Just posting for opinions as I'm curious. What do you think will be the next lot of things he announces? Other than wearing masks.
I did hear it was Monday the 23rd. Is this correct?

frostedviolets Is that you Carrie?

labyrinthloafer · 15/07/2020 19:20

@frostedviolets I think you're a party stooge, surely. Are you in fact Dominic Cummings???

Those things are very small compared to FORTY THOUSAND DEATHS.

RedToothBrush · 15/07/2020 19:22

@frostedviolets

No idea but I’ve been quite impressed by Boris as PM so far and I was never a fan, I didn’t vote for him.
I'd quite like what ever you are having please.
Snowjive2 · 15/07/2020 19:24

Agree kazzyhoward. Sunak appears polished (he’s invested a lot of money in his brand recently) but remember he was willing to accept the Chancellorship on the basis that The Twat Cummings appointed all his staff. He’s just another Cummings puppet.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/07/2020 19:24

More holes in his furlough and small business support than Swiss cheese and not willing to listen to valid complaints/objections agree to disagree, there will always be people who sadly fall through the support net but I think he’s doing well.

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2020 19:25

Boris has made an impression, yes.

(When I first typed that “Boris” autocorrected to “Virus”).

Country thrown into a recession, over 60,000 excess deaths I suppose that is impressive Shock but surely noone can be impressed?
InFiveMins · 15/07/2020 19:27

I'm not particularly a fan of Boris Johnson, but not sure any PM would have been able to do better.

anitagreen · 15/07/2020 19:27

Sorry just see saw replies now I got the date wrong 🤦🏽‍♀️

frostedviolets · 15/07/2020 19:29

Sigh.
You know, people can have opposing viewpoints without being ‘party stooges’ Hmm

FYI I have actually only voted Tory once in my life, for Cameron, not Boris.
I have never been ‘a tory’, I’ve always been centre left.

I voted for Corbyn in the last election.
When the Conservatives won with such a large majority me and DH were actually really depressed about it.

But we both feel he has done a much better job than we thought he would.

When it comes to coronavirus specifically, no one actually knows what the answer is.
Every scientist says something different.
Evident by the different countries different methods of dealing with the outbreak.
And yes, it was indeed Sweden I was thinking of, not Norway.

SmileyClare · 15/07/2020 19:30

I think the announcement will cover;

  • mandatory mask wearing (shops, public transport)
-ways the economy is being restored, including the opening of gyms, nail bars etc -reference to the scientific strategies; the track and trace and how the R rate is calculated for an area -reference to local lockdowns and our need to be prepared for those, -clarification of the second SEISS self employed income support scheme being rolled out.

The whole government mandate is available to view online after BJ has addressed the nation. That is far more comprehensive.

Barbie222 · 15/07/2020 19:31

Boris isn't a skilled enough leader or communicator to cope with what he's been thrown. We needed someone who could grasp things quicker and say things more clearly so that there was no wriggle room in the understanding.

Also, he clearly came into the role with far too much baggage to be useful and needed to keep far too many shadowy figures quiet and happy. I suspect a lot of people have a good hold over him and shackle the decisions he could make.

Babyroobs · 15/07/2020 19:31

Bloody hell. I think you must have quite low expectations of how someone should run the country during a crisis !
frostedviolets · 15/07/2020 19:32

Those things are very small compared to FORTY THOUSAND DEATHS

Those 40,000 are from coronavirus.
A new, novel virus that at the moment, no one fully understands the best way of preventing.
As evidenced by the different tactics used by different scientists/governments in different countries.

And personally, I don’t find the protection of sex safe spaces small. At all. It’s a massive issue for me and impacts on half the population!

Lilybet1980 · 15/07/2020 19:32

@ViperBugloss are you suggesting Boris is responsible for the recession? Or that he could have done something to prevent it? If so please share your recommendations. I’m sure there will be many, many economists interested to hear them.

Didyousaynutella · 15/07/2020 19:35

I think people, especially mumsnet would have blamed Boris whatever he did just because they already hated him m.
I don’t agree with everything that has happened but I actually think they have acted ok based on scientific advice at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. The furlough scheme has been very generous which I think has flummoxed extreme left wingers.

