Drag, drag, drag....

I have never been a particularly sensitive or active feminist, but all this drag rubbish on TV is getting to me. How at a time when rightly you could not broadcast in black face or similar is it OK to mock or at best caricature women so ridiculously?

It depends on the drag act.

I've seen loads where is just female impression and they sing and tell jokes, take the piss act smutty to straight guys. Not really insulting to females, more of a homage to females.

But there's others that just seem to hate women and use it as a way to make fun and belittle women. Characturing women in the most grotesque ways - which often seems to come from a place of jelousey.

But its all pretty outdated now and seeing as we no longer want to pigeon hole people into men and women boxes, it's seem silly that a man in a dress equates a man dressed as a woman. In this liberal gender fluid society - surely it's impossible to dress as the oppersite sex?

@Notimeforaname

I didn't say your average woman. At all. I didn't say woman. It's an impersonation. Again I have never experienced drag like others have here, thank fuck for that.

Many of the drag performers I see and work with are very talented individuals. Actors, singers, dancers, artist etc.
They are never just parading around in heels or short skirts. That by any standard and in any arena, is a talentless act.
They are putting on a show. I can't believe so many people have sat in an establishment and witnessed such vulgar goings on as I've heard

I'm talking about the sort of drag that is on Rupaul's Drag Race etc that we see on the telly - is that not proper drag then? Genuine question!
Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 18:40

I feel the exact same about drag kings or Queens, man, woman, whoever. They're putting on a show and playing a part.
Its not compulsory to watch a drag act, nor is it illegal.

I know people really like to compare drag to blackface. But it is not and will never be the same thing.

Again I understand people are offended by it. People are offended by all sorts of things.
It's much more calming to just accept people like different things and anything you are offended by(which is totally within the law) you should just stay away from and try not to spend so much energy thinking about it. Change the channel.
It'll only make you angrier.

Post watershed tv IS vulgar most of the time. 😂

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 18:43

Just because it's amplified on TV. The people with the most shocking names or story get the part. In any reality show. We all know this. This doesn't accurately mirror the drag world in real life.
Like everything... There are different genres and avenues.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 18:45

So I think it's not fair to equate the over the top reality show personalities with genuine working performers who respect their audiences and the platform they have been given.

tiredanddangerous · 18/08/2020 18:46

It completely depends on the individual act for me.
Man dressing as woman = fine
Man dressing as woman in order to mock and demean women = not fine
Misogyny is not ok whoever it comes from.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 18:48

tiredanddangerous couldn't agree more with your post.

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 18:52

Not read the whole thread.

I don't like drag as find it a piss take of women

Anyway last night was channel hopping and Canada drag race was on so I thought. Maybe I'm being closed minded a lot of women in MN love it. And I've hated men dressing up as women for laughs since the late 70s when I was a kid do should give it a try .

Seemed to be what I was expecting, bitchiness etc. Then they came out in costumes and one was, can't remember the exact words. Rocking the pageant / Jon Benet look. An adult man with loads of makeup and a frilly skirt and heels on simpering up and down with a reference to jonbenet?

Wtf???

So I haven't changed my mind, in fact it was worse than I was expecting.

AnyFucker · 18/08/2020 18:54

Haven't RTFT but has anyone who is offended by drag mentioned how they object to being subjected to male sexual display ?

I don't wish to participate in autogynephilia. That is my objection to drag.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 18:55

I'm curious to know from people who have experienced it first hand, where in the world have you seen these real life acts, the ones with the boobs falling out and making sick jokes and demeaning women on stage ?

Were they in clubs in back alleys on holidays or is this down your lovely local boozer??
Was this recent enough or years ago?
I'm genuinely interested to know as I've yet to come across any like this.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:00

An adult man with loads of makeup and a frilly skirt and heels on simpering up and down with a reference to jonbenet?

Oh god yea, that's just disgraceful and in no way funny or entertaining Confused

As I said earlier when it comes to TV and reality shows, this is what TV executives want. They want the most offensive or shocking person in their show. It creates ratings and talk.

Drag race wouldn't be a fair representation of drag performers in real life.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:01

Of course there are exceptions !

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 19:02

It was the judges who mentioned jonbenet.

I was really taken aback.

So I googled it and apparently it's a 'thing'.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:03

NiceGerbil that's so fuckin weird ConfusedHmm

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 19:05

I was WTFing at DH and he WTF back.

So yeah maybe I'm Mary Whitehouse or something but it's a nope from me.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:05

That's just awful. Man, woman, plant or animal... Never even nearly OK to joke about somthing like that.

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 19:06

It's fucking awful is what it is

I knew they named themselves after famous women but made their names really sexual etc which I think is not exactly respectful but this is just grim.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:06

It just shows you how the world is full of tasteless, sick individuals. Regardless of what they do for a living.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:07

And how tv executives go out looking for exactly this type of stuff to put on air.

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 19:08

This was on a mainstream presumably popular TV series.

Saying it's a few sick individuals won't wash.

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 19:10

You need to stop making excuses for this now tbh.

There seems to be a big push to make drag mainstream at the moment, no idea why.

Being disrespectful towards women is the whole joke. It's punching down.

When that's the point of it, all bets are off, surely.

Notimeforaname · 18/08/2020 19:13

I know some people who are friendly with some of the past drag race contestants as they do shows over here from time to time. And have told us many times about how the TV executives set up insane scenarios or told particular queens to change their names to somthing more shocking and change how they appear on camera or they wouldn't make the final cut. Hmm

I guess if you already have no morals or are lacking in the brain department /are desperate for money or attention you will do these things.

NiceGerbil · 18/08/2020 19:14

But I googled it and it's a 'thing'.

It's not just that show.
