Do I pay my hairdresser double?

My mum and I have been discussing our first post lockdown haircut. I won't get mine done for a while (shielding) but should we pay double first time back? If not, how much would/do you plan to tip?

For reference a cut costs roughly £20 for mum and £30 for me and this wouldn't break the bank for either of us but equally don't want to seem OTT.

YABU - double?! What you thinking?!
YANBU - of course you should pay double, they haven't been able to work for the last 3 months.

It is my hairdresser's own business and she sets her own prices. She has increased her price slightly, to cover her PPE costs I expect. I paid her what she asked but I had taken her in a big bouquet of flowers as I arrived.

BlueBrian · 13/07/2020 23:20

Tip my hair dresser? No chance, she owns the saloon, and she rakes it in, lives in a big house with a big garden, and she's probably been getting government money anyway.

Belowwreck · 13/07/2020 23:22

@Livelovebehappy

Just had mine done, and price has increased by £10. Also she was telling me she had received the self employed grant. It’s difficult to just know whether a tip is warranted as we don’t know their financial circumstances, ie furloughed or grant.
Either way they're 20% down so not rolling in it.

I don't tip mine at all (never have done; it's expensive enough as it is) . Saw her last Friday, and she told me they were all on furlough pay until 4th July.

Charlieandlola · 13/07/2020 23:24

I’m going on Friday- I’ll pay what she asks and add £25 on top . My income hasn’t been impacted so I can afford a gesture

arethereanyleftatall · 13/07/2020 23:35

Some (most) people have lost financially with covid, some massively, some have stayed the same, and some have profited. We don't know who is who really unless you know their own particular financial situation. So, I'd say, if you've done ok out of this, and can afford to, then be nice. Chances are if they're in the same boat, they won't accept it.

As an aside, I'm astounded how many people on this thread didn't know that many self employed people fell through the cracks.

ToBBQorNotToBBQ · 13/07/2020 23:42

I used to be a hairdresser they defo are not minted. Much better off financially now. I only tipped £2 though when I went 😂 a tip is a tip.

Candyflosscookie · 13/07/2020 23:52

*Over the £50k cap. = £0

Gross income, but very few people earn more than this.*

I read the HMRC website as saying £50k PROFITS not gross income? Big difference.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 13/07/2020 23:58

Where I go is an independent salon and I get a beautiful haircut that lasts me months.

At the moment I can afford it, so I'm happy to pay.

Do I pay my hairdresser double?
Justkeeepsmiling · 14/07/2020 00:20

If self employed they can also claim for any loss of profit through their insurance.
I know simo self employed people were claiming either through their insurance or the government grant and still working in their regular role that they were making a claim on. so, technically, earning twice. I am by no means saying all self employed people were doing this though.

almondfinger · 14/07/2020 00:36

Mine jacked their prices up to pass on the cost of kitting out the salon to their clients.

I paid 15 more then usual for a cut and blow dry. I was a bit gobsmacked. Actually, this thread has just reminded me that I forgot to tip! I was a bit stunned by the markup. I always tip, With the heat and the mask and the hairdryer, I couldn't get out of the salon fast enough.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/07/2020 01:01

@Justkeeepsmiling I doubt many insurance companies would pay out and if you claim grant and tou business isn't affected the IR can prosecute you.

MayDayFightsBack · 14/07/2020 04:58

I’m glad I‘ve always tipped (a reasonable not massive amount) ‘cause it meant when the salons opened again I was first in the queue for an appointment. It also means that my hairdressers will always shuffle appointments around to fit me in. As well as tipping I treat them at Christmas and significant birthdays too. I’ve gone to the same salon for decades though and I paid £45 for a root touch up, some lowlights and a haircut this week. I never have my hair blow dried either unless I’m going somewhere. I prefer to have my roots done more regularly so my stylist doesn’t insist I have a blow dry every time I get my roots done. This saves me a fortune - which is one of the reasons I always tip. What comes around goes around. Wink

022828MAN · 14/07/2020 05:02

What?! No! Will you be paying double in any restaurants, shops, bars etc?
You pay for the service you receive, surely.

ChainVaper · 14/07/2020 06:09

As a self employed hairdresser I received 3 months average salary from the self employed scheme. Insurance won’t cover any extra I have had to lay out for PPE etc or the
extra time it now takes between clients due to having to clean everything on the go, therefore reducing my number of clients in a day. I am certainly NOT raking in money at the moment nor earning double through insurance claims. Am I putting my prices up ?- yes but not anything more than I would have annually anyway. Do I expect anyone to pay double - NO certainty not. Do I expect tips ?-NO but I will always accept them with gratitude.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 14/07/2020 06:14

But surely they been on furlough and the salon owner has been in receipt of the relevant grants and possibly an insurance payout?

JinglingHellsBells · 14/07/2020 07:23

@lifesalongsong You seem determined to make a song and dance about one tiny slip up of mine at 10.30pm when posting. (The gross or net income.)

The fact you know no one who could claim the grant - and then posted all the exceptions to show why they didn't- is unbelievable.

Of course you can't claim if you don't earn enough to pay tax or submit a tax return.

Or if your earnings are not accounted for over 3 years of tax returns.

(ie a new sole trader or earning under £1K a year.)

Anyone earning under £1k a year is barely working anyway.

There are loads of people who have benefited from this grant.
We are 'normal' self employed people with a long history of working this way, who submit a tax return and who have lost business through lockdown.

Why you bothered to post exceptions to try to prove something makes no sense.

JinglingHellsBells · 14/07/2020 07:24

But surely they been on furlough and the salon owner has been in receipt of the relevant grants and possibly an insurance payout?

Exactly, the 80% salary is paid by the government, it doesn't come out of the salon owners' pocket, which is why we are in huge debt now.

Coquohvan · 14/07/2020 08:19

Insurance for my daughters gym didn’t pay out for Lose of Earnings or Business Interruption at all. Citing COVID-19 was not specifically mentioned in the Policy.
So I think there would have been very few Policies have paid out.
IMO

user1487194234 · 14/07/2020 08:27

I earned net pre tax just over 50k for relevant period and got sweet FA
That’s life

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/07/2020 08:43

@JinglingHellsBells are you ready to acknowledgement that you were wrong to tell me that I shoukd know the rules when I pointed out you were wrong abou there being no limit? I llike everyone else who told you that you were wrong were not questioning your figured just your wrong assumtion that there was no limit.
As you claimed the grant you should have known that really! See what I did!

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/07/2020 08:52

I think the self employed will be paying fir tbis bailout in years to come.

Do I pay my hairdresser double?
Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/07/2020 08:52

For and this

MrsKoala · 14/07/2020 09:02

I do not understand how some people can spend so much on their hair! My hairdresser informs me that mine is in tip top condition, gloriously thick, and others have said they would give their right arm for it

But surely your hair would still be in that condition even if you stuck a bowl on your head and cut round it? I also have naturally ‘good’ hair. But I go to the hairdressers to cut, colour and style it. Not improve the condition. That would be the same regardless. I choose to have a complicated colour which takes a long time. Because I like it, my hair would still look nice if I didn’t. I just prefer it like this, and I also get many comments about it and have referred loads of people to my hairdresser because of the colour I have.

Belowwreck · 14/07/2020 09:20

@JinglingHellsBells

You were wrong, you said there was no limit. It wasn't a tiny slip, you argued it twice. Just say "oh yeah sorry, got that one wrong" Confused