StopGo · 15/07/2020 19:38

Who do you all suggest we replace Boris with? I agree he's not been any good but who is actually any better? That's my problem.

TheSunIsStillShining · 15/07/2020 19:39

@noblegiraffe

As a business owner we have had access to information at all times and guidance

Shame they didn’t do the same for education, it’s been a total shambles.

As a business owner I can clearly say that the information was useless. They didn't really say anything. The furlough scheme is good, but let's not credit this gov with it. It's not a unique thing that no one has come up with before the UK.

As for doing it right: look at Merkel/Germany. Clear communication, clear plans that are shared with the public and transparent datasets.
Not everything is peachy there either, but it is waaaay better than the "maybe, mayne not -- well, you decide..." attitude this gov had/has.

The public en masse are behaving like idiots because they don't know better. 67m ppl should not have to do their research one-by-one. And what's going on with masks(rather no-mask movements) is a clear picture of miscommunication from gov.

This clown does not have the country's best intentions at heart, couldn't give a rat's ass about it.

And let's not even start talking Brexit, because if this whole pandemic isn't going to drive us into the ground, these morons will make sure to do their best to make things even worst.

cardibach · 15/07/2020 19:39

@newusername2009

You do realise Rishi works for Boris - right?

No one could have made the right decisions here and I think he has been responsible for saving a lot of businesses. Yes plenty will still go bust and we are going to head into a very difficult time economically but he has saved a lot.

Anyway this forum seems to be full of people who know better than anyone else so there is no convincing

Nobody? Tell that to NZ.
SusieOwl4 · 15/07/2020 19:41

@frostedviolets

Exactly and New York had 30000 deaths with a population of 8.9 million .
It does not bear thinking of if that was multiplied in proportion to the population of the uk .

It’s odd that Boris gets blamed for a pandemic .

But that’s politics for you .

GoingtotheWinchester · 15/07/2020 19:44

Sweden's death rate has been devastating and they've admitted they got it wrong.

Johnson is an awful PM. Absolutely awful. His government are the worst we could have had for such a crisis - indecisive, flip flopping, populist, disastrous. He is utterly out of his depth and the vultures are circling. Many in the tory party want him gone. Starmer is wiping the floor with him already.

TheSunIsStillShining · 15/07/2020 19:45

Exactly. This is a bloody island. UK should have closed it's borders in early march, track and trace + mass test.
Oh wait, we were late to the party so we could only pre-order tests.
Oh wait, our lockdown was a mock of a lockdown, not a real one. They screwed the economy over for nothing really. Proper lockdown = stopping the spread of the virus. But a lockdown where 100thousands can fly into the country without testing and go as they please.... what's the point then to lock down.

They were going for the herd immunity, but because everyone in the world said it was a good idea they pretended that they abandoned it.
Oh wait, no they didn't.
And most of this comes down to having a psycho/sociopath as the unelected leader, because the elected leader is decorating a kid's room, changing diapers and can't be bothered to go to cobra meetings or read research papers.

GoingtotheWinchester · 15/07/2020 19:45

Boris clearly isn't being blamed for the pandemic Hmm he's being blamed for his utterly catastrophic handling of it, and his constant lying about the facts. His blaming of care homes and lies about protecting them from the start are staggering in their cruelty. And that's just one example.

SmilesAreFree2020 · 15/07/2020 19:47

Impressed by bumbling Boris....

The guy who didn't take things seriously and announced he had been 'shaking hands with covid patients'.... surprise, surprise he gets covid.
The guy that seems to have managed to delay every important decision and then makes them after the pandemic has gone past the peak...

There are many other reasons not to be impressed with the bumbling idiot... but people seem to like him because he is precisely that 'bumbling' and 'likeable' not leadership material though

fadingfast · 15/07/2020 19:48

As the European country with by far the worst number of deaths, I'm not sure on what basis BJ has done a good job. The fiasco with Cummings in particular is something he should never be forgiven for. Intellectually he's just not up to the job. I think it's particularly disgraceful that he hasn't continued with regular public briefings, if not every day then at least once a week with the scientists. Nicola Sturgeon is still holding them every day after all. BJ cannot cope with close scrutiny because he's not 'a details man' and too reliant on his advisers to cover up for him. He and the rest of his appalling cabinet make me ashamed to be British.
