Do I pay my hairdresser double?

My mum and I have been discussing our first post lockdown haircut. I won't get mine done for a while (shielding) but should we pay double first time back? If not, how much would/do you plan to tip?

For reference a cut costs roughly £20 for mum and £30 for me and this wouldn't break the bank for either of us but equally don't want to seem OTT.

YABU - double?! What you thinking?!
YANBU - of course you should pay double, they haven't been able to work for the last 3 months.

they are not the only people who haven't been working for 4 month and they will all have had a pay out from the government so they haven't lost out!

Perhaps not, but should people not pay double/extra just because they want to?

DilloDaf · 14/07/2020 18:06

I've got a dental appointment next week. Defonitely won't be paying double, not leaving a tip either.

Oscarsdaddy · 14/07/2020 18:08

Why would you pay any more than normal?

OK your hairdresser may not have worked for several months but that’s not down to you.

Pay what they are asking for and your usual tip.

proudbrows · 14/07/2020 18:08

I paid my hairdresser £20 for the tip (Usually I tip the standard fiver for a 5 weekly £45 hair relaxing treatment). She’s worked wonders on my hair over the years, has been through all the ups and downs of my hair being adversely affected by my various food allergies and values my custom. When the salons were opened again last week, she made sure I was the first client she saw. The tip was well deserved (Although not expected) for that alone because she’s bloody ace!

Zoejj77 · 14/07/2020 18:10

Your hairdresser is cheap but I still wouldn’t give double.

FelicisNox · 14/07/2020 18:10

They have been shut but they've also been paid whilst on furlough so they're hardly destitute.

By all means give them a good tip but double? I don't see why you would do that unless you're after some serious brownie points.

Everyone has had a tough time in lockdown, will you be paying everyone else double?

tillyandmilly · 14/07/2020 18:15

Did I just hear right? £200 for a haircut! I thought mine was expensive at £30!

tillyandmilly · 14/07/2020 18:17

£130! For a haircut whoa!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 14/07/2020 18:23

I tip and when I have my first lockdown cut I'll give a slightly higher tip, but won't pay double. My hairdresser has been furloughed. Has she had no income for the duration, I might have paid double as I've been with her a long time and she has a young family. But I don't think they will expect people to pay more. I should imagine most places will put prices of goods/services up to recoup some of their losses.

suzy2b · 14/07/2020 18:24

Why when you pay for your hair do you tip I'm trying to find someone who will do my hair but i won't pay more that £20 I usually only pay £10 at the college but they are shut

lindyloo57 · 14/07/2020 18:28

I agree with jinglinghellsbells why should you pay more, read on here at sometime ago that some hairdressers are charging £5.00 pr client for a mask, I would take my own, it's all about making more money,

wooo69 · 14/07/2020 18:31

My hair cut used to be £7.99 but I always gave her £10 and said to keep the change. I went last week and it was £9.99, I did expect the prices to increase, I gave her £12 as felt I should carry on giving a tip.

Melm22 · 14/07/2020 18:37

They are self employed and some have been given Universal Credit as long as their income is less than £1600 per month (roughly) All self employed people have also been given a Government grant this was based on the last 3 tax returns that they submitted. Given that they completed their tax returns correctly they would have qualified for a reasonable grant payment. So paying double really needn't be necessary but a decent tip I am sure would be appreciated 👍

Marmunia1975 · 14/07/2020 18:38

@Nicknacky

The self employed didn’t get furlough.
Yes they did! About 80 per cent of businesses and self-employed have claimed back.
Workingmum34 · 14/07/2020 18:40

I have made a point of buying shampoo and conditioner off them. I don’t normally but figure that the extra money would be helpful for them.

rarotonga2 · 14/07/2020 18:41

I would wait and see what you are getting first. I need to wash my own hair and my hair won't be blow dried or finished so I feel the normal amount of £70 is fairly generous for a wet cut as it is. I will probably give my usual tip. I can't afford to pay double.

Please don't start this up again all self employed people have not been given a grant. Completing a tax return correctly isn't one of the criteria, in fact declaring all your profits could well mean you disqualify yourself.

Please read the many posts above where posters have given the correct information.

sunflower1990 · 14/07/2020 19:17

I paid my hairdresser the usual tip. I don't mind paying a little extra for PPE costs but their argument for a £60 price increase £140 to £200 was I hadn't had my highlights done in so long (March) and they needed extra colour etc. Somehow I can't see the price dropping in the future. Confused

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 19:26

If you're self-employed you don't and can't get furloughed. There is a self-employed grant from HMRC, but that's different.

arethereanyleftatall · 14/07/2020 19:30

3 tax returns (and bear in mind 19/20 didn't count; it was 16/17, 17/18 and 18/19) is quite a lot isn't it? It meant that anyone who has started a business in the last four years either got less or didn't qualify at all if they'd only been going 1 and a bit years). I wonder what the uproar would have been from the employed people if they had to be working for their company from April 2016 to qualify for furlough!

DaisyDreaming · 14/07/2020 19:47

If you can afford it then it’s very kind of you to give such a big tip after no income for so long

loubeylou68smellsofreindeerpoo · 14/07/2020 19:50

I'm not sure which part of the country all these minted hairdressers are. I own a salon and furloughed my staff (all employed) topped up their wages to 100% . None of us earn as much as quoted here. Out of the money we take there is rent, stock, insurance, utilities (water, electric, internet and phone. Music license) plus cleaning products, laundry costs, vat (1/6 of everything we take) and tax. Repairs and renewals of the salon, holiday and sickness pay. Education to keep up with trends.
The small Buisness grant, furlough pay and self employed grant (all taxable) meant that I didn't have to dip into the savings but I wouldn't have been able to cover another months expenses if we didn't go back to work.
That said I don't expect my clients to cover the costs of our time off and certainly don't expect them to pay double now we are back.
Tips are always very nice but not expected.

You don't need 3 years of returns, the Gov website clearly says that if you can't get it on your 18/19 tax return they will check back 3 years to see if those years qualify.

The webpage is written in very clear English I think, why are posters not getting it?

arethereanyleftatall · 14/07/2020 20:03

Ah, ok, my bad. But still, not the 'every self employed person gets it' eluded to up thread. So, basically you had to be turning a profit by April 2018 to qualify. Whereas fir employed workers you had to be on the payroll since feb 2020. No consistency.
