In my opinion, eventually, at some point, if not already, someone far cleverer and more important than me, will realise something. They will realise that if the government had done nothing, the virus would have acted in nearly exactly the way it did. Unfortunately, slightly more people would have caught it. Then, really unfortunately, slightly more mostly older and unwell people would have been taken from us a bit sooner. If the virus continues to behave as predictably as it has so far, there will be no second wave. It will mutate every year, weakening each time. Very soon, it will be something that the vulnerable will have a jab for, to protect them from it. Facing enormous pressure, Boris Johnson took the decision to do what he did. He has extended the lives of more people than if he had done nothing. But he has done and is doing enormous damage to the economy. I don't like to think that he is already aware and is trying to drag it on through the winter. He could then claim he succeeded in stopping a second wave that was never going to happen. I really don't like to think he doesn't know the likely reality and people are going to have to suffer for much longer. While not wishing to appear arrogant, I know that I'm right and will eventually be proven to be right. Although I am open to the possibility of being wrong but I'm confident I'm not. Good bye Mumsnet.
I think this quite a lot too. That we over reacted as we were were terrified by what was happening in Italy.
When people say we did not act watching Italy, I completely disagree and think Italy maybe caused us to over react, clear the hospitals etc.
But I do think politically it would have been impossible to just do nothing. The media would have lost their minds - Piers Morgan would have combusted. So I think we had to lock down etc.
So I do think this was the right course of action and maybe a week too late.
We can never know what would have happened if we had done nothing - I personally think we would have had 100K plus deaths so lockdown did save many lives - but would have caused many too.
Ultimately whether it was all worth it in the end when so many people (mostly young and poorer) will maybe lose their jobs, mental heatth issues plus all those other non-covid deaths caused by lockdown as people were so scared to go to hospital , childrens education , I really don't know.
I haven't lost a close relative to Covid or anything non-covid related and I haven't lost my job or my income so I might feel completely differenty about the pros and cons of lockdown if I had.
