To still be pissed of by Jamie Oliver

Everytime I go round a friend's house and they bring out the pims I can't have it because virtually all lemonade now has sweeteners in. People say they taste like crap and gives me such a bad headache.

I’d rather have real sugar than artificial crap. It’s laughable the way that sugar is demonised while sweetness are seen as better.

anon444877 · 18/07/2020 14:16

It’s hardly Jamie Oliver’s fault that soft drink companies have shoved their rotten products full of sweetener - he’s doing good work to profile the obesity crisis.

There are plenty of naice lemonades our there.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 18/07/2020 14:16

I now tell bar staff and waiting staff that I have an allergy to aspartame. Don't know if it's an allergy or intolerance but it gives me migraines. Either way, they let me check the ingredients on drinks so I don't accidentally have any.

Chloemol · 18/07/2020 14:16

To me a little bit of natural sugar is much better than artificial sweeteners full of chemicals. Just like people use frylight instead of a bit of oil, have you seen the crap in that, not to mention all the artificial stuff in low fat and fat free crap

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/07/2020 14:18

I cant tell the difference between sugar and AS. maybe I'm not evolved ?!

Pleasebeaflesbite · 18/07/2020 14:18

Yanbu OP. I like my Pimms with ginger ale and it is now completely impossible to get non-low-calorie ginger ale. Fucking Jamie’s fault

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/07/2020 14:19

It is a fact that some people find sweeteners taste disgusting and cause them headaches and stomach problems Grey. Just because they dont have that impact on you, doesnt mean they don't impact others.

Quarantimespringclean · 18/07/2020 14:19

Each to their own. I very rarely have soft drinks but if I do it will always be with sweeteners. The full sugar versions coat my teeth and feel sticky.

I disagree, his approach was very short sighted and he hasn't bothered to follow it up to fix the flaws.

I doubt the increase in sweeteners is helping obesity as they make people eat more because of the fake sugar.

I have long thought this and am cheered to see how many people think the same! Artificial sweeteners are rank, and they give me and DD1 headaches. You have to be jolly careful ordering a gin and tonic in a pub these days.

Sainsbury's Classic lemonade is a good sweetener free option. Fevertree drinks are good too.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 18/07/2020 14:21

I miss proper Lucozade - not like we had it often but it's not the same.

I miss Irn Bru 😭

Stevia gives me the wild shites

lidoshuffle · 18/07/2020 14:22

San Pellegrino with lots of ice used to be an occasional treat, then it suddenly tasted horrible. Yup, sweeteners.

I'm not paying premium price for synthetic muck so another soft drink off the list.

skodadoda · 18/07/2020 14:22

Meh. If you don't like it then don't drink it. They are the hosts and offering your the drink therefore it's up to them whether they choose to the diet version with sweetener and not the fatty teeth rotting kind. A bit OTT for you to be pissed at Jamie Oliver, I agree with what he did.

It would be nice to have the choice. It’s almond impossible to buy a bottle of squash that doesn’t contain sweeteners; tastes horrible.

DingDongDenny · 18/07/2020 14:23

It's the same with tonic water. I was having to buy ridiculously expensive fever tree, but fortunately I have now discovered Lydl do both diet and full sugar tonic water with no sweetners

Wilburgh · 18/07/2020 14:23

I missed lucozade when I had my GTT test in this pregnancy. Because it no longer contains real sugar they can’t use it. I had to drink some awful Soluble glucose tablets instead and puked three times trying to keep it down.

Bastards.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 18/07/2020 14:23

The lack of choice is awful. I’d rather pay a bit more and get natural ingredients.
My dcs really missed fizzy drinks (I refuse to buy them but they have them if they’re out sometimes) so they made orangeade a couple of weeks ago using a simple boiled up sugar syrup and carbonated water (something to do in lockdown) and it was amazing. Although that doesn’t help if you’re out.

damnthatanxiety · 18/07/2020 14:23

I think the way Pimm's is made now is vile.Overly sweet and sickly. Oroginally, lemonade was nothing like the chemical tasting synthetic cough medicine flavoured beverage it is today. I find Pimm's better when made with bitter lemon or cutting the lemonade with ginger beer and soda

Dozer · 18/07/2020 14:24

Think his campaign was for much broader changes. Government’s childhood obesity strategy was pretty weedy.

HouchinBawbags · 18/07/2020 14:24

I too dislike artificial sweeteners and I don't think I'm in a minority, just looking at this post alone. Maybe @GreytExpectations and family can't tell the difference but it's clear many, many of us can.
I've always enjoyed fizzy drinks. Now I'd rather go without than drink that nasty artificial shite. I think like everything in life moderation is key but I find Jamie Oliver's patronising and obnoxious attitude infuriating. He's a chef. He uses thousands of ingredients that aren't "healthy" or good for you yet somehow has the right to lecture us all on what we eat. His restaurants still sold desserts!

Now that's not to say I didn't like his healthier school lunches scheme and do agree that the quality we have always allowed is shocking but he campaigned against things like Turkey twizzlers and full sugar soft drinks and attacked anything he didn't agree with. Education would have been better than trying to eradicate our choices.

I also miss his realistic, down to Earth cooking. Now he's telling us that we can get "everyday cupboard essentials" like essence of Peruvian Yak milk in our local supermarket. No Jamie ya poncy git.

Lozz22 · 18/07/2020 14:24

Irritates the fuck out of me when I have to pay extra to get a full fat cola or a milkshake st McDonald's, yet can have a diet version a of soft drink included in the price. I'm buying a flaming mega unhealthy burger and chips with shit loads of salt on them and dipping them in a sauce that's also probably full of salt and sugar. A sugary drink isn't going to make an ounce of difference!! I could understand if it was some health kick cafe or something!

SquishyBones · 18/07/2020 14:26

Jamie Oliver is a trigger word remember. Itv was none of his business he should have kept out of it nobody cares what he thinks if he didn’t want to drink it or eat turkey twizxlera he didn’t have to but he could have signed an autograph for Matthew

FixItUpChappie · 18/07/2020 14:26

I like him. He cares about something and tries to make a difference - how many of us can say that?

howaboutchocolate · 18/07/2020 14:26

@lidoshuffle San pellegrino do an organic version now in glass bottles (orangina style) that's full of proper sugar. It's really nice, but more expensive.
