Just posting for opinions as I'm curious. What do you think will be the next lot of things he announces? Other than wearing masks.
I did hear it was Monday the 23rd. Is this correct?

On coronavirus, I think the government acted on the advice of scientific advisors. I think that as a new, novel virus no one really knows the best way of dealing with it

Have a look at the death stats for Germany and New Zealand compared with ours, @frostedviolets, and tell us whether you really think Johnson couldn't have found a better way of dealing with Covid.

Moving Parliament to York?

bingbong1970 · 15/07/2020 23:35

In my opinion, eventually, at some point, if not already, someone far cleverer and more important than me, will realise something. They will realise that if the government had done nothing, the virus would have acted in nearly exactly the way it did. Unfortunately, slightly more people would have caught it. Then, really unfortunately, slightly more mostly older and unwell people would have been taken from us a bit sooner. If the virus continues to behave as predictably as it has so far, there will be no second wave. It will mutate every year, weakening each time. Very soon, it will be something that the vulnerable will have a jab for, to protect them from it. Facing enormous pressure, Boris Johnson took the decision to do what he did. He has extended the lives of more people than if he had done nothing. But he has done and is doing enormous damage to the economy. I don't like to think that he is already aware and is trying to drag it on through the winter. He could then claim he succeeded in stopping a second wave that was never going to happen. I really don't like to think he doesn't know the likely reality and people are going to have to suffer for much longer. While not wishing to appear arrogant, I know that I'm right and will eventually be proven to be right. Although I am open to the possibility of being wrong but I'm confident I'm not. Good bye Mumsnet.

He might as well announce that we should all put our heads between our legs and kiss our arses goodbye.

Boris and co couldn't run a bath, cue the defenders.

I love this. This is my internal monologue during every argument with every member of my family Grin

Pixxie7 · 16/07/2020 00:17

I hope your right, but I will be very surprised if there is not a second wave. If you look at other countries which are already seeing problems. I don’t think Boris has any idea what the real situation is and is now only concerned with the countries economics and the looming next stage of Brexit.

@bingbong1970 why "goodbye mumsnet", was that your 'drop the mic' moment leaving us all stunned and breathless for more wise words 😁?

I think this quite a lot too. That we over reacted as we were were terrified by what was happening in Italy. When people say we did not act watching Italy, I completely disagree and think Italy maybe caused us to over react, clear the hospitals etc.

But I do think politically it would have been impossible to just do nothing. The media would have lost their minds - Piers Morgan would have combusted. So I think we had to lock down etc.
So I do think this was the right course of action and maybe a week too late.
We can never know what would have happened if we had done nothing - I personally think we would have had 100K plus deaths so lockdown did save many lives - but would have caused many too.

Ultimately whether it was all worth it in the end when so many people (mostly young and poorer) will maybe lose their jobs, mental heatth issues plus all those other non-covid deaths caused by lockdown as people were so scared to go to hospital , childrens education , I really don't know.
I haven't lost a close relative to Covid or anything non-covid related and I haven't lost my job or my income so I might feel completely differenty about the pros and cons of lockdown if I had.

but Brexit and the looming financial crisis is hugely important. Of course Boris needs to focus on it. Only those with no financial worries with a guarantee income / job can sit at home and think otherwise.

.Moving Parliament to York?
😀😀so happy to see some non/ Covid stuff! Thanks@RedToothBrush!

PotholeParadise · 16/07/2020 09:11

I am aware that Johnson's proposal to move to York is not strictly related to coronavirus, but in conjunction with everything else, it reminds me of nothing so much as Henry VIII going on progression with his court to avoid the sweating sickness in London.

Plus ça change!

RedToothBrush · 16/07/2020 09:18

The York thing is about trying to get you to miss what he's about to do to devolution and the Scottish, Welsh and NI assemblies in a Westminster power grab.

Nousernameforme · 16/07/2020 09:19

Do we know when the announcement will be yet?

GreyGardens88 · 16/07/2020 09:20

The last thing York and surrounds needs is something driving property prices up further

They should move it to Huddersfield for example

Too true. It would also kill York’s tourist trade with its take up of hotel rooms. I’d be horrified if I still lived in York.
