To think my bladder should empty first time?

I'm 44 and not peri menopausal - normal
Blood and no symptoms

So every night I go to the toilet before bed and have a pee - i wait until I'm empty and then wiggle around so that I squeeze every last drop out

So why the fuck do I need to go back 5 minutes later when I am nice and cosy in my bed

It's annoying me a lot

I don't have my symptoms of a urinary infection

I'm now officially and old lady aren't I???

I'm reading this in bed, now I need a wee.

@AltheaVestr1t did you have gestational diabetes?
Have you had your sugars checked recently?

:-) :-) :-)

Seriously, I've tried the technique a few times since first reading about it on here and it hasn't made any difference. I am weeing normally though so no worries.

@gotothecooler that’s good, well not good, but you know what I mean. The beauty of mumsnet! As I talk to friends about some of these issues but it’s good to have a space where women talk about the reality of what can happen after kids.

@AltheaVestr1t, I think what you describe and needing to pee is fairly normal in the bracket of those of us with these issues, but it can definitely be improved. My gynea physio was amazing and told me that exactly what they hope for is women coming soon after their babies with these relatively minor issues, as they are much more treatable, it’s harder when women are looking to improve issues 20 years down the line (although I’m sure not impossible if anyone is in that bracket!)

She also helped me have a healthy appreciation of what my body has done (last baby was 10lb5) and not to expect everything to be exactly the same as it was pre kids.

Anyway long answer to - I need to pee in the night if I drink in the hour before bed, I really try to avoid, and no matter when I stop drinking I have the whole pee rigmarole unemptied feeling you describe. This is worse for me lately and I think I have stressed my pelvic floor too much by taking up running so I have taken a break and doing more Pilates instead.

Eat something like watermelon after your evening meal, I usually eat one of those ready cut up packs from the supermarket, by the time you go to bed, you are well hydrated, have a massive wee, stand up/jiggle around & go again.

I follow gusset grippers on Twitter Elaine is a Scottish physio who does comedy shows at the edinburgh festival about pelvic floor etc she’s very funny and informative. And it works, need to carry on as I’ve been lazy but stopped needing at night and control is much better. Also sit forward on toilet or stand up and back down often helps empty your bladder properly. My son sees a urologist and continence nurse so learned a lot from them too.

Elisheva · 12/07/2020 12:02

The gynaecologist told me that as you get older and post-babies your internal organs all start jostling for space. Your uterus, bladder, bowel etc. all fall into the vaginal vault and can get in each other’s way. So you can’t pee properly because something is getting in the way.
When you lie down in bed everything falls back into place, so you feel the need to pee again because nothing is obstructing the bladder.

FourEyesGood · 12/07/2020 12:34

I have the same issue, OP. A couple of years ago I noticed that it isn’t to do with time of day; it’s to do with lying down. If i lie down, I need to pee again within a few minutes. I now assume that it’s because the pee moves into a different tube or something when I lie down. Note: this is not based on any scientific research. Grin
