Mask avoiders are basically anti-vaxers?

Aside from in the case of medical exemption obviously.

AIBU to think a lot of people that mount a personal argument against masks are of a similar mindset though?

@GreytExpectations

as all the advice from government has said me wearing one does not protect me from getting COVID.

And there is the typical "me, me, me" attitude. As has been said numerous time, the masks are designed to protect others from the virus, so if someone wears one they have a less chance of spreading it to others. So you basically don't care about protecting others.

Yep. Which is where the similarities to the anti vaxers comes in.
IfIHadAHeart · 17/07/2020 09:39

I’m not anti-mask I just have no desire to wear one. I find them uncomfortable, hot, and I struggle to understand other people when they have one on. I also know, having had to wear masks at work for a while, that the general public will not wear them correctly all or even most of the time.

I just won’t go out shopping though, unless absolutely necessary.

I’m not an anti-vaxer or a UKIPer

GreytExpectations · 17/07/2020 09:39

It's the attitude of people only caring if it only benefits them, god forbid we work together to protect everyone.

ContentiousOne · 17/07/2020 09:39

Maskers never distance? Urban myth.

PurpleDaisies · 17/07/2020 09:41

Maskers never distance? Urban myth.

My experience is the people who have been standing too close to me, reaching over me in supermarkets etc have generally been wearing masks. Obviously some do observe the distancing rules.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/07/2020 09:41

Yes. But now it means you can see them and keep safe distance.

No one wants to wear a face mask🤷🏻 But we are all responsible adults so we should be able to process why we should wear one for a time being.

BakedCam · 17/07/2020 09:41

@ContentiousOne

I don't believe anti-maskers will stay home.
What is an 'anti masker?' A new term made up by 'Pro maskers' ?

They are mandatory on public transport since June 15, and mandatory in shops from July 24.

There are exemptions for perfectly valid reasons that people are entitled to use.

Why should people 'stay home' ?

cassgate · 17/07/2020 09:41

Figment.

If I have read your comment correctly you are basically saying that I must go out and shop for the greater good of the high street and the economy whilst wearing an item of clothing that I find uncomfortable and hate wearing so that I can protect others from my germs. Why the hell would I do that. I have no objection to people wearing masks if they want to but I do not find them pleasant to wear and would rather not so I won’t not hard to understand and I will not be made to feel guilty for the demise of the high street.

Bluebellpainting · 17/07/2020 09:45

OP I see where you are coming from but not all those who won’t wear a mask will not take up the vaccine as @contrmary highlights. Because for them motivation for vaccine is that it will protect them rather than the motivation being heard immunity that it will protect others (one of the primary aims of most immunisation programmes) They don’t see the benefit to themselves of wearing a mask so won’t. Simply put a vaccine will benefit me so I’ll have it, a mask doesn’t benefit me directly so I won’t Wear it. I’m not one of these people but that is a lot of thinking I have come across.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/07/2020 09:45

cassgate sorry - I should have added sarcasm alert. I didn’t think anyone would think someone would seriously suggest that.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 17/07/2020 09:46

I'm in favour of people wearing masks.
I'm not an anti-vaxxer although I am in favour of people having the right to individual vaccines rather than a vaccine against multiple diseases. I do believe that, in some people, tbeir systems can be overwhelmed by the multiple vaccines so they should have the choice to have individual vaccines. I think it is better to do that than have none at all.

Is there a word for people who make up labels to polarise opinions?

Bluebellpainting · 17/07/2020 09:50

@PurpleDaisies And I have found people who aren’t wearing mask see my wearing of one as it is ok to stand closer to me even though they are not wearing one themselves. So it goes both ways.

ContentiousOne · 17/07/2020 09:50

Anti-maskers = people who are quite capable of wearing a mask, even if it's a little uncomfortable, in enclosed public spaces, but don't because my rights/why should I/but it doesn't help me/the govt can't tell me what to do.

No drama if you're an anti-masker who commits to staying home for the duration. Knock yourself out.

I don't believe people who say they'll just stay home because they refuse to wear a mask, will. I think they are more likely to try to game the exemptions, which is crap for people who cannot mask.

Hopefully most mask grumblers are not anti mask enough that they won't refuse to comply with compulsory use. I'd expect only a minority of grumblers are prepared to risk a fine.

PurpleDaisies · 17/07/2020 09:52

No drama if you're an anti-masker who commits to staying home for the duration.

Again, why should they stay home? Masks aren’t going to be mandatory everywhere.

GreytExpectations · 17/07/2020 09:52

I don't believe those oeople saying they will just stay home because they don't want to wear a mask. They will go out, without their mask and continue to risk others health. They are no better than all those idiots who flocked to the beaches

EatDessertFirst · 17/07/2020 09:53

I don't like wearing a mask so I won't be going anywhere that requires one. I'll shop online. If I have to wear one (doctors etc) then I will. I will also wear it correctly i.e. not around my chin/under my nose/take it off to speak. I will also keep up hand-washing and social distancing.

I am wholly in favour of the vaccination of children and both of my DC can/will have whatever vaccination is reccomended.

So your OP doesn't apply to me or, I imagine, quite a large number of people. The frothing needs to stop. As a lot of MNers say...you do you.

GreytExpectations · 17/07/2020 09:53

I think it's pretty obvious PP meant from shops. As it's mandatory in shops from the UK.
GreytExpectations · 17/07/2020 09:54

Meant from the 24th,not UK!

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/07/2020 09:54

Wooo Hoooo another mask thread.

ButterMeCrumpets · 17/07/2020 09:56

I will go to the places that don't require masks. Restaurants for example. Or are you telling me that I have no right to choose where I spend my money?

PurpleDaisies · 17/07/2020 09:56

I think it's pretty obvious PP meant from shops. As it's mandatory in shops from the UK.

People seem to love making up extra rules for everyone to be judged against over and above what’s on the guidelines. Who knows what they meant. They can clarify that for themselves.

ButterMeCrumpets · 17/07/2020 09:57

@vodkaredbullgirl

I think mask threads will continue until everyone says yes yes we love masks. So much I wear one whilst watching tv at home just because Grin
Iwalkinmyclothing · 17/07/2020 09:58

I'm not overjoyed by masks but there does seem to be sufficient evidence that if enough people wear them enough of the time, there is a reduction in infection rates, that I honestly don't understand why anyone who can safely wear one wouldn't.

People who make the choice to avoid settings where mask wearing is compulsory so as not to have to wear one I have no argument with at all- they don't want to wear a mask and have found a way to make that work for them by not going places where a mask should be worn. Fair enough, and they definitely shouldn't be bloody guilted for not going to shops etc.

I really don't enjoy wearing a mask at work but I imagine I would enjoy even less learning that I had merrily spread a virus everywhere when there was a resource available to me to reduce the chances of that.

ContentiousOne · 17/07/2020 09:58

Jesus. Just wear one on the bus, train or anytime you're in a shop or similar with other people. The more of us wear them in these limited circumstances, the safer we make each other, our health care professionals and even our economy! Masking isn't perfect; it's just one valuable tool among many. Why be so selfish? It's not like you have to wear it 24/7.
