Do I pay my hairdresser double?

My mum and I have been discussing our first post lockdown haircut. I won't get mine done for a while (shielding) but should we pay double first time back? If not, how much would/do you plan to tip?

For reference a cut costs roughly £20 for mum and £30 for me and this wouldn't break the bank for either of us but equally don't want to seem OTT.

YABU - double?! What you thinking?!
YANBU - of course you should pay double, they haven't been able to work for the last 3 months.

I wouldn't pay double but I would maybe double the tip if I could afford it. So 10 instead of 5 for example. Obviously if you're a tight arse and paid a 2 tip instead of one pound then no ones going to notice! But obviously you dont fall into that category! WinkSmile

AuntieMarys · 14/07/2020 09:37

I paid £157 last week for highlights, colour and cut. Included £3 PPE Gave £20 tip...normally £10. I go every 6 weeks for colour but only get it cut every 2nd visit.

You were wrong, you said there was no limit. It wasn't a tiny slip, you argued it twice. Just say "oh yeah sorry, got that one wrong" Confused[/quote]
This! You made it such a big deal by going on the defensive and then bringing up other details of the scheme when what people took issue with was the post where you stated as fact there is no limit attached to the scheme. There is. You were wrong. That's fine, it's not a massive deal to just be gracious and say yeah that was wrong...

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/07/2020 10:39

Absolutely. Instead the poster choose to have a go at those pointing it out. Telling me you should know as you claimed it. Well yes I do know there was a limit which was why I pointed out the error. I didn't remember exactly the maximum amounts as my claim was tiny.

DollyDoneMore · 14/07/2020 10:46

I always pay a tip. This weekend, I gladly paid a double tip.

Jellyeggs · 14/07/2020 10:50

Haven’t read the other comments just wanted to say I am in a different line of work and one of my customers is a hairdresser and paid me again for a job she had already paid for in February that I couldn’t complete until now. It was totally unexpected and a really lovely gesture. If you can afford to pay double maybe they’ll pay it forward.

MadameButterface · 14/07/2020 10:51

@almondfinger

Mine jacked their prices up to pass on the cost of kitting out the salon to their clients.

I paid 15 more then usual for a cut and blow dry. I was a bit gobsmacked. Actually, this thread has just reminded me that I forgot to tip! I was a bit stunned by the markup. I always tip, With the heat and the mask and the hairdryer, I couldn't get out of the salon fast enough.

Who do you think should cover the cost of the increased overheads? Either you’ve mistaken hair salons for charities or you’re confused about how capitalism works 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exactly. The "you should know" line made me cringe!

Also @JinglingHellsBells you've got me confused with another poster. I didn't post anything about exceptions, I only know one person who claimed and they got the grant.

Saying gross income instead of net income is a big mistake not a tiny one, saying there's no limit is wrong with no size attached, are you not seeing all the posters telling you that's what started this whole thing in your post around 8.30pm yesterday?

But one good thing, I've read the rules now and understand it better now

@Nicknacky

cologne All the hairdressers, beauticians and nail technicians I use have been self employed and have had no government help.

The propaganda wasn’t as great as it was made out to many.

That’s interesting as a few friends and family are self employed and they have received grants and loans.
Nicknacky · 14/07/2020 11:07

Ponddering I don’t proclaim to know the ins and outs of their business but certainly one hairdresser I know was telling me that she was skint and had never been as broke in her life.

And certainly, there was very little help for my H initially, apart from a loan which wasn’t the solution as he had to be careful that the business would be able to repay it. No rent/rates relief so that still had to be paid and not eligible for the grant.

It was (and still is) very worrying financial times for us.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 14/07/2020 12:01

Many many self employed folk I know have done very well out of furlough.

An acquaintance hairdresser who is self employed boasted of taking 250! first week of

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 14/07/2020 12:02

Week of being back to work....

He does much iof it in people's houses... And boasted if of the good furlough he had had...

MarshaBradyo · 14/07/2020 12:04

You mean the s/e grant? There is a cap to how much they will get which is related to earnings. What do you mean they done so well? It will fairly reflect previous years.

MarshaBradyo · 14/07/2020 12:05

Do you mean his demand has gone up due to other people’s furlough?

zingally · 14/07/2020 12:07

...? Why would you pay double? Makes no sense.

Just pay for what you've had, and if you really want to, throw a couple of extra quid on the tip.

RuthW · 14/07/2020 12:13

As an ex hairdresser it is absolutely no different taking half an inch off to three inches.

LaureBerthaud · 14/07/2020 12:19

My hairdresser would be embarrassed if I tried to pay her double - it would seem condescending. I don't tip for the same reason. Just pay a fair price for a good job.

ChainVaper · 14/07/2020 13:31

How is £250 a week a boast? That’s only £1000 per month Pre tax ? Really ?!!!! Or was that a typo?

Viviennemary · 14/07/2020 16:43

A tip of £20. Shock

SummerPoppies · 14/07/2020 17:25

I pay £18 for my haircut. I give her a £20 note and tell her to keep the change.

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 17:30

I paid normally when I saw mine last week for my first cut in months, but I had carried on paying her throughout lockdown. She's mobile and self-employed, plus very good and very nice, and I've known her for ages. I am lucky enough that covid hasn't (so far!) affected my work or income; I could afford to keep paying her, so I did.

If you can afford to pay double and you want to, then no it's not weird. I think it's a kind gesture and I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

I find it quite bizarre that you want to pay double the cost of a haircut. Did you have the same attitude when you went to the pub the first time when they re-opened?
I don't go to the pub but do have a favourite cafe at which I was a regular pre-virus. I'm not paying them double for coffees now, but I am going perhaps once more a week than I used to. I also donated to them during lockdown when they were cooking and delivering meals to hospitals for the staff.
I don't think it's 'bizarre' to want to support a business you like.

motherofawhirlwind · 14/07/2020 17:38

Mine's self employed and newly so. She hasn't put her prices up. I paid what she asked (£25) and popped £20 in her tip jar.

I also paid my cleaner through lockdown. She's off currently due to personal reasons and I'm not paying her at the moment as that felt different.

Celestine70 · 14/07/2020 18:02

I think you will find many are putting prices up.

Auckland11 · 14/07/2020 18:04

Its kind of you to think about paying double but they are not the only people who haven't been working for 4 month and they will all have had a pay out from the government so they haven't lost out!
