an ingredient that tastes disgusting?

Choice!!!

xolotltezcatlopoca · 18/07/2020 15:34

Vanillaradio, but in your case, you would prepare and carry things around just in case? Like my ds need to carry epipen around every where he goes?

bruffin · 18/07/2020 15:36

D) don't drink if you have no choice. Have something else if you can.
Why should d be the only option. There are is very little alternatives that is the problem. Lets go to the pub and have water Hmm
They even have put sweeteners in some brands of ciderShock

FlamingoAndJohn · 18/07/2020 15:36

People who want squash that doesn’t taste like crap, try Teisseire. I get it on Ocado and I think you can get it in Waitrose.

To still be pissed of by Jamie Oliver
Soubriquet · 18/07/2020 15:36

Don’t drink?

What else am I supposed to do? Absorb fluid by osmosis?

I don’t like water
I don’t drink alcohol
Im not keen on squash.

So I drink pop and tea.

DianaT1969 · 18/07/2020 15:39

In fairness, he probably didn't anticipate how ridiculously unimaginative and lazy drinks manufacturers would be. Artificial sweetners are awful. People think they have zero calories but don't realise that they spike insulin, the fat storage hormone, causing new metabolic problems.
There's a void in the market for non-artificial sweetner drinks.

Paradiseinportugal · 18/07/2020 15:40

@GreytExpectations

Sweeteners taste disgusting and leave an aftertaste that lasts all night.

Well this obviously isn't a fact and it's your unfortunate experience, myself and my family don't seem to have these issues. I think people just like being over dramatic about this stuff because they don't like change. Ah well, more for me Grin

Perhaps, yourself could try and understand that not everyone has the same taste as yourself. Artificial sweeteners do have an unpleasant aftertaste to me. I think that a small amount of natural sugar is better than an artificial product.
whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 15:41

I hate JO for different reasons. His ‘do as I say, not as I do’ methodology really pisses me off (I suppose that does relate to this, in a way). It’s ok for him to be overweight - he still is, just less so than he used to be - but that’s fine because he eats ‘good’ food. Yet those poorer fatties with their turkey twizzlers and potato smiley faces need to be judged and shamed for their dietary choices.
