To think appletiser is the height of sophistication

I’m from a teetotal family, and as an adult don’t drink very much or very often these days (liver issues, migraines and the dread of having to look after a 4 year old with a hangover have put me off)

As a kid we had appletiser on special occasions, and even now, if I go to a restaurant and it’s on the menu, I’ll order it.

Please tell me I’m not alone in thinking appletiser is the height of sophistication

Was the Pierdmont water in funny grey bottles? Hard to get the lid off?

I like the San Pellegrino blood orange light, also both lemon and orange, , elderflower as well as appletise.

PeterPomegranate · 10/07/2020 21:59

I drink alcohol but I do enjoy an appletise. I spent some time in Germany and they have apfelschorle which is really nice.

I’ve got no time for J20. Too syrupy.

Husband grew up in Northern Ireland and his grandmother was very religious. His parents used to buy Schloer at Christmas so they could pretend they were drinking that rather than wine.

TokyoSushi · 10/07/2020 22:01

I used to 100% agree with you, but recently I discovered Fevertree sicilian lemonade - amazing!!

Wecandothis99 · 10/07/2020 22:02

It also taste SO good

SpeedofaSloth · 10/07/2020 22:02

Agree, as long as it's in a wine glass. I put it on the table for the kids at Christmas.

OutOfHours · 10/07/2020 22:08

How is appetiser sophisticated?

Its just fizzy apple juice

OutOfHours · 10/07/2020 22:09

That sounds more like it

I was wondering why so many people were calling it appletiser, when it was called Appletise, so I googled and it is appletiser. I thought it was the Mandela effect, but was relieved to see it was called Appletise in the UK until 2001. I don't think I have actually drunk it since about 1987. I had schloer recently which was the sweetest and most disgusting thing known to man, I used to love that!

UnaOfStormhold · 10/07/2020 22:29

Elderflower cordial goes beautifully with tonic. Appletise(r) fans would probably appreciate the non-alcoholic mojitos I make with apple juice, lemonade, lime juice, lime cordial and lots of mint.

"relieved to see it was called Appletise in the UK until 2001."

So glad I came back to this thread. It's also the first time I've seen the 'r' Blush

Years ago when I was a young girl of about 7/8 My mum was stopped in the shopping centre and asked if I’d help in some market research for a new drink....
It was appletise. I’d like to think it was my stamp of approval that gives you your sophisticated drink of choice Wink

7ofNine · 10/07/2020 22:58

No!! It's a cheap nasty sugary drink found everywhere!! @whattodo2019 it is made with only apple juice, no sugar added, or sweeteners.
Apple juice is sweet, but it's not nasty.

Shloer however is vile nowadays, presumably due to sweeteners... though I just checked tthe ingredients and they seem to have switched to Stevia so maybe it tastes better? Haven't bought it for about ten years.

OscarWildesCat · 10/07/2020 22:58

I’m not a fan, it’s very sweet 😐

TheChiefJo · 10/07/2020 22:59

I always thought it was a huge treat if we ate somewhere that I could order Appletise. I passed this on to my sons, too. They are 17 and 19 and still see it as a treat.

avocadoze · 10/07/2020 23:00

Ooh. I love a bottle of appetiser. I used to drink it when I was pregnant and I still have it every now and then as a treat.Wine

7ofNine · 10/07/2020 23:00

I love plain sparkling water though, preferably badoit.

mrsbyers · 10/07/2020 23:00

They were all ruined with the introduction of sweetners

mrsbyers · 10/07/2020 23:02

Woah Appletiser has no sweetners - that’s going on the shopping list ‘

sangrias · 10/07/2020 23:07

As a child, my mum and I would get a train 3 hours down to london to see relatives. Once or twice we sat in First Class and they served me a very cold Orangina in a glass bottle.
Now that's sophistication for me and always will be 😂

Lockdownlooks · 10/07/2020 23:10

@StCharlotte

I went to a Bahrain Embassy Christmas Party at the Dorchester (no Ferrero Rocher but there was an ice sculpture).

Bahrain is ostensibly dry but I know you can get a drink there so I was mildly suprised (and more than mildly disappointed!) that there was no alcohol and then they brought some champagne round. Hurrah! Nope: Appletiser.

We didn't stay long and ended up having a session in the Bag O'Nails in our black tie finery.

I don’t think I’ve ever tried appletize. I like Schloer or J2O mango.

Drinking alcohol can be fun and sociable for a lot of people. I suppose if this is your only Christmas do you might want a bit of booze, but if you will be drinking/partying with family/friends over Christmas then do you have to drink to enjoy the night. (Or was the company bad as well?)
