Mask avoiders are basically anti-vaxers?

Aside from in the case of medical exemption obviously.

AIBU to think a lot of people that mount a personal argument against masks are of a similar mindset though?

Ive got 1 on now, only because the pup keeps farting.

Frownette · 17/07/2020 10:00

I think I'll just wear one every time I go out now, saves the hassle of thinking about it

ButterMeCrumpets · 17/07/2020 10:01

But remember it protects others so you better mask the pup as well.

Is there a word for people who make up labels to polarise opinions?
Goady.

Getting in the habit is easy. I have three reusable masks, one to wear, one to wash, one to dry. Goes in the bag along with the hand sanitizer, inside a ziplock plastic bag.

To wear, put on only touching the ear loops. Remove by the ear loops and drop in to the ziplock bag till you get home and can wash it.

No need to touch inside OR outside of mask.

Experiment at home to get best fit, so you don't need to fiddle with it when you're out.

So simple, really.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/07/2020 10:05

I don't think it's necessarily a mentality (for some yes, but not for everybody).

Vaccines are just much easier - you book an appointment, go and have it done, maybe have a sore arm or feel a bit off for a few days, then that's it.

Mask-wearing takes a lot more conscious everyday effort, which makes it harder to keep up.

It might become a habit in future, like taking your keys, or putting your shoes on, but at the moment it isn't.

Chanjer · 17/07/2020 10:08

FTR I find masks uncomfortable and not great to wear, I think everyone does, they weren't designed with comfort in mind primarily, kinda like a seatbelt

People saying:

Ok. I will bite. I am neither an anti-vaxer or a UKIP voter just a bog standard human being. I do not want to wear a mask. I will not be going anywhere non essential after 24th that requires me to wear a mask so no need for anyone to worry about me spreading my germs. If I do have to venture out for anything (and it would have to be really essential, thinking medical appointments, opticians) I will wear a mask where required. So far I have followed all the rules and I am a law abiding generally compliant person but compulsory mask wearing for shopping, nope, step too far. I have been working throughout lockdown in a school with a bubble of 15 and come September I will be with a bubble of 30 and my own children will be in bubbles of 240 x 2 at school. If it’s safe to do that then a fleeting encounter in a shop is no different.

This is fine. You're not constructing an argument as to why they shouldn't apply to you. Finding other ways not to wear a mask, ie not going in shops or on public transport, is perfectly acceptable

YABU

I'm pro vaccination and have flu jab yearly.

Personally I would rather not wear a mask in public (although I do wear both a mask and a visor for work).

I don't really care if they make masks mandatory but I will probably just avoid places that make me wear them.

From observation members of the general public who wear masks are constantly adjusting them and touching their faces (with their germ laden hands) so the idea that these offer protection to the wearer is weak.

IfIHadAHeart · 17/07/2020 10:15

So where are these people you claim are refusing to wear one (without any valid exemption)? I’ve seen people like myself who will limit trips to anywhere masks are compulsory, but I’ve yet to see anyone say they will ignore the rules without good reason.

PurpleDaisies · 17/07/2020 10:18

Finding other ways not to wear a mask, ie not going in shops or on public transport, is perfectly acceptable.

That’s what every single poster who doesn’t want to wear a mask that I’ve seen on here has said they will do.

Nousernameforme · 17/07/2020 10:18

I wore one in the supermarket yesterday I have GAD and supermarkets are a massive trigger usually. I had a lovely time I don't know if it was the blinker effect as it did obscure my vision a little like when looking down. Or the breathing in a bit of co2 but I was very chilled. I left dp to do his own shopping and wondered off on my own.

GreytExpectations · 17/07/2020 10:20

If you look outside the mumsnet universe you will see plenty people proclaim that they will just say they are exempt and not wear one. Just because people on here aren't saying it, doesn't mean it isn't happening

JaneJeffer · 17/07/2020 10:22

Nonsense. Vaccinations and masks are two completely different things.

Theterrible42s · 17/07/2020 10:23

Contentious unless you're spending time in a really high-risk situation (like one covid ward) that level of precaution sounds really over the top.

Chanjer · 17/07/2020 10:25

Entering our business which clearly specifies you have to wear one

Obviously. Use some critical thinking and understand that the attitude between those who can but refuse to wear a mask and those anti-vaxers. It's all "me, me, me" and not caring about how they protect others. Nobody is saying they are the same thing, they are saying the 2 types of people have similar mindsets.
verybritishproblems · 17/07/2020 10:26

What’s worse (more annoying) is people having one but wearing it in their chin or with their nose out Confused either wear one or not, what’s the point in wearing one for show?

Mask avoiders are basically anti-vaxers?
PurpleDaisies · 17/07/2020 10:26

Entering our business which clearly specifies you have to wear one

How do you know they don’t have a valid exception?

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/07/2020 10:29

How are they going to police this, who is going to report to the police about not wearing a mask? (if you get what i mean)

Chanjer · 17/07/2020 10:33

How do you know they don’t have a valid exception?

Because we control entry to our business and people are welcome to offer a valid reason

Yanbu

JaneJeffer · 17/07/2020 10:34

Use some critical thinking
That's what I am doing. There's proof that vaccines work but I'm not convinced on mask use and I think it's probably more unhygienic.

Chanjer · 17/07/2020 10:36

"Masks will be improperly used..."

Then use them properly yourself?

Honestly what kind of logic is that?

@Theterrible42s

Um...not really. It's just using a mask responsibly. Takes me what, 30 seconds to chuck in a bag, another 30 to put it on by the ear loops, 10 seconds to take it off and drop it in a plastic bag? Wash it in the sink with hot soapy water at night, hang it to dry. It's really not a drama.

I'm on public transport a lot, so I want to do the right thing by other passengers, and myself. Costs me almost nothing.

Mintjulia · 17/07/2020 10:45

No, sorry but that's not true.

I don't know any anti-vaxers. I know plenty of people not comfortable wearing a mask.
