To think appletiser is the height of sophistication

I’m from a teetotal family, and as an adult don’t drink very much or very often these days (liver issues, migraines and the dread of having to look after a 4 year old with a hangover have put me off)

As a kid we had appletiser on special occasions, and even now, if I go to a restaurant and it’s on the menu, I’ll order it.

Please tell me I’m not alone in thinking appletiser is the height of sophistication

I used to think it was very sophisticated but it has become a lot more mainstream lately. We usually have it in the house in cans. It definitely doesn’t taste as nice as it used to - far too sugary now and gives me a headache. It’s not very refreshing anymore.

Shoppingwithmother · 10/07/2020 20:34

I agree 100%. I also still call it Appletise- I don’t know when they added the ‘r’

My daughter loves to have it when we go out. Unfortunately we went out yesterday and she asked if they had it, they said yes, but when it came it wasn’t Appletise, it was Bottlegreen. Which is nowhere near as nice (probably because it has far less sugar) - it just tastes like fizzy water with a slight apple taste- she was genuinely gutted as it’s her first drink out of the house since March!

hopingtobedally · 10/07/2020 20:39

I used to love it as a kid
There was also a similar version called Kiri I used to have in the pub as a child
Another one which was far more sophisticated was called Piermont- spring water with a little bit of apple juice but nobody else ever remembers this

SecretNutellaFix · 10/07/2020 20:40

Why do you call it a cheap nasty sugary drink? It's carbonated apple juice!

I'm also v v sensitive to sweeteners so my soft drink options when out are very limited.

Abraid2 · 10/07/2020 20:41

Too sweet to drink with a good meal.

Chasingsquirrels · 10/07/2020 20:43

I like Appletiser, but was thinking I'd prefer Orange Britvix 55, then read Warpdrive's post.
Orangina was only nice in France, didn't taste anywhere near as nice back home - even if it was French Orangina we'd brought back with us!
Apple & Raspberry J2O is my usual choice when out nowadays.

Now come on we are on Mumsnet
Children now only drink water thrice filtered through lake Windermere

Yes! I love this stuff. Never had appletiser must try some, it sounds nice.
InFiveMins · 10/07/2020 20:45

Appletiser is very posh OP. If someone serves that rather than the usual coke and sprite, I'm impressed.

Runnerduck34 · 10/07/2020 20:46

YADNBU!

Musereader · 10/07/2020 20:49

Yabu shloer beats it hands down.

MillicentMartha · 10/07/2020 20:51

So, is Appletiser the bastard child of Appletise and Tizer?

MillicentMartha · 10/07/2020 20:53

Just googled. It was Appletise in the UK due to complaints from Tizer.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 10/07/2020 20:54

Had one yesterday. It was delicious. I'm also partial to a peartiser.

Runbitchrun · 10/07/2020 20:55

It’s always been part of my Christmas shop, one of the things I only ever buy at that time of year.

holymosquito · 10/07/2020 20:58

Appletiser is nice but the German Apfelschorle is much more sophisticated. Its just half apple juice and half sparkling water. Much less sweet and far more refreshing.

Apparently the less sweet a drink is the more sophisticated it is. So how about a Grapefruit sprizer. Grapefruit juice and sparkling water. Fancy!

While we are on the subject of the best non alchoholic drinks. The Hairy bikers did a nice recipe for Shampagne. Its elderflower and lime cordial, a few drops of orange flower water and fizzy water. Sublime... and very sophisticated!

mumwon · 10/07/2020 21:00

or bitter lemon
or traditional ginger beer
rose shloer

mumwon · 10/07/2020 21:02

or mango lassi

RoLaren · 10/07/2020 21:04

Seconding the Vienetta - my husband (grew up Northern working class) always says 'ooh, fancy' when I get one in Smile

zaffa · 10/07/2020 21:05

So posh in our house too - and I always order it if I find it on a menu. In my home country we also have grapetiser - red and white! YANBU

BalloonSlayer · 10/07/2020 21:17

My friends and I used to frequent a pub in the late 80s which had just been "done up" and turned into a Harvester. Grin

Harvesters were a new thing then and we loved the style/decor. It was so nice to go to a pub that wasn't full of old men drinking mild and smoking fags. It had armchairs! And bookshelves!! None of us drank alcohol (back then), so we used to have appletise. Then we branched out into the floater coffees. Now those were bloody lovely.

sophiestew · 10/07/2020 21:18

YABU - Tesco pink lemonade is the boss!!

GameSetMatch · 10/07/2020 21:34

What about Shloer you can even have it in a wine glass

IamEarthymama · 10/07/2020 21:37

I love Robinson’s Peppermint and Lime cordial
Great ideas for Mocktails here

But my favourite soft drink is CranApple!
We travelled to San Francisco from the UK on United airline
The cabin crew were amazing and kept offering us Craan-Apple in their lovely accents
It’s one of our things, we always buy a can if we see it

Enjoy your Appletiser everyone 🍎🍏🍹🍏🍎

I was just about to mention Kiri. My mum drank it so much in the 80s we called the new dog Kiri after the drink.
